Question; how can you tell if the bolt carrier is hitting the rear trunnion without a high-speed camera?
In this video, it is hard to tell, but it doesn't seem like the bolt carrier is actually making metal-metal contact with the rear. (Although it gets close). So what is the logic behind a recoil buffer that would create metal-to-rubber contact? Especially if there is no metal-metal contact beforehand? I would appreciate any replies
That dust cover really deflects brass mine with it on throws it at about the 1'o'clock position. Really you would choose a rock over an ak. Lol I like my AR better but would gladly fight with my ak if I had to.

Guns are cool... for target practice, and the rare bit of self defense (which really is only a problem if you live in a rural area with dangerous animals, or a ghetto with dangerous people, but the smart people get the fuck out of those places).

@nocandy4u2 Despite what alot of people believe, the accuracy actually isnt 'crap'. Its more than accurate enough for most urban engagements. Because it is often used by non-conventional forces that arnt trained in marksmanship and generally cant shoot for shit. A myth has arisen that the AK has terrible accuracy. AR type rifles and other small calibre assault rifles are generally more accurate than the AK, but if you know what your doing, you can still hit people at a fair distance.

I think this is the weakness of some AKs. For example Yugoslav version has a single mold frame. (basically you cant disassemble it like shown above) in my opinion this reduces the recoil and improves the accuracy of the weapon.

@HaMmytheha I agree that the AK is a better weapon system. But saying that the M16 jams every other shot is bull crap. When properly maintained the M16 is a very reliable rifle. The latest version, the M16A4 is alot more reliable than all the previous models, most of the malfunction issues are due to bad magazines or double feeds, which are malfunctions caused by the operator. With correct maintenance and training, the M16 is an effective weapon. But AK's will always be more reliable no matter.

Though I will add the original M16 was marred with the unreliable label because it was orginally designed for cartridges using 1 type of powder, and the ammo company changed the powder, and didn't tell anyone. It was crappier powder. And no cleaning kits were issued, as the M16 was called "self-cleaning". Its also cut alot tighter than an AK, which means better accuracy. The M16 and the AK are both great weapons, but I would agree the AK is a little better.
@Pantallicadeth I think the AK74M Vs M16A4 is a fairer comparison. People generally dont realise that the M16 is much improved since Vietnam. The AK74M is personally my favourite assault rifle, it has been as long as i can remember. Ever since i learned to field strip them, ive appreciated their simplicity, it just amazes me how simple yet effective they are.
@TaZ101SAGA Agreed, by the 80's, most of the M16's bugs were ironed out. It was just the originals weren't to handy because of a few extenuating factors, none of which were really the weapon designs fault. Now they're pretty squared away. The AK is about perfect for the kind of fighting going on today.
@Pantallicadeth However, the M16/M4 does still retain one fault, which will hopefully also be fixed over time. . Of course with a piston system, like the AK, the exhaust gases do not enter the receiver, as you probably know. The M16 however was designed in a way that dirty gases will eventually cause alot of fouling and carbon build up on the bolt, after excessive firing, which can lead to malfunctions, like failure to lock. If regular cleaning is performed, the M4/M16 is very reliable.
@Pantallicadeth Yep, the company switched to ball powder, which fouls terribly, when the barrels were chrome plated and the weapons cleaned regularly they were almost 100% malfunction free.

@nocandy4u2 Despite what alot of people believe, the accuracy actually isnt 'crap'. Its more than accurate enough for most urban engagements. Because it is often used by non-conventional forces that arnt trained in marksmanship and generally cant shoot for shit. A myth has arisen that the AK has terrible accuracy. AR type rifles and other small calibre assault rifles are generally more accurate than the AK, but if you know what your doing, you can still hit people at a fair distance.

I think this is the weakness of some AKs. For example Yugoslav version has a single mold frame. (basically you cant disassemble it like shown above) in my opinion this reduces the recoil and improves the accuracy of the weapon.

@HaMmytheha I agree that the AK is a better weapon system. But saying that the M16 jams every other shot is bull crap. When properly maintained the M16 is a very reliable rifle. The latest version, the M16A4 is alot more reliable than all the previous models, most of the malfunction issues are due to bad magazines or double feeds, which are malfunctions caused by the operator. With correct maintenance and training, the M16 is an effective weapon. But AK's will always be more reliable no matter.

Though I will add the original M16 was marred with the unreliable label because it was orginally designed for cartridges using 1 type of powder, and the ammo company changed the powder, and didn't tell anyone. It was crappier powder. And no cleaning kits were issued, as the M16 was called "self-cleaning". Its also cut alot tighter than an AK, which means better accuracy. The M16 and the AK are both great weapons, but I would agree the AK is a little better.

@Pantallicadeth I think the AK74M Vs M16A4 is a fairer comparison. People generally dont realise that the M16 is much improved since Vietnam. The AK74M is personally my favourite assault rifle, it has been as long as i can remember. Ever since i learned to field strip them, ive appreciated their simplicity, it just amazes me how simple yet effective they are.

It was just the originals weren't to handy because of a few extenuating factors, none of which were really the weapon designs fault. Now they're pretty squared away. The AK is about perfect for the kind of fighting going on today.

@Pantallicadeth However, the M16/M4 does still retain one fault, which will hopefully also be fixed over time. . Of course with a piston system, like the AK, the exhaust gases do not enter the receiver, as you probably know. The M16 however was designed in a way that dirty gases will eventually cause alot of fouling and carbon build up on the bolt, after excessive firing, which can lead to malfunctions, like failure to lock. If regular cleaning is performed, the M4/M16 is very reliable.
