I could be wrong, but I could swear Alder lost his voice because of the fact he forced notes too much in the earlier days (Eleventh hour and such). Same thing happened to Labrie of DT (I know the story of the food poisoning but I don't believe it). Few are the metal singers with really high notes that don't lose the voice sooner or later
@Abisso666 Or he managed to gain range when he was young without actually taking good care of it. Doesn't he smoke? Also, I got the re-release of ''Perfect Symmetry'' which is good to hear how Alder was live. In 1988 (release year of ''No Exit'') he was able to hit the high notes in ''Silent Cries'', a year later i 1989 he already lost that and sticked to falsetto.
And to be honest didn't Alder use falsetto (in the way of faking high notes) on ''The Eleventh Hour''?
People shouln't complain about Ray Alder's lack of long hair and that his voice has changed. It's obvious that he can't hit that high notes anymore. I was never a big fan of these anyway and I prefer his ''warmer'' voice of ''Perfect Symetry and ''Parallels''. Check out the quietus version of 2010. He sounds fine there.
Really, I get tired of all the fuckin critics! How many of you have toured? How many of you have played show upon show? Do you think it's easy for your vocals to hold up days, weeks & years? I have toured & played & sang 'til I lost my voice. It's harder than you guys think. And, I'm not even close to their level.
I'll never forgive Ray for cutting his hair...why? was he going for a job at jiffy lube? Bullshit! No excuse. This might sound shallow but it is wrong on many levels!
A School band do their Job better than they do.Bad voice.ASK Alder why he don't sing with high powerful prog agression.Di Biase has gone. The second guitar has gone.Perfect Symmetrie has gone.I visited the backstage with them on Tour in early 90s, The early prog days!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't think Ray wants to hit those notes anymore. On his solo project "Engine" he keeps it pretty low and makes it more emotional. If he really wanted to go out there and hit those notes, he would get a coach or vocal trainer.
He always struck me as a guy who was just naturally gifted, who didn't focus on all the discipline and training.
Just shut up. I was there and this video doesn't make justice. They were absolutely great...really. Ray can't sing as 20 years ago but his performance was emotional and involving.
The rest of the band sounded nothing less than perfect.
I truly remember that day and FW were the best performers, together with nevermore and virgin steele.
All Ray needs to do is quit the cigarettes and find a good vocal coach (Brett Manning)to re-train his vocals... trust me, he can sound as good as did 20 years ago if he goes that route.
ray alder need to STOP singing for fates warning... he WAS AMAZING. and he still is! but.. they deffinetly need a higher singer.. ray cant do what he used to... redemption still kicks ass
Although it is true that Ray has lost some of his vocal range, he still is a very good singer. He is passionate and sings from the heart (i don't know how else to put it)and that is exactly what FW need.
You have to see him live to know what I mean.
And it's not like their music now needs power metal screams and the such.
show me any singer that after touring for years and years doesn't change his vocal style.I'm sure in the studio he could still pull it off but has choosen a more comfortable range to sing in making for a better live preformance
No, I'm not feeling better. I feel sad that you are apparently too much of a retard to a) read 'Evolution 07' in three different places, and b) not clued in enough geographically to figure out that 'Florence' is in Italy. So who is the 'loser' here....?
Fuck! i didnt know that ray didnt sing in awaken the guardian until now! i thought he just started singing deeper or his voice changed....like metallica
John Arch was better technically, but Ray has more vocal charisma. he sounds a tiny bit off here, but his voice is actually better lately. it's just the performance i think
The vocals do sound a little off on this particular day, but Ray Alder is my favorite vocalist ever. check out his new band Redeption "origins of ruin" great vocals! Fates Warning rules! See ya!
these guys are not at the top of their game. Stop using buzzwords to convey what you mean. The last time their were on top of their game was around perfect symmetry with the original members.
And BTW Perfect Symmetry had only two of the original members of FW in the recording, Jim and Joe DiBiase on bass. John Arch had already been replaced on vocals by Ray, Steve Zimmermann had just been replaced on drums by Mark Zonder, and Vic had been long replaced on guitar by Frank Aresti

amen. maybe it was all just studio magic that made him sound good on the records.

yeah he sounds ruff in this video, but I've heard other recordings from 07 where he sounded just like No Exit.. So I think this was an off day.

Ray is one of the best metal singers. His voice if you asked me modernized if anything.

Maybe cutting his hair was the catalyst for loosing his vocals. I mean, look what happened to Sampson! Those vocals were rough!

That is not Ray Alder and this is not Fates Warning. It is a pathetic poser band playing a very bad cover of a Fates Warning song.
