Hot Tuna always rocked, Jorma & Jack were the backbone of JA. They just weren't "main stream". Groups like Moby Grape, Quick Silver-people look at me with the duh expression. How can you not know who John Cipollina was, blows my mind. Good stuff!
@fritzmerde almost every day I mention these bands, esp quicksilver, peter green's fleetwood mac, and snowy white, and I get the same 'duh expression"'. Quicksilver is so ridiculous underrated, even people with good taste in music who recognize great bands from the 60s/70s often don't know who they are. It's brutal. But all it takes is one listen of Gold And Silver, and they're hooked. Then I get them to move into the better, more complex tracks.
WOW. I was at this show. It was the fillming of the show In Concert at Bananafish Garden In Brooklyn. I think it was on 46th or 48th Street. I rmember it well. They filmed about 8 acts that night including the American debut of the band Focus,The band featuring Jan Ackerman on guitar. I remember Tuna didn't get on till about 2 in the morning. There was a delay due to a small fire in the theater. They did 4 songs.I think they were Keep on Truckin,Water Song,Come Back Baby and Sea Child.Great Show.
@johnboymac2000 ..Wow, the Groundhogs. I saw them at an outdoor concert in July 1972 at the Pocono's Racetrack in PA. There were quite a few bands that played that day. I was tripping my brains out and really blazing, when right before they came on, the sky started getting dark and ominous. Tony McPhee, the guitar player, started playing this acid shit and really freaked me the fuck out. I thought that it was going to be the end of the world. True story. I stopped taking LSD after that.
@exumatheobeahman Thats quite a story, its also the last show they played on the tour because right after that he broke his wrist in a horse riding accident and the rest of the tour was cancelled and they fired the drummer right after they got back to Britain.Incidently, your not the first person who I have heard from who stopped taking acid because a show tripped their ass out while they were dosing.I am in envy of you because you saw them at their peak(Pun Unintended)

@lcolby11 SO OLD???? Maybe in comparison to the SF hippies of the day. Papa John was 53 in 1970 and made solo albums regulary throughout the 70`s. In 1986, at the age of 69, he rejoined Hot Tuna for gigs at least for a two year+ period and played with an incredible feeling and intensity. Jorma is 70 today and his skills, especially on acoustic guitar, only seems to increase.
@Fruscianteistheman No, not at all. I am a big Peter Green fan. The intro to Come Back Baby is a fairly standard common lick, Rattlesnake is a more original lick. I have tapes of Jorma playing that lick as early as 1966, Peter Green was yet to join Mayall at that point. But in any event, both are great players.
lol you clearly misinterpreted my comment. I'm not saying hot tuna took the lick from fleetwood, just pointing out the similarities. it wouldn't surprise me if green and jorma look to the same influences and came up with similar licks.

@MrEgnmrph Hi Gene, Glad you liked it. I have audio of the whole tV show but only this song on video. In Concert was a great show. Tuna (acoustic) also did a great show on Midnight Special but I don't have video of that.
@keo774 I'll see if I can within the next month. I have better quality audio of this show than off tv, but this one is with the video. As I recall they did, Keep On Truckin, Water Song, Comb Back Back Baby and another that escapes me right now.

Good save! VHS goes bye bye after a while. Don't even mind the TV you had at the time, l That's the way Hot Tuna looked to me at the Filmore anyway.....Thank you
A note on "In Concert". brought the 'fear level' down for the family...they (the old folks) actually got in to it! Thanks to you too In Concert and Midnight Special...oh and American Bandstand let's not forget.
Yes indeed, great history. Hard to believe its over 35 years ago!!. Midnight Special was also a great show. Tuna (just Jack & Jorma) were on around 1973 or so, playing acoustic. around the time of the release of Quah. They did 4 songs or so and were great!! It was acoustic. I recorde d the audio and am still looking for the video. It was when J&J had crew cuts.
TUNA !!!!!!! My first concert !!! Commack Arena. $6.00 gen admission. was leaning on the stage in front of Papa John !! it was insane !! this started my downward spiral. hahaah... summer of 1970 .. toooooo long ago. still see them everytime they are around. My son is going to Jormas guitar camp this weekend! how cool is that !!!!!!
I have been to Jorma guitar camp many times myself, it is a great place, great people and the best time I ever had. Jorma is a very down to earth guy and the amazing thing is how he doesn't hide anything, he'll show any lick you ask for. your son should have a great time.
Papa John,, a master. good ole tuna,, hes featured on burgers,,listen to true religion, sunny day strut, keep on truckin,, live album first pull up... johns other.. candy man,, and on and on,, tuna today is great.. see them while they are still doing yet living legands.. in any format.. god bless jorma..
No, I don't have any more or I would post it. I did tape the audio to this tv show (In COncert) at the time and 5 songs were broadcast, there must be video somewhere.
The FurPeace Ranch is a super cool place to see these guys. Spend a weekend in and around Athens, Ohio, go see Jorma and experience the best of SE Ohio....
On the Jefferson Airplane list, 2400fulltonstreetdotcom, it is discussed as an acquaintance of Jack's has it and it sits under the bed. Don't know for positive if this is true though.
Loved smoking and tripping to the Double Dose Albumn in the 70s-Hot Tuna was the Rock in the Airplane. Jack plays Yggrasil Bass (Yggdrasil is the Norse god whose roots keep the world together)
Was at this show, was at Bananafish Gardens in Bklyn, what a show! was for "In Concert" ABC, on the bill....New Riders, Gladis Knight & the Pips, Jerry Lee Lewis, Hot F#ckin Tuna, and the Grateful Dead! MAN!!! also making apperences around the theater, window payne!
I was only 10 years old in 72. But the older crew I grew up with made sure we had all of this. A few years later I was going to every show I could get too. Growing up in NYC I got to see alot of the acoustic stuff too. Best times of my life.
wow great stuff what a great band they were. I only saw them once and that was in knebworth england in 1976 when they were on the festival list with the rolling stones (I think) I wish they came over the pond more than they did but hey thats life. Maybe one day just one more time, come on Jorma and Jack come over to blighty and play a set for your limey fans
I was doing a search on Jorma and Jack's guitar camp and happened upon this gem - still amazing after all this time. I was lucky enough to see both Hot Tuna and the Jefferson Airplane with Papa John at the Winterland in S.F. and they were among the happiest concert events of the hundreds I've attended over the decades. Jack is still the pre-emenent bass player of our age and Jorma? What can you say? Perfection. Pure bliss here! So, thank you SO MUCH for this.
Mediocre sound notwithstanding, this is THE best rendition of Come Back Baby I've ever heard (and I've heard a few). Absolutely on fire -- and they know it, too. Superb musicianship and invention. And sooo sexy (Jorma at 4:24). Early Tuna took the "hard" side of JA to a higher/purer level, the apotheosis of Airplane. Looks like the Beacon Theater, NYC. Many many thanks, this is really jawdropping.
Hi, I have the whole of what was broadcast by ABC in USA at that time. I recorded it directly of tv, such was the technology of the time, but only this song in video form.
This is unbelievable. A live dvd ought to be released of them from the 70's. There is one on the Airplane though in saying that its not a concert dvd. Both were awesome bands.
Yes indeed. There were 4 songs broadcast by ABC on this "In Concert" show, so I as sure someone has a video of the 4 songs broadcast, as a minimum. Hopefully they will surface
Jorma sang quite a bit in JA, usually 2 songs per album starting with Baxters. Course, he was up against Slick & Balin who had great voices. He does and still has a great voice himself. On Volunteers he wrote that great song Turn My Life Down, but he said he couldn't sing it range wise, so Balin sings it

I spent most of my teenage year wearing a t-shirt that said "Disco Sucks" on the front and "Hot F*cking Tuna" on the back. My parents just5 loved it.

Good save! VHS goes bye bye after a while. Don't even mind the TV you had at the time, l That's the way Hot Tuna looked to me at the Filmore anyway.....Thank you
A note on "In Concert". brought the 'fear level' down for the family...they (the old folks) actually got in to it! Thanks to you too In Concert and Midnight Special...oh and American Bandstand let's not forget.
fullfrontaltubeity 2 years ago

My son is going to Jormas guitar camp this weekend! how cool is that !!!!!!
mrjintsfan1 2 years ago 3
I have been to Jorma guitar camp many times myself, it is a great place, great people and the best time I ever had. Jorma is a very down to earth guy and the amazing thing is how he doesn't hide anything, he'll show any lick you ask for. your son should have a great time.
FeitenFan 2 years ago
How about the Calderon in Hempstead or Jorma playing acoustic for 4 hours at the Suffolk Forum.....they don't do 'em like that any more !!
FeitenFan 2 years ago
Wow, wish we had the recorders then that we have now.
I had not seen Tuna in years because I thought they had broken up for good. Saw them at Skippers August 09. They still have the magic!

Larsbolander 2 years ago
On the Jefferson Airplane list, 2400fulltonstreetdotcom, it is discussed as an acquaintance of Jack's has it and it sits under the bed. Don't know for positive if this is true though.

Loved smoking and tripping to the Double Dose Albumn in the 70s-Hot Tuna was the Rock in the Airplane. Jack plays Yggrasil Bass (Yggdrasil is the Norse god whose roots keep the world together)

I was only 10 years old in 72. But the older crew I grew up with made sure we had all of this. A few years later I was going to every show I could get too. Growing up in NYC I got to see alot of the acoustic stuff too. Best times of my life.
HemiHead66 3 years ago 3
wow great stuff what a great band they were. I only saw them once and that was in knebworth england in 1976 when they were on the festival list with the rolling stones (I think) I wish they came over the pond more than they did but hey thats life. Maybe one day just one more time, come on Jorma and Jack come over to blighty and play a set for your limey fans
uxbridge1962 3 years ago
I was doing a search on Jorma and Jack's guitar camp and happened upon this gem - still amazing after all this time. I was lucky enough to see both Hot Tuna and the Jefferson Airplane with Papa John at the Winterland in S.F. and they were among the happiest concert events of the hundreds I've attended over the decades. Jack is still the pre-emenent bass player of our age and Jorma? What can you say? Perfection. Pure bliss here! So, thank you SO MUCH for this.
glitter1951 3 years ago 3
Mediocre sound notwithstanding, this is THE best rendition of Come Back Baby I've ever heard (and I've heard a few). Absolutely on fire -- and they know it, too. Superb musicianship and invention. And sooo sexy (Jorma at 4:24). Early Tuna took the "hard" side of JA to a higher/purer level, the apotheosis of Airplane. Looks like the Beacon Theater, NYC. Many many thanks, this is really jawdropping.

Hello. What a very rare video you have!!
Though I don't remember exactly, the first time I saw Hot Tuna was "In Concert".
In Japan, only one song was broadcasted in the TV show.
I think that was "Water Song".Because they didn't sing then:-)
Jorma played Stars and Stripe Strato with finger picks, not acoustic.
I'd like to watch that again and wish someone has it!!!
Anyway,thanks for share.
Jack is still my bass hero.

Hi, I have the whole of what was broadcast by ABC in USA at that time. I recorded it directly of tv, such was the technology of the time, but only this song in video form.
FeitenFan 3 years ago
This is unbelievable. A live dvd ought to be released of them from the 70's. There is one on the Airplane though in saying that its not a concert dvd. Both were awesome bands.
leadzeppbelly 3 years ago
Yes indeed. There were 4 songs broadcast by ABC on this "In Concert" show, so I as sure someone has a video of the 4 songs broadcast, as a minimum. Hopefully they will surface

I have a VCR with Happy Traum teaching this standard 12 bar blues style.......I like his version a heap more better than this mash-up crap...!

Well, they are two different things I think. Acoustic vs Eletric, they are not supposed to treated the same.

Happy has been an instructor for Jorma at the FurPeaceRanch.

I always wondered why Jorma never sang in The Airplane. He has a great voice!
PeterCRissKISSgod 3 years ago
Jorma sang quite a bit in JA, usually 2 songs per album starting with Baxters. Course, he was up against Slick & Balin who had great voices. He does and still has a great voice himself. On Volunteers he wrote that great song Turn My Life Down, but he said he couldn't sing it range wise, so Balin sings it
