  • The Boom-Operator - also the lavelier-dude on that production - always puts the lav between my shirt and a button of my shirt, that works really well. You guys should give it a try.

  • If you use uni-directional microphones (e.g. cardioid or super-cardioid), hiding them in a pen will make them omnidirectional.

Not necessarily a problem, but you have to consider it.

Also, the frequency response will change!

  • One problem I see with the pen method is that cable has to go somewhere, most often connected to a wireless pac or mixer. I question if a Letro or Sennheiser pack would fit in the front shirt pocket without bulging.

  • you are a genius! thanks

  • I don't know what the people who disliked this video are thinking about. Great concept with the pen. I love it!

  • On a real video shoot the pen idea wouldn't be accepted. For one thing wardrobe won't let you punch holes in clothes for wires. The other problem: the director won't allow pens in a pocket, it looks crappy. Learn how to hide mics in the clothes. It works when you learn how. Honest. Use gooey wig tape to put it in. Also, clothing won't rub against the mic if the mic is taped to the shirt. Also, cotton has almost no frequency degradation. All true. These are facts. The proper mic is also needed.

  • Why is everyone liking the pen idea? Why would you want to see a pen in someone's pocket in a video? Unless it's some casual thing, or if the camera operator is walking around with the talent. But the pen would be out of place in a formal interview. Also, the pen idea wouldn't apply to women. Everything else was pretty helpful, though. Thx.

  • I put a small piece of fake fur over the mic to act as a dead cat. This makes it sound a lot less harsh.

  • Where can i get one of those nice microphones. ? =)

  • Great info, thanks.

  • the pen methode makes it very hard to even the us marine to track down the microphone, unless they really really want to allway's spending hours to track sespecting things.

you better watch out for those terrorists o,o.

  • Yeah, you gotta put a hole in the shirt it would appear.

  • mmm..pen idea interesting but how would you get the cable back to the transmitter?!

Cut a hole in the talent's shirt?

  • I agree loving the pen idea!

  • as for a Tornado use a Senheiser ME66 in a zepp with fur cover;see

( Riendheart ). Storm chasers use this type of kit and those who get too close ,well Tuff they Die.

as for the Jet fly by..you use 2 channels on your recorder and set one 12-18 dB down on the other so if it clips you have an uncliped recording to revert to as done by any sound recordist at an air show.but these are basic recording techniques..

  • very informative!

  • great video

  • This is a great video, but I have to say, I'm suprised at how distorted the audio is. Same with the "Boom Mics" video. I'm sure you captured the audio well, but I think the editor of the video had the levels clipping. I'm a videographer/editoe/audio engineer, and I'm probably more sensitive to mistakes, but this is pretty bad. I'm not trying to be a dick. I just had to say something in case nobody has noticed. Of any video, this should have stellar audio. Yes I watched at 720p.

  • the sound quality of this video is nothing to make example of.

  • Great video. I always wondered how a lav mic is hidden.

  • this is an excellent video thank you so much!!

  • the pen trick was nice...

  • Looping & taping the cable to itself never worked for me...

  • And that whole piece was done with a boom....

  • the pen idea is ok but

1..what about the other end of the cable?

    2..wind noise in the outdoors.

3..what happens in a radio noisy area such as an Amature Radio field meet, not only do you have Natural problems but now man made RFI.

  • @outithewoods 4. What happens if a tornado comes by? 5. What if a fighter jet flys by while brealing the sound barrier?

  • I am bold, I only wear white Tshirts (no double layer style) and I have no money. What option do I have in lavalier land?

  • hes whereing a wire!!!

  • hi there ... first of all thanx 4 sharing the valuable knowledge..

please make a tut for how this lav mike works...

  • is moleskin what i think it is or is it just the name of the product?

  • good review. why don't you want a taut cable? won't bending the wire into a circle to reduce strain damage the cable?

  • Hey, nice work there, hope the feds can learn something about wearing a 'wire' ha ha!

We've been producing corporate videos for a decade now and I find your concealing techniques refreshing.

I like the med tape idea. Gaffer taping a talent can be traumatic when removing the tape later.

We'll try the moleskin for our next project.

The pen idea gives me doubt if it will work. How does the cable form the mic (that's in the pen) get to the transmitter? Puncture a hole in the shirt?

  • I was also wondering how the cable will be able to hook up to the transmitter from the pocket?

  • What do you do with the mic cable at the other end of the pen? Do you have to cut a hole in the inside of the shirt? You only gave us half the story there.

  • Yeah I was wondering the same thing. Also, you never mention that you have to secure all sides of the mic to the clothing, and secure surrounding clothing. Just because you can hide a mic with some moleskin doesn't mean it's always quiet.

  • Great Job.....

  • Man the coolest ideas ever! man! thanks a lot. the hair and the pen is the classic ones! 1000 thumbs up

  • The pen method is absolute genius! I'm bookmarking this video :D

  • can u tell me what model mic r u using here inyour speeches. Thanks Prem.

  • awesome pen idea. btw.

  • ill have a DIY how to video on real drawn animation with no computer effects tutorial out within the next 2 weeks.

  • i agree with the pen thing. it's so creative, you wouldn't suspect the pen unless you knew the trick. and the hair thing too. you would probably look funny when people see it, but hey it works right. good tips guys.

  • those were probably the most creative tricks that i've ever seen...ecspecially the pen.

  • WOW! I feel so stupid after watching this!!!

  • Truly excellent tips, thank you!!!

  • "Plain site"... ;-)

    Good tip on the pen.
