I don't believe this was for the Ang Lee movie, because Kerry Gammill's book about his time at EFX spoke about a previous effort to make a Hulk movie that had a completely different storyline to Ang Lee's film, something involving a soldier turning into an insect hybrid.
@JCasR3 Ang Lee an idiot? His Hulk is a stone cold masterpiece and easily the most intelligent, well acted, well scripted super hero movie to date. It makes the Ed Norton film look very second rate in comparison. These guys did great work but i'v yet to see as wide an emotional range as that we got from Ang Lee's c.g.i hulk. Puppets just aren't up to the subtlety of facial expressions. Check out him head butting the canopy of the fighter jet as it flies up in the stratosphere. Amazing.
How is everyone saying this looks better than the finished product? We don't even see what this looks like completed! I liked the Ang Lee film, and this is fascinating, but I'm glad they went with 100% CG for the Hulk because an animatronic of this scale would really give itself away very quickly. (it has nice fluid motion here, but it still has that mechanical look)
The only way to make a REALISTIC HULK is to make a suit, almost like the Thing one, but more flexible with animatronic face and stuff, then just add it on the movie using CGI to make it look bigger, thats the answer to the Hulk. For example that monster Hellboy fights in the second movie, that was just a suit and look how it looked!
I must say, that this looks better than the CGI one in the movie, plus all this work was just wasted, what I think they should do with it though, is take this robot/animatronic thing, and make an attraction or a ride at a theme park with it, like another ride at Islands of Adventure or put it in the lobby while you are waiting in line waiting to ride the already existing one.
Wow was this seriously hidden for 8 years? It looks good, though the head looks kinda wierd, but I'm not sure if it would've worked. The problem with animatronics is that it is so constrained to its movements. Hulk, as we all know, has super-agility, so it would've really been hard to pull it off. But it would've been cool if they did what Jurassic Park did and used Half-animatronics, and half-CGI for the effects.
its amazing how thay didnt bother using somthing that must hav took a team of people months to do and it would hav been so much better than the cgi shit
@Superstarseven really!!?? that was for the second one!? daamn.....still a real shame it never got used. I hope it at least got re-purposed into a theme park somewhere so folks could admire it.
I think they should've gone with an actor in full body make up, like Hellboy, but made him look bigger with CG compositing. The transformation would be animatronic.
Do you ever keep the unused things such as this, the Superman suit, etc. and ever used it for other projects, past or future? Hate to think those things go to waste and never make it to celluloid.
BTW, Love the extensive Blade II documentary. One of my favorite special features on home video ever.
this reminds me of the animatronic goro for the first mortal kombat movie, if they could pull that off and have it still look fucking real as bones today then i dont see why hulk cant be done for real, but i can understand why they choose to go with cgi, but a little more work to this and less on the fucking computer than we can advance the technology to a degree to where its possible to do full body motion capturing to a robotic Hulk that reacts to our body movement!!

@mikecop87
Ang Lee's Hulk, iz more realistic than the Hulk in the Comics,
as any other ones u can see today.
OK, Ang Lee's Hulk looks way to human, but thats all.
My friend, you have to recognize how Lee's Hulk spitting the missiles back to the helicopter
and moves like these characterise the real character of the comics.
The Movie iz full of Scenes like this.
4 me, Ang Lee's Hulk iz the greatest!!!.
