  • Even today I never notice Rick Jones' arms.

  • I remmber Fingermouse from when I was a kid. I remember the one where he makes the little sand castles with dixie cups, and then says "now we'll pick them up carefuly" and then says "hey, I didn't tell you to smash them!"

  • Man, this made me cry. I'm 5 or 6 years old again ... :)

  • i'm actually quite freaked out by this :S

  • So simple, yet this had me glued to the telly when I was little, I loved it.

Looks so basic now, but that's part of it's charm I guess.

I'm sure one character is missing, did Scampi not have some friends? I can remember Yoffy's spare hand having 4 other scampi's on it and scampi on his other hand and they were intorduced as Scampi's friends.

  • sounds like someone was putting a shed up in the background! lol

  • that is clearly a hand.

  • "and a tortoise head peeps out.." hehe! sorry, I do actually like the show.

  • THANKS PULSAR - GREAT TO BE APPRECIATED!

  • how Kids TV can generate such bad language,on the comments is beyond me. Sad gits.

  • Ha ha; why do people search for this and then spout off. Oh Darren, you poor neglected and probably abused child. Go see a shrink

  • i used to love watching this as a toddler, now i`m off to find the clangers lol

  • I'm pretty sure that that's the same Rick Jones who also sang the theme song to the long forgotten by many early 70s TV show The Aeronauts.

  • absolute class,thanks for posting!!

  • God, I haven't laid eyes on that bearded weirdo for over 30 years.

  • I haven't read the comments for this video, but I'm delighted to know that children in Italy and Finland (and hopefully many more) were enjoying this marvellous programme around the same time that I was. I knew they were puppets, but I had no doubt that they were alive, if you know what I mean. Can I also mention the brilliant names - Enoch for a woodpecker? Genius!

And just to carry on with the theme, I'm 40 and I still know all the words too.

  • It was on tv in Italy too : I remember very well the opening tune ( the italian version ).

  • Come on - if you HAD to pick a favourite it would HAVE to be Scampi SURELY.

  • my favourite childrens programme

  • Who was the bloke with the beard, is he still with us ? I know Brian Cant did a lot of voice overs too.

  • @depoty I think he lives in San Francisco and was alive last year when I did the Wikipedia thing.

  • @planetrockford

aah, glad to hear he "yoffy" is still alive and well. Fingerbobs is one of my childhood memories, lol, I always used to watch it...my don't time fly...dont time fly indeed it does.................

  • My, my, Yoffy didn't seem to have to do much, how undemanding it seems now, and yet....as a child I sat enthralled by this every time it came on. It moves me to see it again.

  • Here in Finland, these sympathetic creatures were presented by the section for Swedish-language children's programmes on the national broadcaster YLE. After 35 years, the theme song still rings very clearly in my head:

Yoffy lyfter fingret - Vips är musen där

För händerna tillsammans - och en mås ger sej iväg

Yoffy lyfter fingret - räkan Scampi dyker ner

Yoffy lyfter ett till - och sköldpaddan tittar fram

    Hans händer ger oss sagor

    En saga får vi nu

  • Does anyone remember the END CREDITS? No music, just a shot of a river and you could hear a bird calling out it's song? 1972, I think.

  • FINGER MOUSE FINGER MOUSE

  • I don't remember Scampi, oddly enough!

  • I never understood Scampi!..just smiled though!

  • I love it when the tortoise yawned.

  • I'm nearly 43 and I was singing along to all the songs, I know every word! How sad is that?!

  • "bends another and a tortoise head pops out" Ha!

  • Remeber ragtime

  • I'm going to make me some Fingerbobs

  • l us to watch this as a kid then and at a age of 46 l still like it its a shame

  • @MorrisManDanceMan

    me too

  • oh jesus. i watched this 35 years ago . and had a nap b4 it finished. will let my two year old grand daughter check this out . it has skiped two generations . just love yoffie

  • 0:39 Fingermouse. The ultimate, yet dangerous alternative to a cotton bud. lol... I didn't realise 'Caterpillar' made workwear sweaters in those days. :D Classic.

  • Another programme I always watched - Don't make em like this anymore!!

40 next year and remembered all the characters.

  • ah, memories

  • ah, memories...

  • I was not allowed to watch it as i was brought up in a very anti-semetic environment. But I loved it! The ironic thing is that Yoffi was not even Jewish. I am not anti semetic BTW

  • is yoffy still alive...?

  • @ccrada According to Wikipedia, "Yoffy" (Rick Jones) is living in San Fransisco.

  • I'm afraid I am 45 and know all the words... ahem, sorry

  • @jayeevee I'm 42 and it's just the same for me!

  • @TheLusitanian I'm 42 and I remember ALL of these programmes. Sometimes I find it hard to listen to all of Camberwick Green...

  • @Noodles37UK Understood!

  • @jayeevee me too. great eh?

  • @jayeevee You should be ashamed of yourself lol. The seagull reminds me of Noel Coward.

  • @jayeevee likewise!!

  • Yoffi needs the toilet

    a tortoise head peaks out

But the seagull has filled the toilet up with pebbles.

  • @cullyvan lol

  • Yoffi drops his trousers

    And his arse is bare

    Yoffi bends right over

And a tortoise head - peaks out

  • Rick Jones has a very good singing voice. I always thought he looked a bit like an Arab, just as his fellow Play School presenter Fred Harris looked Italian.

  • Watching this a good few years on it looks cheap and a bit crap, but at the time when you are about 10 years old it was magical. I got drawn into my childhood just watching it. This is when we only had 3 channells on TV, it was the simpsons of the day.

  • 70's tv was the best ever..

  • scampi? What crap were we watching as children?

  • Hear hear, scampo is the singular.

  • Let's resolve this now. This programme was excellent. Just relax in the knowledge that you are incorrect.

  • Nicely put! I think we were lucky of a generation that we had such fab individual, eccentric and entertaining programmes. x

  • I bet you are young.

  • well at least it is not full of violence like most of the kids programmes today!

    It was just innocent!

  • My goodness - how wonderful !!! Haven't seen these for many years - I can't remember this chaps name - his daughter was a flatmate of a good friend of mine in London - I just love this brings back so many memories - but those I won't mention.

  • His name is Ian Lauchlan. His sister was my Primary 1 teacher :-D I went for dinner with her a few years back & was told he also made The Tweenies etc.

  • That scampi song is hilarious

  • Where's Errol the woodpecker??

  • Enoch the woodpecker I think - did he have his own song or was he just a bit player?

  • Thanks for this, brought back a lot of memories!

  • i remember this thanks for posting

  • the man looks like mr fairbrother.

  • Yoffy was a frontman for the first wave of Russian mafia infiltration, being a third column in BBC media.

  • i dont know why the hell i was completely fascinated by this as a 2 year old

  • No way, yoffy bends another and a tortiose head peeps out!

  • :-)

  • I bet they had live shows for children in times past like this-something that's probably become a lost art with TV and the Net-like the interactive teddy. My kids are going to watch this instead and I'll even make some glove puppets myself; perhaps play the guitar as accompaniment, together as a family in front of the fire. Now that's family time!

  • I think it's becoming clear you can't substitute talent for special effects. When you entertain or educate children you have to understand a child's mind and how critical it is. We all loved this programme because he had something. So expressive with those creatures, he bought them alive.

  • I think I speak for a generation when I say this is pure magic

  • Good old Rick!

  • I just showed my daughter this, she loves it, which just goes to show that even today, kids don't need special effects or animation...Imagination is still alive and kicking...Thanks for sharing and posting.

  • Wow, you just posted this a few days ago? I watched it as a kid too, and I wanted to share it with my own kids. Thanks :)

  • i loved this as a kid x
