he must be using old drivers, im using catalyst 9.12 and my q8200 overclocked from 2.33ghz- 3.25ghz with crysis at the same settings but with 8x times aa i get a average of 43 and a maximum of 65. but thats just crysis games like devil may cry 4 u get 200 fps plus, cod 180 fps plus it is a beast

Yes, the single 4890 would be the wisest choice for comparison with the 280GTX IMO. But it wasn't around then. The single 4870 is the lesser priced card compared to the 280GTX tho. The 4870X2 ups the ante to about $375+ compared to the $329+ for the 280GTX (both cards more or less in some brands). Now, since the release of the 295GTX $529+ it would be an interestingr bench test. Then when the 4890X2 is released....?

On the cards, I agree with ATI's outlook on making gpu dies smaller rather that bigger. Bigger isn't always better and I think nVidia needs to realize some truth to this.

Crysis was originally optimized for Nvidia cards so I would say the GTX 280 got a bit of an advantage over the 4870 X2.

Since one 4870 cant beat a GTX 280, AMD had basically put two 4870 GPU's onto one graphic card (ie. the 4870 X2) to be able to compete with the GTX 280.

btw if trubritar hadn't benchmarked the cards on Crysis the 4870 X2 will definetly outpace the GTX 280

My friend have the 4870x2 and i have the 9800GX2. My friend in crysis wars 1440 x 900 all fanatic and AAx4 have 45 fps. I in 1280 x 1024 all fanatic and AAx4 have 45 fps but not is equal the 1440 x 900 = 1296000 pixels I have 1280 x 1024 = 1310720 pixels. My 9800GX2 need more work that in 1440x900. The 3D marks are ProATI always.

The HD4870x2 wasn't built to match the gtx280, it was built to be the rival of 9800gx2.

And still it keeps up with gtx280 and beats it in many aspects.

Let's please stop with this monopolium thing. Many games are optimized for Nvidia only, and it takes advantage on that (Crysis for example, was developed with Nvidia cards that weren't even released).

?? not exectly getting what you say :S its because of the side port that the gfx card is treated as one. oh...and with the sideport at stock, the 2 gpu's comunicte with eachother at 6gb/s...which is a bit less than ok (u would rather get 4 4870 instead ;)) but if the sideport were to be unlocked, there would be 25.6gb/s of comunication!!! thats huge for just the 2 gpu's!!!of course...my spu has the same bandwidth...but so many things have to communicate with the cpu :(
