You obviously don't understand how our government works. Dems have controlled both houses for 4 years. Pelosi has passed every bill she wanted. She couldn't have defunded the wars? Obama is C.I.C., he could end the wars anytime. The Libertarians on the Right have never supported these wars.
Staying in Iraq and afghan will never make things "right". This is a stupid argument created by the Left to justify our continued presence while Obama is president.
We're going to reduce spending by increasing it, we're going to reduce the deficit by increasing it. We're going to reduce taxes by repealing the Obama tax cuts.
We already have buyers remorse from the Spend & Pretend Republicans.
I didn't see any Democrats running on a campaign promise to the end the wars. Did any promise to cut spending? Federal employees make twice the amount of people int he private sector. They also have far superior insurance and retirement benefits.
Cut Federal salaries to match those in the private sector
Let Federal employees contribute to a 401k like the rest of us
Let Federal employee benefits to match those in the private sector.
The Democratic firetrucks came racing to the house Bush set on fire in 2008 and the Republicans have been shooting at the trucks and cutting the hoses ever since.
And people wonder why there is still some more work to do to put out the fire.
The only reason there is uncertainty about what the tax rates are going to be next year is that the Republicans fought like hell to stop Obama focusing the tax cuts on the "poorest 98% of Americans".
Like a LOT of other things, that would have been done a long time ago if Senate Republicans weren't filibustering EVERYTHING.
We don't even have a deputy secretary of the Treasury(!) because Republicans are filibustering the President's nominee. For no reason.
If cuts are in order, start with cuts for senators and congressmen who have bloated benefits, 6 number salary government workers, stop the 2 wars and all the sub-contractors´, etc. .if they are willing to do that, than we may willing to follow.
No one fantasizes that the Republicans will ever be able to *balance* the federal budget, as Clinton did, twice.
But if they want to at least reduce the federal budget deficit AND cut taxes on the super-rich by $700 billion dollars at a moment in history when growth is still low then they've got to find a way to make massive cuts to the federal budget. They have never and will never be able to do it. Under Bush, the Republicans spent like drunken sailors.
@ReliableInsider Clinton balanced two budgets with a Republican Congress, a Democrat controlled Congress has never passed a balanced budget. Look it up.
The Republicans spent like drunken sailors and the Democrats are spending like drunken sailors on Meth.
Because the economy is still recovering from Bush and we need MORE consumer spending to save corporate America, we have to find ways to cut spending that don't directly hurt middle-class Americans.
Because unemployment is still 9.6%, we have to cut spending in ways that don't COST more jobs and throw millions more Americans into the job market (i.e. firing people who are doing good work).
Pass a healthcare bill that not only fails to bring down real healthcare costs, but it will cost $1.2 trillion to implement.

Obama gets reelected, democrats keep the senate, and if they dont regain the house then theyll come close to it as republicans loose a significant number seats.
@fixedupdice Dems didn't run on any of their accomplishments this year. What is their 2012 campaign platform going to be? More unpopular socialist programs? Another wasted stimulus? Maybe Dems will promise to save a few million more jobs or they will try to revive Cap and trade? Dems have no plan B, just more unpopular policy that tasted bad the 1st time.
youre right. Dems DO NOT run on their accomplishments. they DID run on what they campaigned for... back in 2006-2008. then they did more or less what they said they would do. then they got voted out the house.
but they got voted out NOT because of the things they did, but because people have short momories & we respond better to slogans from republicans no matter how stupid & backwards they really are.
@fixedupdice What the Dems campaigned on, was not what they actually accomplished. Maybe me and the majority of Americans are wrong but we don't see the Dems legislation as positive accomplishments. People on the Left keep telling themselves there is a messaging problem. The message is clear but we aren't buying it.
4 years of Dem control in Congress and unemployment has doubled and the deficit has tripled. Spinning the hard facts hasn't worked so far and it won't sell in 2012.

There are 100,000 mercenaries and 50,000 non-combat troops in Iraq. Are they shooting non-combat bullets? Gitmo is still open, U.S. is still practicing rendition and the Democrats have had 4 years to reverse the Patriot Act, instead they have broadened it.

reduce the deficit to help with the governments ability to work? YOU are against it.
implemement wall street regulation, the lack of which caused all this? YOU are against it.
your BIG TALK about getting government "off our backs" only helps those people who commit crimes.
@fivestarmichael The firdt place we need to cut spending is defense. Right now we're spending more than the next 5 largest countries with armies. There's something very wrong with us spending that much cash without actual wars needing the funding. We spent 1.2 trillion on theses 2 wars and have nothing to show for it. Surely you don't like the level of spending our defense dept. has?
i didnt put notice on your quoutation of the article to say there was anything wrong with you doing that. i i gave notice to point out the IRONY of it. because it looks like youve fooled yourself into thinking that because the bush tax cuts didnt cause the recession that it isnt a problem unto itself. sorry to burst your bubble but IT IS. we CANNOT i repeat CANNOT extend them for the richest 2% americans. doing so hurts our ability to pull our economy out from where it is.
"Implement real Wall Street regulations, something Dodd/Frank bill has not done."
and what would the republicans do? NOTHING. "republicans" & "regulation" are COMPLETELY ANATHEMA to eachother. REPUBLICANS DO NOT REGULATE. they DEregulate. its also true that they DONT GOVERN. their aim is to PRIVATIZE government & make law & order "work" for those who have ALOT of money.
weak as it is, the Dodd/Frank bill is SOMETHING as apposed to NOTHING we wouldve gotten from the GOP.
@fixedupdice The only thing that will make those two countries right is to get out now. Let them fight their civil wars and return to their norms. We could have gotten out 4 years ago if the Dems had seriously wanted to defund the wars, but they didn't because they are corrupt. The best answer is to only support candidates who support immediate withdrawal. How many Dems campaigned on ending the wars?
@fivestarmichael Of course you do, unless of course you payed cash for your house, car and college tuition. I have a mortgage, that's 10X my earning, a car that equals my earnings and school loans that are 3x my earnings. I doubt you pay cash for everything. Hell, most people have an outstanding balance on their utility bills. The fact is that most people borrow in some way. To say otherwise is simply idiotic.
@Rushtrdamus It is not the same. It is one thing for the gov. to take out a $10 billion bond to build a bridge and pay it back over ten years. However, the fed. gov. has taken out a $10 billion bond than borrowing the money to pay back the bond. Which would be similar to you borrowing money to make your car payments.
You are making payments on a loan. The gov. is borrowing money to make payments on a loan. Big difference.
@fivestarmichael Hence the need for us to pay our taxes and shut the hell up. WE are our Govt. WE need to pay the bill. You keep talking of the feds as something other than it is, a group of OUR representatives. I know where 700 biliion is right now. We can use that to offset the 2 failed wars we waged without raising taxes to pay for.
@Rushtrdamus In one comment you insist we shut up and pay taxes and the next comment you complain about paying taxes to fund wars. Obviously we are not being well-represented, there is billions being spent on needless bureaucracy and the military.
We have over 700 military in over 200 countries and it is time to end our occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. The Dems have been in control of Congress for 4 years and they haven't stopped funding. Nor has Obama.
@fivestarmichael No, I simply want you assholes on the right to either shut up and pay your taxes OR be ready to cut spending where it will matter most. You guys have had it both ways for too long. Please explain the last war we HAD to fight? Now, take all that wasted cah since WWII and we could pay every SS payment, have healthcare for all americans AND pay off the deficit. As a former soldier, I understand that we must have a defense, we don't need WASTED spending.
Yet the priorities your party has bee workin on have been about abortion and turning health care to what it was.

@fixedupdice Yes, I quoted myth #4 exactly, which is why I put quotations marks around it.... do you know what quotation marks mean?
For some reason you have mis-characterized everything I have written.
Reducing the deficit by cutting spending is the correct approach. If we roll back to the 2007 budget our current revenues would be sufficient.
Implement real Wall Street regulations, something Dodd/Frank bill has not done. Reduce regulations that make it harder for small businesses.

@fivestarmichael
and i NEVER said we can make those 2 countries "right." i want our troops out of those hellholes MORE than you do.
fixedupdice 1 year ago
@fixedupdice The only thing that will make those two countries right is to get out now. Let them fight their civil wars and return to their norms. We could have gotten out 4 years ago if the Dems had seriously wanted to defund the wars, but they didn't because they are corrupt. The best answer is to only support candidates who support immediate withdrawal. How many Dems campaigned on ending the wars?

@fivestarmichael
How many Dems campaigned on ending the wars? it was on the democrat platform during the 08 campaign.
how many republicans campaigned to keep those wars going FOREVER?
ALL OF THEM (except for Rand Paul). how nice of you to CONVENIENTLY forget that.
fixedupdice 1 year ago
@fivestarmichael Of course you do, unless of course you payed cash for your house, car and college tuition. I have a mortgage, that's 10X my earning, a car that equals my earnings and school loans that are 3x my earnings. I doubt you pay cash for everything. Hell, most people have an outstanding balance on their utility bills. The fact is that most people borrow in some way. To say otherwise is simply idiotic.
Rushtrdamus 1 year ago
@Rushtrdamus It is not the same. It is one thing for the gov. to take out a $10 billion bond to build a bridge and pay it back over ten years. However, the fed. gov. has taken out a $10 billion bond than borrowing the money to pay back the bond. Which would be similar to you borrowing money to make your car payments.
You are making payments on a loan. The gov. is borrowing money to make payments on a loan. Big difference.
fivestarmichael 1 year ago
@fivestarmichael Hence the need for us to pay our taxes and shut the hell up. WE are our Govt. WE need to pay the bill. You keep talking of the feds as something other than it is, a group of OUR representatives. I know where 700 biliion is right now. We can use that to offset the 2 failed wars we waged without raising taxes to pay for.
Rushtrdamus 1 year ago
@Rushtrdamus In one comment you insist we shut up and pay taxes and the next comment you complain about paying taxes to fund wars. Obviously we are not being well-represented, there is billions being spent on needless bureaucracy and the military.
We have over 700 military in over 200 countries and it is time to end our occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. The Dems have been in control of Congress for 4 years and they haven't stopped funding. Nor has Obama.
fivestarmichael 1 year ago
@fivestarmichael No, I simply want you assholes on the right to either shut up and pay your taxes OR be ready to cut spending where it will matter most. You guys have had it both ways for too long. Please explain the last war we HAD to fight? Now, take all that wasted cah since WWII and we could pay every SS payment, have healthcare for all americans AND pay off the deficit. As a former soldier, I understand that we must have a defense, we don't need WASTED spending.
