On 25 January 2012, Luke Williamson announced on his father's official web site that Nicol Williamson had died on 16 December 2011, after a two-year struggle with oesophageal cancer. According to him, Nicol Williamson passed away peacefully.
"He gave it all he had: never gave up, never complained, maintained his wicked sense of humour to the end. His last words were 'I love you'. I was with him, he was not alone, he was not in pain."
"Williamson disliked actress Helen Mirren, with whom he had had an affair, when the two had appeared in a stage production of "Macbeth", and the feeling was mutual. John Boorman, the director of Excalibur (1981), purposefully cast them as rivals "Merlin" and "Morgana", against both of their protests, because he thought their real-life disdain for each other would generate more tension on screen."
Whats a fascinating and paradoxical fact about this supreme film is that Mirren and the Merlin guy detested each other in real life and complained to the director about being paired. the director thought it would add cinematic tension etc. It sure as hell worked out great!...Funny about the thin line between love and hate!!~!!!!
i love this movie i have watched it 200 times and still could watch it another 200 times the actor who played merlin was brilliant thats just how merlin should be potrayed. merlin is my favorite character.
She is an ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS AND SEXY WOMAN...it just pours out of her...even now, when she's Older - she's got the Persona and BODY, that makes much younger Actresses and Women, choke! All that and Talent Too!
Stella, your video is way out there. Helen is breathtaking here, almost more captivating than ususal, and the song makes you hear Merlin's frenzied reaction to her. This takes things to another level!
I can see by your comments that you enjoy theatre. Let's hope Helen Mirren will make her theatre comeback in the end of the year. I am looking forward to that. :-D
YOU DID IT AGAIN! Such fun! Isn't he the one she played Macbeth with? Lovely how these classical plays run over into this movie, I think you can still see the 'big acting'in their eyes and movemnts. Remember she got this lovely comment about her lady Macbeth, it's on the HMAS site. Every shot is lovely here, she outplays everyone else. your music underscores this so awesomely, thanks!!
Thanks for your kind comments and your enthousiasm ! ;-D
You're right... Nicol Williamson played Macbeth. And I agree with you...: " Excalibur " cast comes mostly from theatre and maybe that's why their speech is more theatrical. I do love their phrasing though.
i never got the chance to watch Excalibur. So thanks so much for the video. Btw, was Helen's character a villain here? I can't possibly imagine a lovely person like her to play a villain. =(
Yes, Helen Mirren plays a truly villain in " Excalibur ". The last clip with Merlin telling " Never again, never " is from the beginning of the film. Yet, even if he swears he will stay away from love, he can't resist Morgana and he reveals some secrets he should have kept to himself. ;-D
RIP for the best Merlin on screen.

The acting is just so poor. Why so much over-acting?

Even seen the 1968 Romeo and Juliet? Try a search on youtube. You'll think the same thing for sure.

Hellen mirren was gorgeous in that movie and the music use chose to this vid is a big bonus cos I love Hooverphonic.

She is a bit more predatory than the "young urban professional single girl"; and too sociopathic to be "lonely".
But it's an interesting comparison.

Morgana is the archetype of the young urban professionnal single and lonely girl....

She is an aspiring witch: she wants Merlin's mentorship in order to overthrow his protege and derail his agenda.
