Freddie's HIV developed into full blown AIDS very quickly, at a time when the treatments available were very limited. Jim may very well have contracted HIV from Freddie, but he never developed full blown AIDS. So those are the reasons why he lived and Freddie died. It's tragic we lost a true legend, but all the evidence suggests Freddie himself had no regrets; he accepted that no playing it safe with sex led to him catching HIV. That's why he never had a "pity me" attitude when he was dying.

HIV is the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, with leads to AIDS, or Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. HIV is a non-curable virus that weakens the immune system, so freddie didn't die from AIDS, he died from the sickness caused from a weakened immune system, I think it was pneumonia. A STD is a sexually transmitted disease, which can be curable like gonorrhea or syphilis, and more often is a bacterial infection. Bacterial infections are curable whereas viruses are not curable
