I support the afghan war but either we should go in to win or get out. To send more troops with an understanding that we'll withdraw arbitrarily in 18 months tells the soldiers that if they die there it's for nothing and tells the taliban to simply hold out til the withdrawal begins.

This is by no means a good situation. We should have been doing this immediately after the Afghan invasion -- but this is about fulfilling the whole reason we invaded there. The Taliban ARE enemies and we need to defeat them as well as fix our mess. The end game is a crippled Taliban and a restored Afghan infrastructure which is a propaganda victory to counter the Bush failures.

Also, Obama ran on biartisanship it was core to his campaign, the bases will vote along partisan always. A yellow dog dem as they called themselves in the 60's are the same today, they'd vote a "yellar dog" into office before a republican, vice versa. Obama ran on bipartisanship and talked of reaching across party lines the entire campaign.

The only way to win with just your base is if its a 3 party run like Clinton vs Bush vs Perot, or Clinton vs Dole vs Perot. In a two party run you need the middle, not your base, your base are zombies, they'll vote for you if you had green skin, horns and walked on all four.

How do you announce both an increase in troops and a withdrawal at the same time?
I support the afghan war but either we should go in to win or get out. To send more troops with an understanding that we'll withdraw arbitrarily in 18 months tells the soldiers that if they die there it's for nothing and tells the taliban to simply hold out til the withdrawal begins.
Better to leave now if we're not committed to victory, don't let those boys die for nothing.

Afghanistan invasion was done since there were terrorists directly related to terrorist attacks to US people. And it was hte main operetional site for al'qaeda.
Iraq invasion was done because... well... no logical truthful point to it was ever given. North Corea has always been more of a threat than Iraq and the government keeps looking the other way for it.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying North Corea is a real threat to US, I'm saying neither Iraq nor North Corea were ever a real issue.

You know Obama for months on end talked about how there were insurgents near the northeastern border in Afghanistan. So now we went ahead and redeployed our troops. You'd expect them to go to the northeastern part of the country, right? Wrong. They put the majority of the troops in the southern part of Afghanistan where the Helmand Province is---the world's largest opium supplier (represents almost half of the world's opium production).

This is by no means a good situation. We should have been doing this immediately after the Afghan invasion -- but this is about fulfilling the whole reason we invaded there. The Taliban ARE enemies and we need to defeat them as well as fix our mess. The end game is a crippled Taliban and a restored Afghan infrastructure which is a propaganda victory to counter the Bush failures.

I've been to school and I saw my Mom kiss Santa Claus but I'm pretty sure it was my Dad dressed up like him. So I still think Santa Claus isn't real. And pretty fairly certain that there's no Anti-christ either. But hey, maybe I'm wrong about Santa Claus.
