My pom is going to be 4 in June. Any suggestions on starting her on a raw diet. I'm nervous ok SCARED to death something might happen to her. But I do see the the rationale behind feeding them raw and would at least like to give it a try. BTW what's the benefits you've seen as say compared to other poms or small dogs in general. Thank you for your time.
@RedSatin69 -I was just as scared as you were. But the more i fed him the more used to it i got. I started with ground beef, pork and or turkey. I saw that he prefered beef and pork. So i began to bring home pork neck or beef spare ribs. These are small enough for him to gnaw on since he weighs only 5lb. On his own, he has learned how to chew around the bone and leave the hard fiborous tissue behind since its too tough for him.
@RedSatin69 Also, since ive been feeding him raw, i noticed that his poop doesnt smell!!! That IS the best part of the whole raw feeding since i have to clean up after him. I encourage you to look up Dr. Karen Becker. She's a vet that has a channel on youtube called Marcola Pet Health. She explains the benefits on raw feeding down to a science. I hope you find this helpful :)
@maharley27 Thank you for your responses. They really make me feel better. I'm going to do a little more research but I think I'll be taking the plunge so to speak. :O)
@RedSatin69 My pom was 7 when I started him on a raw diet (he's turning 8 this year)! It's never too late. He loves it and isn't picky with it unlike when he was given kibble. It's natural to be scared but do your research and start small. If you're afraid to give her full pieces of raw meaty bone just start with a commercial frozen raw diet that is ground. That way you can get comfortable with her eating raw and then you can introduce pieces of meaty bone. :)
@pooti Thank you so much for your response. It is greatly appreciated. When you say "commercial frozen raw diet" are you referring to just regular hamburger, ground lamb etc.? Again thank you.
@RedSatin69 At "health food pet stores" you will find commercial frozen raw diets in the freezers. They are ground raw (meat/organ/bone/veggies/other supplements it varies) and are typically portioned (ie: 1 oz chunks). Companies like "Nature's Variety" and "Pets4Life" have these. Since they are ground you don't worry about the bones and you can get used to your dog eating raw food before you continue onto raw meaty bones.
@pooti Thank you again. I will pick some up this week. LOL I just saw your videos. I can not tell you how ADORABLE your Cider is. LOL My Zoe is just as naughty but I love her to death. I need to get her back in training to teach her some good tricks. LOL it's a good thing they are smart and cute. :O) Thanks again Pooti you've been a tremendous help and seeing your baby being cute and all has really sealed it for me. :O)
@RedSatin69 Haha no worries! Glad I could help! I'll probably post something new with Cider eating raw sometime if that would help. Chances are Zoe is going to love her new food. :)
@pooti definitely would help but of course at your leisure. I'm going to start her on the pet food raw for a few months and then gradually ease her into raw boned meats. I may even post a video or 2 of her progress. :O)
@SiliconeBunny -LOL! Actually, i try to give him only an hour or less of time to consume the raw meat because freshness is very important. The best part about feeding him raw is that when he goes potty, it's oderless!!! Yes, it has NO smell! which is awsome me for when i clean up after him! LOL! Itwas a little scay at first when i first gave him raw chicken but now its just normal. He's been on raw for two years now and sometimes kibble for in between feedings. He loves it! :)
i dont think you should be feeding ur dog raw food, theres a much higher risk of them getting worms or sick in general. Dogs were bred by humans over many thousands of years and they differ quite a bit from wild dogs who can withstand eating raw meat. i mean humans used to eat raw meat too before we learned to cook our meat, there was a reason why we did it.
@helldemon44 -Its perfectly fine to feed them raw. In fact its what they're supposed to be eating. Its a spieces appropriate diet. We can eat cooked for a reason. Dogs have higher stomach acids that can kill bacteria and paracites. But i usually freeze the meat for 3 to 7 days prior to feeding it to my dog to rid of any paracites. I give him only a 30 minute window of time to eat to keep things fresh. He is full longer and his poop doesn't smell at all :)

So cute how your pomchi just scoots under your bed with it, does it make your room smell after a while, like a butchers?
My dog would literally love me more than ever if I gave him this, I bet his farts will be bad though. Like when he eats chicken. Eugh
