When i get signed i'm gonna make the move to bring this funk back, us teens need something we dont have to be ashamed to tell our parents we listened to.
i'm 16 and i really wanna bring back this great "teen friendly" music. it helps that im a multi-instrumental musician. but what helps more is that there are millions of kids out there just like me that barely listen to the radio or watch music videos because there's nothing out there that relates to our age group. who really wants to mute their ipod or change the channel everytime a parent walks in the room? i have some covers i've done of Prince and associated acts music if u want to listen.
Prince had to definitely be their major influence back in the day b/c so many of their songs sounded like he was writing and producing behind the scenes!
@Dnics23 True. Hell, who know's, Prince might of felt a bit threatened by RFTW because from the sounds of it they are just as good as Prince. And belieeve me i looove Prince, i do, but geez, other 80's artists are just as good as him and RFTW are living proof of that
@missNYCmodel true. and i kinda think he acknowledged that a bit. i mean take Zapp and Roger, their funk hit just as hard as Prince's funk, yet at rehersals Prince and The Rev would Jam off of "more bounce to the ounce"
Boy I tell ya RFTW is the shyt 4 life these guys bring out the best of real music back n the days and I was rocking these boyz back in the days in Fla everybody was like who the hell is this U playing Bigdog and I use to proudly say RFTW and they laugh @ but guess who had the last word baby lol thanks RFTW for grat music and memories baby RFTW 4 life!
the 80s was the last great decade of real black music. Blacks dont make real music like this anymore. Thus real funk and R&B is almost dead except for some of the old school master still out there like Teema Marie.
Well, it was actually that whole area of the country. All of these cats knew their instruments-it was influenced by Prince, but a little unfair to say they owe their entire sound to Prince.Remember Prince was influenced by Rick James and others as well. This was a Midwestern thing. Michigan, Minnesota., Illinois, Indiana. a whole area of black musicians, rare these days.
Well, Prince cites Rick James as an influence. And did you know that they were once in a competition for the same woman?I know what you mean regionally, but Prince definitely tried to imitate Rick James especially on his early albums.Prince came out in 1978, Rick a few years earlier.
I know the lowdown. Prince and Rick are my favorite artists. if anything Prince was influenced by/learned more from Rick when it came to performing live. When it comes to the music they arent very similar.(in my opinion. i was born in mpls. and have lived in mn since so i tend to take things involving the mplsound to heart)
Whew, I thought I was the only one who liked this song when it originally came out. I played it non-stop in my dorm and everyone would tell me to fast forward the cassette. It's as hot now as it was then!
GREAT song..i had just purchased the 12" of Love you Down (Human Toy is on the B-side) and i absolutely love keeping it on rotation..it's like you just cannot stop loving this song..it's addictive
I haven't heard this whole song before; I only heard a snippet. I really like Ready for the World, I only have their "20th Century Masters:...cd". I plan on buying an album of theirs.
Great song great power pop and the funk guitar when Riley says "world" is just a genius arrangement. They could have added a standard guitar solo, but the bought the funk on that track. RFTW had it's own style on what I call Nu Wave R&B of the 80's.Prince and the Revolution was not the only R&B who could play Funk, Rock, Soul Those Brothers from Flint were great too..
My dad had this album @ my Gma's house I already love "Oh Sheila" and "Tonight" but I fell in love w/ this song too

Rick James is from Buffalo, New York. you are right this is a midwestern thing(Mpls.) but rick james had nothing to do with it.

I would agree with you there. If you're a Minneapolis man I would have to defer to your knowledge. These kinds of discussions are cool.
