@1coolgirl12 You really shouldn't speak unless you know what you are talking about. portal is a standalone game that uses the same ENGINE as HL2. However, portal lacks the files for zombies and such which HL2 has. This is the reason why people who have portal, but no other source games cannot spawn zombies.

@nitrohedgehog you must be mistaken. i know that they dont have sounds, flesh particles, and all that but it dosen't require a Source Engine game for spawning stuff like Zombies. Portal only shares its default game files with Garrys Mod and others if ported yourself. Almost all of the Source games can spawn Zombies. TF2 had them removed for few reasons. 1. TF2 is not a NPC guided game. Well, that's the only reason. But, Portal is a standalone mod of HL2. Go to a HL2 map on it. No problems? Good.

@1coolgirl12 Portal is not a MOD. MOD's are free player made variations of an existing game. Portal was released as a STANDALONE GAME as in nothing else is required to run it other than itself. MOD implies they took HL2 and modified it a little to make something new. That is NOT what happened. They used the same engine but built it without the intention of use with HL2 (hence the HL2 weapons sticking out of Chell in funny places).

My friend tried it without Half Life 2 and spawned Zombies. He saw them perfectly. No sound, but moved around.You can get Zombies without the need of owning a copy of Half-Life 2 if Portal is a slightly edited version of Half-Life 2. See my point? If you don't get it, learn more about the Source engine.

@1coolgirl12 Your friend probably has the SDK which comes with the purchase of any Source game. People who have no source games who took advantage of the free portal offer didn't get that and couldn't spawn zombies.
