  • mabe mount them on your wall about a foot away from the roof?

  • who is going to complain about them being on your roof really?

  • try mirrors to reflect or transfer sun light, may be some loss due to not direct light, but better than knocking down your neighbor's house that blocks the sun

  • Can you set up a mirror from another spot to shoot thowards the panels ?

  • Any further updates on this and whether or not you were able to get around the bylaws? Nenshi might be more receptive and supportive of this sort of thing than previous mayors! There's also a green home in the neighbourhood of Scenic Acres that might have solar panels installed too, for decades now. Happy new year from a fellow Calgarian living in Montreal and trying to see whether making one of these would be worth it!

  • You should went to "home depot". if you don't have one around ..,go online. Rated at 185 watt cells cost like 399.00.well worth it and you have it for RV instead off or house.

  • I would try redirecting the light with mirrors on my panels

  • Try putting them each next to your top windows or on a high metal or wood frame. Also put a mirror on the bottom and face them with max deflection for more sunlight facing towards your cells. You will almost double your energy out put as well as already said by another youtuber..

  • wtf i hope you did put them up! who cares... is your property

  • why not use a couple of mirrors to direct light on to your collectors? you could use use lighter weight acrylic instead of glass. in this way you could direct as much light as you wanted by adding more mirrors. Just a thought, i can't see the total logistics from the video so its hard to know.

  • Thats bad ass. You construct those or bought em?

  • i have dealt with city officials here in Ontario over bylaws. "We" dealt with a neighbor who moved in, started an illegal business, did all sorts of illegal dumping adding lot fill = Nothing done. So I bet City hall cannot be bothered with the small stuff that really does not effect your neighbours. Unless it can be proven to be detrimental.

I'd say put them up and see what city hall can do, they can send letters, have people talk to you but they cannot really fine you without real cause.

  • Put them on the roof and set them up to look like sky lights . I'm sure they haven't outlawed skylights yet. If any body says anything just tell them that they're "electronic sky lights" Bylaws don't mean anything untill somebody files a complaint. Remember clothes lines were outlawed and now there back because they lower the carbon footprint , solar panels are the same thing.

  • "fellow Canadian from Ontario"

I'm in Ontario and it depends where you live, what the city by-laws are.

In my town you cant put up a windmill," they are ugly" and drop your nabours property values. At the same time they are paying off farmers and town council members, so they can put up wind farms and charge us more. They just changed the laws so they can now bypass the town so we have no say.

  • I am a fellow Canadian from Ontario and this is the first i have ever heard of a by-law that stops you from putting pannels on the roof. Calgary is not a small city so this makes no sense until you realize the province is ruled by shit head conservatives who care nothing at all for the planet!!! I am heavy into all kinds of alternative energy projects and i would laugh at the fool who told me i couldn't do things to save money!

    Stay Safe!

  • what is the cities problem with panels on the roof? isnt that where they are supposed to fekin well go.

  • is you box hooked up to a thermostat if so how did you hook it up im almost done but im stuck on the thermostat

  • Mount them as high as you can on the side of the house.

  • The tops of the pannels are in the sunlight. Raising them up is good. Try turning them sideways to get them out of the shadow.

  • celsius

  • there is a old saying id rather ask for forgiveness then persmission, just put them on your roof and fuck the city and their bylaws, let them argue the case against having them , how stupid would they look.

  • @hoffa1968 totally agree city halls too busy with real issues i know dealt with them alot!

  • i own 7 acers in Tn i do what i want when i want ,If some one came around here telling them what they could do and couldnt i dont think they would be around long .good luck though

  • Can you hang the panels off the side of your house? I can think of a couple of different ways to do that so they would still be portable for camping. Good luck !!

  • It makes me angry that so many government agencies are praising the use of green power sources, while at the same time, the same government agencies will regulate/restrict the use of the same power sources. It's just retarded. I'm going to start voting for cartoon characters to fill government positions.

  • use mirrors to direkt the sun to your solarpanels, you will see they even produce more juice

  • @kamarudski Dude...great idea...I'm building a unit soon and am thinking about doing the same. My unit will be on my roof against the house for sure. I'm just wondering how I can mount a mirror below the unit in a way that the wind sheer here in Winnipeg won't tear it apart...very tough to do since cheap mirrors are well....cheap...and break easy....lol

  • Stay in Canada , this is the land of aholes.

  • I don't know if anyone thought of this but this is what I'm doing...build it so it fits into your window. its not on your roof and you don't need any insulation. I'm not finished because i don't drink pop often...

  • stick them on a post

and is that shadow from your garage?

    mount them on that

and move your solar heater to second floor then build another one also

  • move to America, its the land of the free

you can do anything you want with your roof in America

  • good technology but poor minded.

  • dumbass canadian

Fuck the canuks its your house

  • just put then on your roof you pussy omg

  • you cant put them on the roof? but could you buy a higher column and erect it higher?

  • Cement two 4x4's in the ground, and put them on a horizontal pivit pole across the two 4x4's.....space the 4x4's as far apart as you like....

  • You should just move to Vancouver. The winters are milder.

And we have a better NHL hockey team.

    ;-)

  • booo

  • fuck the by-laws. There only to scare you. put them up if it works better, you bought the fuckin things, and they're on your own property.

  • Like KANTBE said, maybe turn them 90 degrees and mount them right under the roof's overhang. That should be perfect.

  • Can't put it on your roof? What a crock of #$#$#

They want us to reduce, but you can't put a solar panel on the roof. Who cares? Look at all the satellites on people's roofs and chimneys.

  • Give the City a Notice of Understanding and intent that you will be putting your panels on your roof. Give them 30 Days to respond to your notice, which they won't. After that you put up your panels.

  • the solar s stand vertically , just rotate them horizontally and place them apart !! may be !

  • degrees ? Celsius or Fahrenheit?

  • Celsius.

  • fuck em ,think think ,read the law ,it always has loopholes, put them on a fucking tree, GOODLUCK

  • Nice job on your set up !

Ironic they want us to go green but so many laws on installation etc force us to buy/use 'establishment' fuels - what exactly do they want??

  • wuberman i'm very interested in learning where you went for your tools, and how much the solar cells cost you.

  • I went to my garage for tools. The panels cost a fortune at $300.00 each for the thirty watt panels. The middle panel I took off my trailer, it came with it. Total of 97 watts. Im not sure what you mean by "where I went for my tools".

  • Have you considered putting the solar panals up on a pole? The city probably does'nt have an ordance against it, because they would'nt think of it. Face one SE, one S, and one Sw. Hope all works out for you.

  • Never thought of that, but I needed my solar panels to be portable as they double as my power source when camping. They are able to be unplugged loaded on my pickup and taken with me to a campground.

  • @wuberman You could make the pole collapse able and have a hole in the ground in your yard to put the pole when at use at your house.

  • what is thermal stress abou? Is it better to use 2 pieces of glass or just 1

    thanks for video updates.

  • When you use one piece of glass the top half gets hot while the bottom stay's cooler. The glass is subjected to a large amount of stress. The glass may shatter. I found that using two pieces of glass reduces this stress. Plexi glass plastic warping could also be reduced by using two seperate pieces.

  • ah I see--thank you sir

  • Great tip about the advantage of separate top and bottom glass pieces. Thank you.

  • you could use a battery hooked to the cells i found that even with a little light they will keep the battery charged and you have enoung power for the fan

  • Also if you can't mount the solar panels higher on the wall, why not simply redirect sunlight with wall-mounted mirrors? While you're at it, parabolic mirrors are great for focusing the sunlight onto the solar panels, but you don't want the "tight" point of the beam to hit your panels as it may be too intense and burn them EVEN in the winter. Compensate by moving the mirror or the panel about 2 feet away from or toward the focal point of the beam. Cheers! Keep getting greener. :-)

  • Hi, it seems that the angle of the sun is returning to a point where the heater gets alot of sun again. It was -25 the other day and it was happily harvesting heat. I am going to play around with fresnal lenses this summer, maybe mirrors also.

  • Excellent. Please do! I and others are eager to learn, and I hope you can save money for years to come. Good luck, hope to see updates soon. ;-)

  • Hang them high on the wall. Inlet/outlet holes threw the wall. Dry vent covers(spring loaded hing)on the interior to keep cold air out. Built mine 2 months ago. I have a small fan plugged into a thermostat switch that pulls air out when the box reaches 80 degrees, turns off at 60. All automatic. Box is 6'h x 3'w x 10"d. 1x10 frame. Black 1" exterior sheathing inside,1"foam insulation board with foil on back to reflect heat loss back into box. Furnace stops at 10am, on around 7pm. in Lou.,Ky.

  • Agreed about the hang em high. But mine is so ugly that It can stay where it is. To permanently mount one I would make one that looks good. this one was to test the concept, which passed with flying colors. One thing I found is if you use two seperate pieces of glass there is no thermal stress on it. The lower one is cooler and the top is warm, no stress at all.

  • Your right it is obvious. It was a quick build unit just to mess with the concept. When placing one of these units consider the lower angle of the winter sun. I made mine it the fall and well never gave it much consideration. I will say it,s fun to mess with.

  • I know this is obvious, but i will say it any way.You have to get it into sunshine.put on wall a little higher.check mine out.my2cents

  • Calgary bylaws prohibit windmills within city limits. The day after I shot this small video it was working for a couple of hours. Lots of reflected sunlight.

  • what about a windmill to inverter to fan..the peg
