  • Putting these two songs (Heaven's Light and Hellfire) one after the other was genius. It really shows the contrast between the innocent and pure longing for Esmeralda in Quasimodo's heart, and the evil lust for her that Frollo feels. Even the names if the songs are perfectly juxtaposed; Quasi seeing Esmeralda as "light from heaven" and Frollo seeing her as "fire from hell". Simply beautiful.

  • The boner that burned down half of Paris.

  • Amazing job!!!!! Love love love it.

  • 23 months later. I think they're rushing Wreck-It Ralph too, but Wreck-It Ralph has no hope of reminding us of the old Disney...I mean, there's a MORTAL KOMBAT character in it. I would much prefer Psyduck.

  • Alan Mencken scored this? Seriously, how could they give a terrible song by Randy Newman an Oscar when Alan Mencken is the greatest composer for animation of all time, and Tangled's "Now I've Seen the Light" was scored by him and came out the same year?

  • @RedDiabl0PBCam20

I confess to almighty God, to blessed Mary ever Virgin, to blessed Michael the Archangel, to the holy apostles, and to all the saints and to you, father, that I have sinned exceedingly in thought, word, and deed, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault. Therefore, I beseech blessed Mary ever Virgin, blessed Michael the Archangel, the holy apostles, and all the saints, and you, father, to pray for me to the Lord our God. Amen. Lord have mercy!

  • The Confiteor is in Latin. It is a much shorter version...in fact I think I gave too much of it above. It is followed by a Greek exclamation of "Kyrie Eleison" meaning Lord have Mercy.

The parts of the confiteor which particularly show the juxtaposition are when the statement is made 3 fold that it is not Frollo's fault, the monks are singing "mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa" when means literally, "my fault."

  • So you have the humble and timeless plea for forgiveness by the monks and the arrogance of the "prayer" (if it can be called that) by Frollo. It is an absolutely amazing difference. Other parts match up well, but my favorite is the mea culpa combined with the denial of guilt of any kind.

If you want to hear something more of what the Monks would've been really singing/chanting, look up Compline (Night Prayer) Monastic (Latin with English translation) on Youtube. It is benedictine, but close.

  • @ck1n2 And "my most grievous fault" for "mea maxima culpa"

  • To RedDiablo, it's Latin. It's adapted from Gregorian chant, which would have still been commonly utilized at Catholic services during this time period.

  • That guy needs to get laid.

  • @St1gar yes nd fast he schould bang the gypssie

  • New Disney movies suck ass. Cars (1 & 2), the princess frog thing, etc. all suck royally. Toy Story, Lion King, Aladdin, Hercules, the Hunchback etc. are all totally raw! That was where it was at! What happened?

  • @masticatedaily1

I agree. I went to see Princess and the Frog, hoping it would be like the old Disney, but I ended up hating it.

  • @tinmanluver35 Princess and the Frog was never going to be likie the old Disney. CGI movies can be just as good as the old Disney, and that's what Tangled was. Just because it's cel animated does not mean you can go, "Oh, old Disney, you've returned!"

I have hopes that Frozen will be like the old Disney, though. And I have good reason to believe it will be. Except for the fact that it was a dead project for a long time and then suddenly BOOM, they announce that Frozen will be released

  • It took me 15 years to realize, but Hunchback got the best songs out of all the Disney canon.

  • Alan Menkin is such a genius for writing this and so many other Disney songs.

It's a song about a guy who has been brought up that lusting after someone is a sin but of course marriage is a covenant before God and is holy. He wants Esmerelda but if she won't be his he is determined to destroy her so he won't be tempted. He's obviously insulted that she could have such an effect on him and wants to show his power over her, he's calling on the Virgin Mary to help him in his mission.

  • Disney needs to start making movies like this again

  • "Hell" and "singalong" shouldn't be in the same sentence.

  • @Mirani2 Pff HAHAHAHA so true.

  • In your daily prayers, you should never ask for any selfish desires. When I speak to God, I ask only for forgiveness for my sins - and when I pray, I ask that He be merciful to those that suffer in our world. The sad, the weak, the hungry and poor - those that cannot help themselves.

I know it isn't much, but I think even one man's prayer counts for something.

  • a masterpiece in all sense, and honestly one of Disney's greatest... I still love this film do to how dark and serious the tone is, and how as an adult, you cannot help but appreciate it all, from the songs to the animation, to the story.

  • 4:13 He's talking about another type of "bone"

  • Translation-

    Quasimodo: "I want her love :) "

    Frollo: "I want her body >:D "

  • Yeah, he's ugly, but its a DISNEY movie- she should have chosen Quasi! Thumbs up if you agree.

  • I don't think I'd want my children singing along to this.....haha

  • I remember when this movie was new. It was so hyped that it was impossible not to love for a little kid. There are things I love and hate about it. I hate how in one sense it's so sad, but the beauty of the story and the music redeem it and make it a wonderful movie.

  • "Just having some trouble with the fireplace..."

Man this song gives me shivers even now. I'm not religious at all but I think Hunchback has some of the best music of any Disney movie.

  • Alan Menken, you are truly an artist and calling these six minutes a masterpiece is a complete understatement. I love how disturbing Frollo's character and this entire scene is...and although I can't listen to this without giggling for a split second at the fact that this is the same voice as Rugrats' Dr. Lipshitz, this song is BEYOND EPIC!

  • @InspectorJavert1820 WAIT!? What? He is????? That is awesome!

  • this scared the shit outa me when i was a kid, still freaks me out a bit..

  • "He made the Devil so much stronger than a maaaan!" I love that part... <3

  • @vampireyulow No it's not, Count Dooku's voice is much deeper (and more impressive xD)

  • is the guard the count dooku?

  • It`s awesome, but the brazilian version is even better

  • 4:28, the look all young boys made their first time getting caught watching a girl dance on screen...

  • So let me get things straight, Frollo is a priest that wants to kill a gypsy?????

  • @chlobosumm4 A judge.

  • @chlobosumm4 A really racist, Nietschean judge

  • Best Disney scene EVER!!

  • If anyone's interested, I wanted to put the bell sequence Quasi plays at the end of Heaven's Light as my ringtone so I managed to loop it convincingly (a harder job than I imagined) and I've posted it here on YT: watch?v=mEoQ7BXzPh0

  • "Choose me or dark pyre"

In the words of the Sultan: "But you're so old!"

  • Sorry I don't understand. Is Hellfire supposed to mean that if you like someone it's a sin?

  • @Vanitas61 No, it's more to do with sexual tension witch is prohibited I think, I don't know I'm drunk....

  • @Vanitas61 No....In his mind, Frollo thinks Gypsies are people from hell and he is having lustful thoughts about Esmeralda and thinking he is sinning.

  • @Vanitas61 Lust is a sin, Frollo feels lust. Rather than doing what a catholic is supposed to do (confess and try to contain that lust) he burns down Paris, attempts to wrongfully burn the girl as a witch because she wont marry him. He's not a priest in this version, he's a judge.

  • @panterist

I think Princess and the Frog was alright, but not the best. However, I agree with the masses that Dr. Facilier is a great villain worthy of the classics. His villain song is also pretty cool too, up there with Be Prepared, Lullaby, Poor Unfortunate Souls and of course, Hellfire.

  • frollo's part was pretty bad ass.

  • Frollo, meet your right hand.

    Honestly.

  • I am sorry I am not being hilarious here but I have to say it... these two songs are... quite possibly two of the best songs by disney ever. I'm talking top two. And, in saying that, I am still trying to acknowledge how rediculously good and catchy ALL of them are. They are all great songs.

  • I love the dichotomy in these two songs between Quasimodo's innocent love of Esmerelda and Frollo's lust. Very cleverly done.

  • ahhh this just made my day! hellfire singalong? Come on kids!!!! let's sing about wanting gypsies to burn in hell!!!!!!

  • i'm tanking latin in high school and it became my goal to know enough latin to translate the the choir in the backround. I'll be sure to get back to this when I have it fully translated.

  • @devopuzzlepro I think I've managed to get it basically right:

"I confess before you almighty God, the Blessed Mary, ever Virgin, blessed Michael the Archangel, the holy apostles, before all the saints ... and am open to you. For I have sinned exceedingly in thought word and deed by my fault, my fault, my greatest fault, Lord have mercy, Lord have mercy"

  • @d4t3cHw1z They say "et tibi pater" after the omibus sanctis which means "and to you, Father" essentially. I think they actually finish the confiteor before singing the kyries, but it is too intense to tell.

    Good job translating though.

  • goose fucking bumps like whoa

  • I had a little trouble with the fireplace.

  • @fhsfiddleboy09

That's what frollo says the morning after that epic musical number.

  • Frollo's got 99 problems. They're all the same bitch.

  • Righteous man....? *dies of shame*

  • @StarWarsObsession42 sad thing is, back in those times, his general attitude WAS considered to be consistent with a righteous man of God

  • @StarWarsObsession42 About as Righteous as the Pharisee praying in the temple in the Parable.

Pharisee "Oh God, look at how great I am! I don't really need you because I am so wonderful! Don't you think I am wonderful, so unlike that tax collector over there. He is pond scum."

Tax Collect: "Have mercy on me, a sinner."

Apparently we've had problems identifying righteous from unrighteous for a while...

  • Three people have never seen Heaven's Light.

  • i love this movie hunchback has always been my fav disney!!

  • 3 people have no childhood

  • Frollo is such a dramatic guy

  • If I was his neighbor...I would get PISSED!

  • THIS IS SOOOO EPIC!

  • "This burning desire..."

Well you see Frollo there's these little things called hormones and boners...

  • Now THAT, my children, is a true villain. He may not have magic on his side, but he is the most realistic villain in Disney history.

  • @yukikoyuma Well, Rourke from Atlantis was pretty realistic: the corrupt Army officer, in the project only for personal riches.

  • @Soundwave3591 DAMMIT I forgot about him!! D8< THANK YOU.

  • Y'know, for kids! :D

  • 4:27 just like my mom caught me masturbating myself.

  • Haha. HEY KIDS, LET'S SING ABOUT THE FIRES OF HELL!

    YAAY!

    Sorry, I just had to.

  • @CrystalJupiter you forgot about how a man is slowly losing his mind to lust.

  • @CrystalJupiter don't get good music like that now adays

  • @CrystalJupiter LMAO

  • That said, Tom Hulce is amazing!

  • Dude burned down Paris over a boner.

  • @fayeslover ...oh my god, you're right...

  • @fayeslover Esmerelda should be impressed with what he did to get her :P

  • @fayeslover hey, stranger things have happened. according to the myths, Troy was destroyed over a boner.

  • Guard: Sir, the Gypsy Girl has escaped.

Frollo: DON'T YOU EVER KNOCK! CAN'T YOU SEE I AM SINGING OUT OF LUST HERE!

Guard: Oooo-kay then. Just gonna back out slowly..

  • @fayeslover as if it were unheard of...

  • Darkest Disney Animated Feature. Religious and political themes, and the exploration of the maddened psyches of Frollo and (possibly) Quasimodo (it was suggested by the makers that the gargoyles might be hallucinations of Quasi's).

  • @MegaAstroFan18 Oh this is a very interesting fact, I didn't knew this!

But I think that they are not hallucinations, because at the end of the film they actually fight against the soldiers.

  • @oopaulorafael Are you sure it wasn't Quasimodo himself doing that?

  • @MegaAstroFan18 Yes I am sure. You didn't watched the film?

At a moment, two gargoyles throw a catapult against the soldiers. In another moment, a gargoyle throws a brick on a soldier's head.

    There are other examples.

  • @oopaulorafael Yes I watched the movie, I mean that those scenes are interperative.

  • @MegaAstroFan18 Why interpretative?

Who should throw the brick instead of the gargoyle?

  • @oopaulorafael There are other instances too:

    1) The ace card given to Quasimodo in "A Guy Like You" is shown to be real, since he rips it up when Esmeralda and Phoebus kiss (it shouldn't even exist, it's not historically accurate lol.)

    2) Laverne kept shooing away birds. Plus at the beginning a bird slept in a nest placed in Hugo's mouth, so it shows they're all at least real gargoyles.

  • @Aperrentis Indeed

  • 4:00 - This is the reason we have Global warming people, XD It's all Frollo's fault!

    Frollo: It's not my fault!

    (Mea Culpa)

    Frollo: I'm Not to blame!

    Yeah you are. cX

  • can someone translate the latin here please?

  • Confiteor Deo Omnipotenti (I confess to God almighty)

Beatae Mariae semper Virgini (To blessed Mary ever Virgin)

Beato Michaeli archangelo (To the blessed archangel Michael)

Sanctis apostolis omnibus sanctis (To the holy apostles, to all the saints)Et tibit Pater (And to you, Father)

Quia peccavi nimis (That I have sinned) Cogitatione (In thought)

Verbo et opere (In word and deed) Mea maxima culpa (Through my most griveous fault)

Mea culpa (Through my fault) Kyrie Eleison (Lord have mercy)

  • @Grannyslittlegirl thanks! :)

  • @Grannyslittlegirl

Thank you, I've been looking for a translation for a while.

  • A pyre is a stack of hay that bodies were thrown on top of and burned.

  • It's "Choose me or your pyre." not "Choose me or the fire."

  • The first time I watched this once I was older...I was a bit freaked out. O.O "How did I not find this scary when I was a child?"

  • Can someone buy Frollo a hooker so he can just chill out already?

  • So this is me, shamelessly promoting my own vid,

youtube search "Aladdin in the Court of Miracles!"

  • Latin the most badass language ever!

  • Although many of Menken's later works in Disney were not successful, I still love them.

  • -knock knock knock-

SHUT UP, you idiot! I'm singing evily!

  • Frollo's a perv. Doesn't he realize he's something like 40 years older than her?

Ick, disgusting just formed in my head...

  • I love how they use the perfect intervals from catholic hymns to modulate from the gentle F major key of Heaven's light to it's dorian. beautiful!...Yes, I know, I'm a geek, shut up.

  • @C3P0meetsData Yeah, I heard that, too. Geeks and people with ears that actually work, unite! (^-^)v

  • someone should do a version that shows what the french means in captions, there is some that seemed obvious like referring to virgin Mary, the arch angel Michael, the apostles and I'm guessing sanctis means sanctuary.

  • @IthraTheWarrior It's not French, it's Latin. But you got the basicness of it. It's all religious stuff.

  • @IthraTheWarrior It's not french, it's latin.

  • Imagine if they made this into a Sing-Along video for kids, they'd be singing along to "This burning desire is turning me to sin" and "Let her taste the fires of HELL" and "Be mine or you will burn!"

  • Can someone tell me what is his sin?

  • @guigui6915 he is murdering gypsy people in order to find her and gain control of her

  • @robbiefoxohyes Actually its just plain lust.

  • @guigui6915 LUST, mate!

  • classic 90s disney movies are so epic compared to todays disney movies.

  • do you think anyone in disney ever look at the comments on youtube? i mean, for most disney songs the highest rated comments are those that says "bring the old disney musicals back!" (not in this video though). i found princess and the frog fun but yet a bit disappointing. they didn't did wild cartoon things like aladdin or personal songs bit like hellfire or part of your world.

maybe soon they'll surprise us all disney classics fans, but for the meantime they really should hear our comments...

  • Why do the villains always have the best voices and the best songs? I'm not complaining, but it just always seems to happen that way.

  • i understand that frollo is evil and heartless but he rocks the fuck out of this song !!!

do you agree?? also do you realize that everytime he gets upset the same three strands of hair gets messed up ??

  • I would love for disney to make movies like this again.

I grew up seeing this Hercules and the old 90's one I'm 15 and I still look back to these songs.

  • Even if the book is darker, there's no denying that the film was dark as well, even if not as much.

  • Hellfire is sooooo epic!!!! >:D

  • I wish they had Frollo Valentine's cards: Be my valentine or you will BURN!!!!

  • @Coolgirl358 I would buy packs of those cards

  • @Coolgirl358 "Choose me...or the FIRE."

God, I'd punch any guy in the face if they gave me a card that said that, I don't CARE how much of a Disney fangirl I am. xD

  • @Coolgirl358 Ironic I read this on February 13th XD

  • @Coolgirl358 I... want to make those. xD

  • I remember one time when they showed this movie on Toon Disney on Halloween. I can understand why...

  • Oh god. Those creepy red-cloaked guys traumatized me when I was younger. It's just that faceless appearance! It's just creepy.

  • Hellfire still creeps me out, I love the passion in his voice, that is great acting :)

  • ^Quasimodo is a beautiful singer for such a burly fellow.

  • @ShawnFinatic13 @12tayres "Kyrie/Christe Eleison" means "God/Christ have mercy" in Greek. The vast majority of the traditional Catholic mass is in Latin, but this bit remains in Greek.

@RichieRichJ3 Catholics worship only the Triune God, but also "venerate" the Virgin Mary, saints, and angles as excellent Christian examples and mediators.

  • Does anyone know what Kyrie Eleison means?

  • @ShawnFinatic13 im pretty sure it means "the truth will set you free"

  • @12tayres Thx, but can anyone confirm? Because someone else told me it meant god have mercy.

  • @ShawnFinatic13 i did some research. it has multiple meanings. simply address god. google it

  • @ShawnFinatic13 It means God have mercy!!

  • @ShawnFinatic13

    It means lord have mercy.

    Kyrie Eleison

    Submitted by Visitor on November 21, 2007 - 10:35pm. * Greece * catholic * mass * religion

    How is it used?:

Correct spelling is "kyrie eleison", used in the Roman Catholic Mass.

    What does it mean?:

    Lord, have mercy

  • I'm pretty sure Hell is the better choice.

  • whos this maria lady? I thought they worship god. By maria do they mean the virgin mary?

  • @RichieRichJ3 Yes. in Latin Maria does mean the Virgin Mary. (I think.)

  • "it's not my fault if in god's plan he made the devil so much stronger than a man"

this line describes soo well the medieval christianity's spirit

notre-dame de paris (especially the book) has got the whole medieval society and mentality

    love that book

  • Did anyone else notice that the shadows rising kinda towards the end look like the ones in Pocahontas,? just wondering....

  • Is it just me or does Frollo seem to be a pedophile??

  • Anyway the latin lines together are about the firs half of a real pray

i know 'cause of i'm italian and in my church we still use to say the italian version, which actually is not that different in the form. Besides in italy if you choose the kind of school that gives you the chance to study at the university you've gotta make 5 years of latin!

    I'm pretty sure it's that!! :)

  • Comment removed

  • Guess she's gonna burn then.

  • @moehoggy88 Got that right my friend

  • Tom Hulce and Tony Jay are both so amazing. I love the lightness of Tom's voice and the deep, darkness of Tony's. I keep thinking its Jeremy Irons singing.

  • 'Heaven's light' makes me cry...so much :) I love the contrast between the softness of Quasimodo and the darkness of Frollo's voice :)

  • wow

i never realized that hellfire is a big scene of foreshadowing for frollo!

  • Quasimodo's voice is so beautiful and sad.

  • Mea Culpa is Latin for through my fault basically.

  • I don't think that is true, "culpa" means fault/sin and "mea" is the female possessive adjective (my) so it literally means "My fault/sin".

  • Tony Jay = crazy dramatic baritone. my gosh I would kill for a voice like that.

  • @raigekimaru

He was a great voice actor, it's a shame he was taken from us he would have done more amazing voices on shows like Avatar the last airbender.

  • Seriously though, what does "Mea culpa' mean anyway?

  • It means "My fault" in latin

  • yep, they say that line in a lot of movies. One that I can think of is V for Vendetta, and its a bishop that says it.

  • @AlexValve

I guess that makes sense, culpa like in culprit.

  • @ShadowDJ94 "For my fault". When they say "Mea Maxima culpa" they are saying "for my most grievous fault".

Not really what kids understand, but amazingly wicked nonetheless.

  • I loved this movie as a kid, and I still do. It's because of this and the Prince of Egypt that I got my strong views on slavery and on it's not what you look like, it's what inside that matters.

    God, that sounded cheesy. :)

  • Tom Hulce sings so well :)

  • Weird how Quasimodo's voice shifts from normal to soft singing like that. It doesn't matter though, I like this song combination.
