Material Issue...wow. Used to hang out on the mod scene in chicago. He died a month before I left for California. I talked to him about a month before he died...after not seeing him for years.

Also, he did not die from poisoning from a moped...it was his collection of Lambrettas and Vespas.

The day after my brother died 5/8/91 I found international pop overthrow in his cd player track 1 vallerie. I saw MI in NYC often. irving plaza and the marquis club where I spoke briefly with Jim Ellison about his antigua telecaster. His sisters were there that night. They had this cool tour bus with guitars painted all over it! So Sad, I would have loved hearing Jim Ellison in his 40's and 50's.

Thanks for the post. I haven't heard this song in awhile. I read you article. I know he committed suicide. There is never a reason to do that, but issues like a girl breaking up with him and losing his record deal seem so minor. That is such a shame he ended it over issues he would have eventually forget about or accepted with time. God bless.

If any guy tells you he never longed for a girl way out of his league (one that would not give him the time of day) he is full of crap. Material issue was the featured band on MTVS spring break right before grunge. This band would have been huge if they broke threw just a few years earlier. New wave died with glam rock and 80s pop. Ironic.

I remember Jim said during a radio interview that Valerie Loves Me was about a woman who lived in the upstairs aparment of his parents house when he was a kid. If you scratch the surface of most of his songs, they are about longing for but eventually failing to find love with the woman he's interested in in the song. Sadly, Jim - a guy with 1000 friends - was fundamentally alone. And he never was able to fully attain the one thing we all need - a loving relationship.

well done MaterialIssueFan a good guess by you and me...I believe he was in a love triangle, the third person in the video represents someone else: a boyfriend, husband, lover, etc. There is a song from MI named "what if I kill your boyfriend?" the lesson is simple: "If you kill yourself or someone else that will not help you in love" that is for sure. Regarding the interview i think he was confounding the truth to fans (perfectly understable after what will happen later).
