That three speed auto is a performance killer, it'll live a lot longer life if you gear the axles down (numerically higher) a bit. Make it a lot more enjoyable to drive to, with better gas mileage. I like jeeps, although I recently picked up an old K-5 blazer that I'm working on.
I had the 2.5L with a 5spd Manual. After I lifted it and put 33" BFG M/T with steel wheels on, it was almost un-driveable. Put 4.88 gears in it and it will be about the same as stock acceleration, worth every penny on and off road. And while your in there get a detroit locker and some larger spline Alloy USA axles.
@chopursticks Ya I sold mine, but regret it everyday. It was still worth having looking back at it, the things it could do on the trails more than made up for how it drove on the road. I about to start over with a 4.0l, but don't sell yours if its not giving you problems.
@mudslinger1984 Oh yea, I'm not planning to sell mine soon at all!! When I bought my Jeep, it was the first car. It was two years ago when I bought it; it sat on stock suspension, steel wheels, and 31s with only 22,000 miles!! It was in prestine condition w/o a scratch and garage kept the whole time. Now with it lifted and stuff, being 13 years old, it only has 40,000 miles now lol. Good luck on your build dude!!
Sorry for answering so late (from a previous post in Jan.)
I did not run it through a dyno, but the HP gain is noticeable. The (mild) cam upgrade does kill low-end torque a bit, meaning that under 3,000 RPM not a lot happens. Once you get it between 3,000-4,000 RPM, the little motor wakes up! Of course, larger tires (and the infamous 3 speed auto tranny) will still slow you down. Conservatively, somewhere around 10-12 HP may be gained.
@Ctenosaura My motor is also the I4 but its in a Cherokee(XJ). We rebuilt it and added some goodies internally. Its got a lull in power around 40-50mph though. (2400-2550 RPMs). In 4th Gear as soon as it hits 55mph it just wakes up and actually pulls you back in your seat much better when its to the floor. So these motors like the high end better than the low end.
This vehicle is not safe to drive (if you ever get on the highway). My old car was a cavalier and the 0-60 in 12 seconds sucked. Now have a 2010 ram with the Hemi. Much better and that damn thing goes!!
@msrednic Actually once it's on the highway it'll do 75, 80. IT's floored the entire time and it will often downshift so it's sitting at redline, but it will do it no problem.
@msrednic dude this car clearly has a problem because it was going very slow at the higher speeds, however a ram is extremely slow and crap. dont tell people their car isnt safe when you have the biggest piece of crap on the planet
@1598hi We no longer have this car, but I can assure you there was nothing wrong with it. That is what happens when you put 33"x12.5" off road tires on a car with 3.73:1 final drive, a 3 speed auto, and a 120HP 4 cylinder. And the car is shaped like a brick.
@1598hi LOL. I'm laughing at how stupid you are. Yeah, 390HP and 0-60 in less than 7 seconds is "extremely slow." You are one retarded motherfucker. What piece of shit do you drive? I'd love to ram you and your piece of shit off the road into a concrete barrier.
By the way, you didn't hurt my feelings, because you are stupid and don't know anything.
@msrednic Sorry, But Ram sucks ass in speed (And everything else). I can assure you i'm not dumb, Neurosurgeon. You seem quite into your car, How about you race my 760Li? (I also have a 2002 Jeep Wrangler, Ass kicker.)
@1598hi I agree with you but have you driven ANY rams? 2500, and 3500 are faster than the chevy's and fords ive driven but the 1500 is about the same if not slower. but 2500 may be the fastest 2500
The 2.5L may be a dog when it comes to speed, but it is a tough little motor, with a 'whimsical' timing that gives it that trademark 'clatter'. Mine has 31" radial super-swampers, NO lift, Billstein shocks, and aluminum 15x7 wheels; rear discs brakes, front performance rotors.
Engine:
Turbocity intake + K&N filter; Flowmaster Delta 50 muffler; Borla header; Fire-Power ignition; Flex-a-Lite fan; bored throttle body + spacer; and a mild performance camshaft by Hesco. Runs on 93 pump gas.
i have a 98. also a 3spd auto 4 cyl. I just increased to 33s and am looking to regear. my stock ratio is 3.73 like yours. the question now is, 4.56 or 4.10?
i have a 2.5L, and its my first jeep. and my second vehicle. im not very satisfied with the speed performance, seeing as i cant get it past 70. but im wondering if a 2.5 will be able to handle as good offroading as much as a 4.0L
I have a 1985 model year AMC 150 4-cylinder. I have it modded as much as I can without having to worry about emissions and such. It will do 0-60 much quicker than what the guy in the video was able to do. However, if I remember correctly the 99 model year only had 125hp at the motor (110 at the wheels) and like 140 ft-lb torque.
My 4-cylinder has 158hp (motor) or 136hp at the wheels with 170 ft-lb of torque.
just a question, im thinking of buying a jeep. but i cant decide between the 2.5 and 4.0L.. how would the moter proform with a 4"lift and for example 35" or bigger tires.. would a 2.5 L be enough or should i go for the 4L?
@bladadupa1234 If you have a choice, get the 4.0L. The 2.5L is fine offroad, but as you can see, it's pretty slow on the road. The 4.0L would get you around town much better.
@rudolphna54 there are two problems you have that makes yours slower.
1. you have the automatic. They didn't make autos with many gears so they are long and drawn out. 4 gears compared to 5 is a fairly big difference.
2. you have 33" tires and stock gearing. get it re-geared and it is much better. I drove a CJ7 with the iron duke 4 cyl. first with stock gearing. Absolute dog, would not even do 65 and struggling to do it. The guy that owned it re-geared it and it hit 75 no problem.
@gt90guy <y 2.5L sounds like a rod is about to come out of the side of the block. but she will still do better than what i saw in this video. i also have 33's with a 4 inch lift. but the difference is i have a 5 spd manual and i changed the diffs out to dana 44's i have to ride on the clutch more than i like to starting from a stop because of the large tires and gearing but it dose ok. i will need a new engine soon. that is going to suck. :-(
@MrGizmo757 How did you manage to kill the 2.5? The 4.0L will bust a rod if you redline it all the time (long stroke), but never heard of the 2.5l doing it.
@rudolphna54 the 2.5L was like that when i bought it. By the looks of everything else on The jeep My guess would be neglect. i have so far fixed everything else rebuilt the lift kit i just cant afford a motor right now. thats the only thing left that needs to be fixed i already took care of the rest. i traded a bmw with a broke trans. for it straight up. since i work for a jeep dealership i came out on top of that deal.
@bladadupa1234 dude get the 4.0 liter for sure. It is great for offroading and fast onroad. I have one that does 0-60 in 7.5 seconds. Lemme know what you decide to get?
@bladadupa1234 we have a 1995 jeep rock crawler 5 speed stick and its great on and off. it has a 6 inch lift and a 4 inch body with shackles on 35 inchers. and a friend of ours even raced it in the morongo valley search n rescue in 2006. and today we kept up with traffic without flooring it once. (except we floored it in a tunnel it has a flowmaster exhaust) so if it where my choise id get the 4 banger stick.
hahaha i didnt realize how much slower the auto was than the stick because i have a 2.5l tj in stick and it goes 60 in about 12 or 13. (mite help that it has an cai, headers, throttle body, and catback)
@Colinpatrickcantrell caravans have power surprisingly. lol seems dumb but ive seen caravans drift on the way up the mountains here in california. HAHAHA
Have you changed your speedogear? If not the speedometer will read about 50 and you'll be going 55mph. The accuracy will then shrink exponentally the faster you go.
My Jeep MJ has the AMC 2.5L TBI I-4, 4spd manual, AMC20 Rear axle with 4.44 Gear's, LT235/75R15C MT tires . . .
it'll run 0-80mph in less time , , ,
I'm guessing the lower gears shorter tire and 4 forward speeds has some thing to do with that tho. . . taps rev limiter at 88mph . . .22-26mpg . . . not bad for what it is.
Yup. We really need to regear to 4.56 or something, but we are holding off till we replace the rear axle with a Dana 44 or Ford 8.8". Your tires are also much smaller, and having a manual which generally have shorter gear ratios will help immensely.
Yeah, just have to be careful till it gets up to speed. Strangely, the highway ride is pretty smooth, albeit loud. It'll do 75, but that's about the limit lol.
