thank you Thomas for all those wonderful performances and the pleasure you brought to so many with your enchanting singing. I wish you a wonderful future, I will look and listen back with pleasure to your past
So sad to hear that he has decided to retire, but health comes first and if anyone feels they cannot perform as they would wish, it is time to stop. Thank goodness for all his wonderful recordings!
So Heartfelt, so Honest, so beautifully sung, I have his studio recording of Winterreise, which is the recording I can listen to, but this Live PERFORMANCE is SUBLIME, what a Master Singer!!!!!! Thank you for this post!!!!!!
@LizTheSinger I personally think Winterreise is best sung by baritones or bari-tenors like Fischer-Dieskau. The professional tenor versions I've heard mostly are boring. Even though the original score written is for tenor range, back in Schubert's time it was a baritone who sung most of his works in public and Schubert wrote his pieces for that baritone's voice. Hence most of Schubert's work actually sound the best sung by baritones.

Stellar! This is all music in general and Lied in particular is about: listening! Barenboim and Quasthoff are the consummate listeners and thus shape the song, make it breath and tell a story. Strong trip factor. Two masters at the height of their art. I had the pleasure to see and hear them perform Schöne Müllerin in Berliner Lindenoper - incredibly intense experience! Wonderful!
Einfach wunderbar.
This interpretation is just too precious. I'm a fan of Quasthoff, but this Flusse meanders too much for my taste. There's no rhythmic vitality or sense of desperation.

Well done! Sounds so weird in C minor, though.

And to think there actually are people saying a Baritone wasn't capable of singing "Winterreise"... Well, look at this.

what did he do with his arms?

@93shalalala93 He was born that way due to a damaging pharmaceutical his mom used being pregnant. There are many people handicapped because of that.

Herrlich! :)

@Atteusis
