Maybe you could go to Sephora and have a "How to" session with a makeup person. They are helpful without being condescending - and usually they give you lots of samples so you can try different products out before you buy.

I always use Q-tips for cosmetic erasures.

In the end, makeup is definitely a trial and error kind of learning experience!
