The true story is actually quite different. While the majority of the charachters did exist to some extent there are two large differences I believe. Firstly, the idea that the murders were for 'revenge' arn't true. Sweeny Todd as a man, was just a phycotic killer. And secondly, Mrs. Lovvet had no idea where this meat was coming from. Sweeny just 'appeared' with it. However the rest reamins fact. Sweeny did lose his family and he did have a romantic relationship with Mrs. Lovvet as in the film.
