Calling this solo impressive would be an understatement. Your chops and control are amazing, but I can imagine the judges thinking that you gave them only one of the big four categories that they like to see, being groove/timing, independence, musicality/originality, and chops. This is simply my personal philosophy with drumming, so don't take this as me saying that I am the most well-rounded drummer or that I am better than you. I am no where close to either.
You play great, the way I strive to play, but unfortunately not on your level. I'd like to see the three who won, I'll bet they used a lot of double bass. Who's knows why Rick Van Horn or Weckle didn't applaud, it really doesn't matter, you got your point across, good luck.
If you were to give Tom Selleck the skills of Buddy Rich and then some, you end up with Dick Cully. He is not Buddy, he is not Gene Krupa nor Louis Bellison, he is a World Class, the one and only Dick Cully. He is a one of a kind thoroughbred drummer. I find his playing very inspiring. I personally do not compare him with anyone as he is unique and has unbelieveable skills.
i have played with rick van horn personally. he is a complete moron and is extremely conceited. dont worry about the lack of applause from him. a great solo! rick didnt even deserve to be a judge. im serious.
Rick Van Horn has nothing to be conceited about. He should have been working at the snack bar at this event. I remember him watching me set a world speed record years ago. Watching and or talking provides no Validity to a drummer's ability whatsoever hence his role and career choice in being a writer is best suited. Dick call me we need to catch up, miss ya love ya.
At times, Dave Weckl can be very egotistical and conceded. (I wont bore the reader with my personal experience here). Dont get me wrong, I think that he can be a great player but his ego, mannerisms and arrogance, can overshadow the talent that he has. I hope Mr. Weckl reads this post and will, perhaps, rethink on how he has treated others in the past and should treat others in the future. Remember, Mr. Weckl you get more flies with honey than you do vinegar.
Maybe originality was being figured in to their decision ? If thats the case Dick wouldnt have scored any points from me there. His technical skill can not be disputed however. I am happy that he plays like Buddy. Someone needs to.
Amazing and insane solo, and yes, Weckl wouldn't be able to touch this. However, i'd like to see Cully do what Weckl does. Cully's solo is modeled heavily on Buddy's approach whereas Weckl's approach is totally original. Weckl will stand the test of time whereas Cully I believe will not. Originality is what stands the test of time.
Defination: Original, adj. 1. belonging to the beginning; first; earliest. 2. new; fresh; novel. 3.able to do, make or think something new; inventive. No one is totally original because music is structured and follows form. A roll is a roll, thus the purpose of the endless array of apparatus to (sound) or look original. Striving for greatness is admirable, sadly mediocrity rules. I don't sound like Buddy, I'm just playing at his level as many others do and there is only one "greatest".
Total mastery of the instrument. Great solos aside Dick's True virtuosity comes through his pinpoint accuracy in driving a band and he is always at the helm of a great band.
Hey man, I've seen what you do and what Dick, Weckl, Morgenstein do and you're all masters. Certainly Dick should've won this (I'd like to see the winner). I really would like to see Dick go against buddy (both in their prime). Weckl is the man, no doubt. Dick has modeled his style from buddy, whereas weckl has copped from everybody. I would like a lesson from either of you, but no sense badmouthing dudes unless they deserve it. Were they jealous?? maybe. Was weckl taking lessons w/gruber
GREAT solo Dick! You and I actually met and got to chat at the Chicago Vintage Drum Show a couple years back. I told you then that I thought you are an excellent player with GREAT CHOPS and don't deserve all the crap you have to listen to from these idiots that think THEY know it all. This is a solo that THEY should listen to! And for the record: You should have won!! Oh yeah,
Cully is probably the closest one can get today to Buddy Rich (he, Charlie Adams and Art Verdy...) but there is still a huge collection of little details that seperates them from master drummer Buddy Rich.
Hey Dick, I was there on that day!! That was killer! Marvin Smith and Rod Morgenstein were totally diggin' it!

With all due respect, this is the man Gruber, and Chapin need to study. This the ultimate in musicality and technical prowess.

I agree with him!
