  • I always expected Nixon to sound like the Nixon head in Futurama.

  • uh no, correction

    AUGUST 8, 1974

  • This movie made me cry.

  • This is one of my top ten movies to watch- sure it's a docu-drama. Albiet that many think the movie JFK was factual. That aside. Nixon=Not a celebrity and never a darling of the media-I can't dismiss his impact considering who got us into Vietnam in the first place. I guess that's the way that political terms go: Unmessing someone else's mess while pushing personal agenda. Am i wrong?

  • FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON

  • Hopkins is amazing.........

  • What a great speech. He was a flawed individual, but aren't we all. I think the epoch between 1973 - 2001 will be known as the age of Nixon, "a whole generation of peace". Mr. President, we could use you now.

  • Nixon was a great president. He resigned before impeachment. He was a true president.

  • @DarkPlaneDragon no he wasent he was a crook don't you remember the watergate scandal nixon is in idiot and a crook.

  • Marvelous...get chills everytime I hear this. Hopkins is one hell of a reciter.

  • Wonderful moment from the film. Everyone was in tears. And this video has great images that match the audio. To me Nixon was a philosopher/poet/politician. My goodness he was much more interesting and intelligent then the politicians of today. The movie which this audio came from was surprisingly sympathetic to Nixon even though it was an Oliver Stone film.

  • Being Estonian and having great interest in history and politics also having done some comparative study about American presidents I must say that Mr. Nixon was most ABLE president after Second Word War. We havent seen as able president since then. But as often happens with able and intelligent people generally, they have great insight and that can make them icredibly fragile.

  • A very underrated speech that not a lot of people get to hear, even students of politics and history. The speech is excellent and as another poster said very elegant. The end of the speech can be seen as Nixon reflecting on his own flaws and mistakes. He made a lot of them for sure, but he was a very smart man and achieved a lot diplomatically during a difficult historical period.

  • Nice job Manny! Thanks for posting.

  • It was actually Friday August 9th, 1974.... August 10th was a Saturday and Ford was President then.

  • @RJY4356

I'm sorry of about the wrong date. If I could go back and fix this, I would. I apologize if you feel deceived.

  • Not a big deal, don't worry about it. only off by 1 day.

  • I recall the day well. I walked in the door from camp, he just came onTV. I was 9 & everyone was so upset. In those days, people still cared about their Presidents. We had men of courage, unlike today. I miss Nixon & he was right, we don't have him to kick around anymore. I admire this man & his family. What humiliation he felt & still Pat & his girls circled their wagons around him. That's love when your wife has your back after all that! He cried like a baby when she died, and no wonder,

  • Nixon's only crime was covering up for his people. There is even honor in that. This man was a statesman, got us out of war, made first nuclear treaty with Soviet Union, opened China, Defended Israel with supplies in the Arabs wars, cared about the Average American. Nixon was truly a great President and how we could use his leadership today.

He never profited off the people. He was truly a great servant of the people. He had a profound love for his wife, and family. He was loyal man.

  • @devilndeep Couldn't have said it better.

  • thank god for vietnam the country, thank god, thank god thank god, beautiful people! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • I pity Nixon but, I don't feel sorry for him. He was WAY crooked. But so are many of the Kennedy clan. There's not much 'justice' for the "common" taxpayer with these politicians.

  • You need to show pity for someone, Is your heart that hard. Think about it and become human again

  • I pity you, since you don't know your history. You cannot compare one with the other. I agree, Nixon should not be pity, but admired.

  • where are the images of the movie? the ending.

  • God Bless Richard Nixon . . . .

  • Nixon now more than ever.

  • Regardless of what you think of nixon the man, this is an elegan speech in the face of a catestrophic defeat. It shows great good grace and even a touch of true wisdom. I doubt many current politicians would be capable of such a speech at such a moment.

Nixon was no angel for sure, but he became an ugly symbol of an ugly time, and as a complex figure he is not always given his due.

  • Compared with today's callow, shallow and disingenuous politicians, this guy wasn't so bad.

  • would nixon like the common man barack is my question? dont get all conservative defensive on me its just a question nixon may be my favorite American let alone president

  • Yeah, probably.

Nixon was always quite supportive in regards to civil rights for black people.

And after his very controversial loss to Kennedy in 1960 he commented to an aide that it was good that Catholics could finally feel that they were a part of mainstream America. He probably would have felt the same way about the effect Obama's win had on African - Americans.

  • didnt know that about the kennedy and catholics thing...Nixon was a great American

  • While I agree in the main, do remember that Nixon, arch-Republican, as a promulgator of the Southern Strategy, covertly supported Southern black Democrats because he knew it would alienate lingering Dixiecrats. This, along with Johnson signing the Civil Rights Bills 64, 65, led to Obama getting defeated in the vast majority of Southern states 30 years later.

  • He definitely had a ruthless and cynical side to his personality and the Southern Strategy was a classic product of that.

But he wasn't racist himself. I remember reading about how he defended a black class-mate's right to join his fraternity. Which in the South in the 1930's was pretty extraordinary.

Most people are well aware of his flaws but he had many admirable qualities too and it's a pity that they're so often overlooked.

  • I do not like Obama but he is not African American he is bi racial. Personally he should go back to the land of his birth, Kenya. You know they are spending millions fighting this issue in the courts but for 10 dollars, the great oracle with his wizardry of teleprompters ( love the school photo) could release it but he won't. If anything the Justice Dept, should indict him for obstruction of justice since he should prove it as it is required in the Constitution.

  • I am sure Nixon would not have liked Obama due to his political leftist views and not knowing what or how to be a President. He would be rolling in his grave like Ronnie is doing now.

  • "Personally he should go back to the land of his birth, Kenya."

LMAO!! You must be one of those dumb CUNTservatives because your stupidity shows in your lack of knowledge. PRESIDENT Obama was born in HAWAII jackass.

Advice......stop listening to RETARDS like that Glenn Beck fool. Poisoning your brain in epic proportions!!! xDDDD

  • Nixon was not from an elitist family and was a common man himself. This was a truly great President and was judged much harsher than those who have done far worse. He covered up his people, and however wrong that is, he never perjured himself or was impeached like someone else. He never sold out his country like the all do today. He would and should go down as one of America's best Presidents.

  • You mean Mr, Harvard? Please with that common bullshit

  • harvard? i dont think the reason he got in there was because his name was kennedy or bush going to yale right? POINT STILL STANDS for clarfication my point was that their backgrounds were common i dont think nixon went to city college right?

  • @Babaretro222 Actually Nixon went to Whittier , which is NOT even close to an Ivy League College ! Nixon's parents were poor . Look it up !

  • LuvChaos, a sad loser. Nice gay user name:)

  • Don't you have anything better to do than post on here, loser douchebag.

  • NIXON THE MAN

    a great man...

  • @kingdomcitizen924 FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON FUCK YOU NIXON & fuck you

  • Nixon was a man, had he never been paranoid and obsessed about his own shortcomings, would have been a successful president. As a result, his place in has been set and it will never be altered. He serves as an example of what happens when a president assumes that his powers are above the law.

  • It's pretty sad. Nixon was a very intelligent, competent president. He could have been a great one, and could have done great things, if only he had some morality.

  • Yes, Nixon was his own worse enemy but it was more an issue or loyalty in the day, although misguided, but a moral virtue all the same.

You have to judge him as he was judged, in a time and place that no longer exist in this day.

  • Good Bless Nixon and America. The best country in the world!!!!!!!!

  • After you, pathetic liberal idiot.

  • Hopefully you will rot in a sewer where you belong, trash.

  • Clueless moonbat idiot. Pathetic

  • or leaving with honor*

  • I think he should've just stayed his course, no matter what happened to him or what he did. He probably would have reached that known "Goal" that the US wanted in Vietnam. Peace with honor.

  • Lol at your seething rage and your gay stalking. No one cares what you think, fag. Keep watching Jimmy Carters defeat in 80 over and over and crying like a baby. Do it now loser.

  • Go watch Jimmy Carters defeat in 80, LuvFag

  • LuVChaos douchbag, go suck Jimmy Carters dick moonbat.

  • Truth hurts eh msellne? Damn right it does, you wingnut.

  • You are a stupid ass. Go suck Jimmy Carters dick you piece of shit.

  • Not for Nixon, but that's a heavy speech.

  • Fuck you

  • No, shit for brains..FUCK YOU. Don't like it? Good asshole.

  • You are too stupid to realize that Nixon was a lot smarter than a bottom feeder like you who presents no evidence other than mindless drivel. You are peasant and a racist. Fuck You.

  • History will judge Nixon kindly. He was a man with faults, but in the end he was patriot. Even good people do bad things.

  • I agree, sort of. Nixon had a lot of sick ideas of what America should be IMHO and a bit of an opportunist (at least up to '68) but his presidency was sabotaged by the FBI and CIA who objected to his efforts to end the Cold War by recognizing Cuba and going to China. He's lucky he didnt get the Dallas treatment, prolly why he didnt end Viet Nam sooner.

  • if he saw.....

    :)

  • I agree 1000%. The painting scene was emotional. Every person intrested in politics or just a good movie should see this film, reguardless of political afiliation.

One of the most motivational speeches i have heard. If see saw a begining to his end..then anyone can.

  • This scene is absolutely brillant. I was in tears from his breakdown, the Kennedy portrait scene and this pushed me over the edge.

The movie was incredible and Anthony Hopkins should have won the Academy Award for this performance.

  • The families who lost their husbands and sons in Viet Nam were already in tears.

  • The best and most ironic sentence: "Don't hate those who

hate you, for if you do, you destroy yourself."

  • its not ironic, h was saying dont be like him

  • He was indeed talking about himself, but he didn't

realize it (consciously). How about "...we need good

plumbers". (The "plumbers" were the guys trying to stop

leaks -- responsible for breaking in to Ellsberg's psychiatrist's

office. Ellsberg gave the Pentagon Papers to the NYTimes.

Revealed lots of lies. These characters also broke into

Democrats' office in the Watergate, trying to bug phone

to get info re Ted Kennedy.) Indeed, good plumbers.

  • Nixon was so close to being one of the greatest, follow the money.... he never made money.... and he got dealt one of the shittiest hands... only Lincoln could play a shitty hand.... the next president will not enjoy his job... Obama/McCain better know what they are getting themselves into

  • "Follow the money" meant see who PAID for the Watergate break-in and for the attorneys. The corruption was creating "the plumbers" who extorted contributions (with threats of IRS investigations), politically motivated break-ins, and the sabotaging of political opponents. Watergate was the illegal manipulation of the democratic process to insure the Democrats would nominate the weakest opponent.

  • He dosen't even talk about what he did wrong.

  • There's no need. He didn't do anything other presidents had done in the past. Me, I'd cheated all the way to the big office, just like my boy, Dick.

  • Maybe this is his worse act. He trashed every President by asserting that they all had the same low morals as he did. He also poisoned the well for all the Presidents who would follow. There was a time when Republicans didn't like but did trust FDR, when Democrats didn't like but did trust Eisenhower. Not any more. Republicans trashed Clinton, Democrats trashed Bush. What Nixon destroyed was the bond of trust and faith that existed between the people and our leaders.

  • nixon was a great statesman! By today's standard he would be a considered a moderate i just love this speech you really feel a lot of emotion in it

  • His story is one of trying his best to please all the people, only to realize that such a feat cannot and will not be achieved. His story is one of motivation with the cursed need to please all rather than the majority.

  • correction, it was delivered August 9, 1974

  • He resigned on August 9, he gave this speech the following around noon when his resignation was offical

  • You are correct, my apologies for the miscorrection.

  • This a tremendous speech. Very underrated and not remembered much today. Almost totally off the cuff except for the TR quote. A moving and genuine speech, and the last part is an eloquent apology for his actions, and he shares the tough lesson he learned after trying so hard to deface and discredit his opponents. He admitted that led to his downfall and accepted responsibility, which is more than I can say for most politicians today.

  • I agree definetely with you. It was a very nice speech. Too bad Nixon got badly missunderstood to be called "the president we loved to hate". Nixon the movie played by Anthony Hopkins as Nixon is a very good movie. He plays Nixon very well.

  • I wouldn't call this the greatest speech in American history, but it is a sentimental and I believe, heartfelt speech that does speak truthfully. I always liked the way he complimented and remembered his parents. I also liked the "Valley/Mountain" analogy and when he talks about the moments when the greatness comes being not when things are going well, but when people pull through the tough times in life. Nixon may have been crooked but at least he could govern, unlike today's politicians.

  • i like the tone with which he says up to the HILT! :)

  • I find it ionic in his speech that he says that this country needs good "plumbers."

Maybe if he had good plumbers at Watergate he would not have got found out.

  • that's quite amusing.

  • Exactly!

  • Best speech in US History.

  • To me, your video expresses beautifully the sentiment that this speech engenders. Superbly done.

Anthony Hopkins delivers this well, and was an excellent choice to play Richard Nixon. I found the movie to be disappointing, however. Oliver Stone: In "JFK" everything is a conspiracy, In "Nixon" everything is his own fault (untrue). The real (whole) story would have been a far better movie than Stone's rendering, which I believe is intellectually dishonest.

and I, too, watch Book TV...

  • So your not looking forward to Stone's movie about Bush coming out in November 08' then?
