In the early 60s, I was a Marine stationed at Parris Island and training troops. I was also a cowboy and happy to find that the southeastern states had a lively ameteur rodeo circuit. While working for a supernice small rodeo producer, milton Carter, who was also a successful tobacco farmer, I met an older cowboy named Johnny Evans. John was a real character. He and I hit it off, became friendly, and visited when we could. John had a beautiful 35', self'contained, trailer in which he pt 2
@42sundown...pt 2...lived, on and off the road. One hot day we had just finished getting everything ready for the nights performance and John invited me to his trailer for some ice tea. We were sittin' at his kitchen table drinkin' tea and John asked me if I had ever heard of Los Indios Tabajaras. He might as well asked me about nuclear fission. I had heard a little Flamenco and spanish guitar, but really didn't know any names. John got out some 33 speed albums, showed me some pictures pt 3
@42sundown...pt 3 and we must have listened for a couple of hours with very little talk, and I became a fan. This is a marvelous way to spend a hot Georgia afternoon. There is such a sweet taste, and such class to this music. Thanks for some great memories both old John and Los Indios. John was 50 yrs old then and still riding saddle broncs. If he were alive today he would be 98 yrs old. I sent a nice picture of John on a bronc to the International Rodeo News in l964. Hope some remember.

Clearly one of the greatest love songs of all time. The composer's wife was named Maria Teresa. I have always wondered what a difference the song's history would have been if he had had a jeaous wife.
I've always loved the style of Los Indios Tabajaras. My favorite was a tune called Brazilian Serenade. I wish I could find it. Simply beautiful! Their version of Cavatina was incredible, also. Cavatina was the theme song from the movie "Deerhunter".
Both songs were on an album called Rainbows. It is not available in CD form, unfortunately.
@pascuiirina : I was 10-11 years old when this came out. My friends thought I was an idiot trying to play this on my cheap guitar. Not cool when Rock 'n Roll was popular! I just loved it!! Clean, simple and melodic!
They say ( I read somewhere ) that President Nixon liked this. I hope that doesn't detract from it. It is so relaxing, so nicely done. No one could done it better than Los Indios Tabajaras.
"From Wikipedia: María Elena" is a 1932 popular song written by Lorenzo Barcelata (Spanish words and music). It was published by Peer International Corporation of Mexico.[1] The English words by Bob Russell.
The song was dedicated to María Elena, the wife of Mexican President Emilio Portes Gil.
This was written by Buddy Holly for his then wife Maria elena,,i first heard it from a guitarist called Bert Weedon,,,but this is a good version,,,Brilliant !!

I am 39 now. My parents were the first who introduced Los Indios when I was a child. Everytime when we have a vacation at the beach, we would pull up a lazy chair, face it towards the sea and play all of Los Indios instrumentals over and over again...infact we sleep so peacefully...WOW! No vacation is complete without Los Indios.

@violetrod LOL Another Maria Elena that was named after the song. My parents were both musicians & this was the first song that they danced to. My Father, played this every day on his guitar, my Mother used to sing this to me. I am looking for the Tommy Garrett version if anyone can find it.

Such a beautiful work, enhances my memories of the time it was so popular, even though I was serving my country in a foreign land and not too happy about it! GREAT STUFF! Thank you!
My first job after high school was waiter in a Chinese restaurant. This was the ONLY music cassette that restaurant had( year 1971) and it played from 10am till 10pm each day. It has become part of my life,I now have a CD in my car.
When I was in the Air Force stationed at Biloxi, Mississippi, I walked into a bar with a friend in 1963. The JukeBox was five cents a play so I put in 50 cents and played this piece 10 times! No one complained. Either they liked the music or they realized I am 6’ 7” tall! This is a great piece of music!
I remember reading that this piece was recorded in mono state. RCA liked it and, in their studios, they isolated the bass from the melody the re-recorded it in stereo.
The very first Guitar instrumental i heard as a 7 year old boy growing up in Suva Fiji Islands in 1966 was this one - I loved it then and still do now !
Their style was something else - just ....I just cannot find the words to explain it.
Matchless guitar playing! the music of Los Indios is a soothing remedy for the burnt out soul...the music lives on...they have become legends! God bless their souls!
Maria Elena, by Los Indios Tabajaras. is one sweet sounding tune from 1962. I've recently seen the vocal version of the song performed by that latina cutie Anacani, from The Lawrence Welk Show, a few weeks ago and it's sounds as good as the instrumental version.
These two guys were incredible then, and their music is incredible now. I was a young kid when I first heard them, and never forgotten how beutiful this music was.
@pelyceb Great comment Dog! I almost started crying when I read it. My mom died when I was 14, so I know what you mean bout thinkning back to when mom was still young (and healthy)
The singing version of Maria Elena is plain. This guitar version is excellent beyond words, with unique guitar runs imitated by many guitarists. But there is only one Los Indios Tabajaras, nothing to compare to the duo. Classic guitar piece of all times.

LOs Indios Tabajaras are "Brazilians".

i bought this album in 1962 and very nearly wore it out......the story that went with
the indians was something like finding them in the deep jungle and they played
like professionals........it added a bit of awe and wonder to the great music'

Absolutely my favorite by these geniuses of strings. I remember my mother teaching me to dance to this while I stood on her feet as a kid. Easy gentle perfection. Thank you for sharing this.

Thomas05091942 1 year ago
@Thomas05091942 . You're 6' 7" !! I would not have complained either, not for your stature but for the beauty of the interpretation!!

I remember reading that this piece was recorded in mono state. RCA liked it and, in their studios, they isolated the bass from the melody the re-recorded it in stereo.
Is that right?

The very first Guitar instrumental i heard as a 7 year old boy growing up in Suva Fiji Islands in 1966 was this one - I loved it then and still do now !
Their style was something else - just ....I just cannot find the words to explain it.

Maria Elena, by Los Indios Tabajaras. is one sweet sounding tune from 1962. I've recently seen the vocal version of the song performed by that latina cutie Anacani, from The Lawrence Welk Show, a few weeks ago and it's sounds as good as the instrumental version.

truly beautiful in any genre or transposition. brilliant accents and phrasing. patience and pauses. thanks for posting
goatbashing 1 year ago 3
The singing version of Maria Elena is plain. This guitar version is excellent beyond words, with unique guitar runs imitated by many guitarists. But there is only one Los Indios Tabajaras, nothing to compare to the duo. Classic guitar piece of all times.
