Lloyd is not technical enough and hasn't redefined himself enough to be part of the pantheon of great saxophone players IMO. He is one of the most lyrical though and what a TONE!!!!
I agree with chubbypuppys. why does the establishment have trouble ackowledging the greatness of LLoyd. From then to now with current 4tet... a true catalyst and sound seeker.
Interesting how my brain is conditioned a certain way. If I couldn't see the video, only heard the audio, I wouldn't guess Lloyd is playing on a metal mouthpiece. I associate metal mpc with a much brighter edgier sound (Trane, Brecker, etc.). Lloyd has a rather light tone somewhat like Getz, though not as airy, I think. And yet, not as much body as Getz. Hmmm... I guess it's amazing how so many different colors can be had from the saxophone.
Ive read that getz used a 5 reed and thats why he has that airy sound but I think lloyd is phenomenal, not only does he have a beautiful tone but he has a very unique style. truely believe that he ought to be classified with the greats like coltrane, brecker, roland kirk... etc

he's right it's charles lloyd. lovano first played with dejohnette on scofield's cd time on my hands which was in 1990
