This is fantastic - thanks so much to the crew that permitted the video to be taken at speed on the mainline; Like many, I'm never likely to experience it first hand, but this gives a wonderful insight into what it is like.
Thanks for risking the camera in such extreme conditions too.
@pauluksteam Thank you Paul, it's a privilege to occasionally get the chance to ride on the footplate and I am pleased to share it. Cheap digital cameras make it a less expensive hobby, although my other videos of the run out of King's Cross were done with some specialist kit and a lipstick camera mounted on the running plate!
Not in the slightest. I've not written a camera off so far, although Cromwell's tender locker door did sever a microphone lead on the last job I filmed with the bullet camera. I used to be a motorsports photographer - this is much less likely to get me killed, but a bit rougher on the kit, admittedly!
@re78019 Ive taken many vids from the coaches like this but envious of your results. Found out over a number of years do not attempt to hold the camera steady , have a piece of stiff foam between camera and it to the vehicle you are on , coach, car or footplate, much more stable pics as a result. I will certainly enjoy the ride again, and again. Many thanks for giving us this opportunity. Beeman37
Best advice I can give is not to try and hold the camera 'still', but to accept you and the train are moving and soften it as best you can. Break your knees, and stay away from hard surfaces with the camera! Most of the footplate footage I do is with a little digital compact camera, usually held with one hand...
I remember as a child seeing 70013 at Bressingham. It's fantastic to see her unleased where she belongs on the mainline out of London, particularly from the footplate.
Planejunky: thats the Train Protection and Warning System (TPWS) lights and control pannel. It's basicly an addition to the AWS (Automatic warning system) to help aviod signals passed at danger. If you have seen the little metal grids between the rails thats the track part, working out how fast a train is slowing down and applying the brakes if it's moving to fast to stop short of the signal. (Also known as Totaly Pointless Warning System) :p
The nearest I'll come to standing on a footplate at speed. WONDERFUL. What a job huh? The coal looks good. # 13 likes a lot of top air? More sure-footed than a Bulleid. How come?
Fantastic film ! the fireman makes it look easy placing each shovel full with great precision! who are they give the crew a mention? Thanks for posting 5* Brian
Fantastic video - some of the best shots of the footplate I've ever seen. If you put that it is about a footplate ride in the title I think that you would get lots more views - as your video is worth at least 10K hits!
Brings back memories of good footplate rides I had when I lived in India. (Good job that I spoke Hindi!).
If you have any more footage would be great if you posted it.
Fantastic video. Sounds really AWESOME too!

Yes, excellent video! As you say, all kudos to the crew for their cooperation.
A very creditable and educational view from the footplate by everyone concerned - and of course Ollie herself!
I didn't see the explanation of that light panel till after I posted my original comment! - Sorry!

Just out of interest, what are those coloured lights in front of the driver's position? Looks like a modern addition to run on the main line.

Much apreciated.

Excellent, even as a diesel fan nothing can compare to the sheer rawness and involvement on the footplate of a kettle at full chat ! 5*
