look at chavez record 13 years undefeated, longest ever in boxing .most title defences 27 most title fights 37 equal kos in world title fights with joe louis,he would murder mayweather just like he did his dad twice ,duran was always my favourite ,but i think chavez was the best of the lot ,with maybe ray robinson .ali ,hagler ,frazier, sugar ray leonard ,whittaker, all above him in the ring top 50,thats a joke .it can only be blind patriotism as the ring is american
This was my first time watching Chavez and I knew I was watching a Hall-of-Famer that night. I actually think he was still a bit from his prime here as 135 was him at his peak. But he was great here as well.
Poor Ruben. This was back before it was known that you DO NOT under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES allow Julio Cesar Chavez to fight you with your back against the ropes or even his back against the ropes. The greatest 130lb ever. I miss old Chavez when he was young and hungry and totally commited to training. He was the best. Even when he was past it, for many years, he was still arguably the P4P best, and definately one of them. What a fighter.
@AntonioSantiago Yep, Castillo was a terrific fighter. He was one of the classiest boxers around. He met LaPorte when he was pretty well past it; but Juan was a very fine fighter himself.
@Kedbuka Oh yeah...people forget that the roster Juan faced was a who's who...Sanchez, Lockridge, Pedroza, mario Miranda, Castillo, De La Rosa, Gomez, McGuigan, Chavez, Suarez, Nelson, Tszyu, Padilla, Costello....Laporte's fight with Chavez was very close and he got robbed against Pedroza and SPECIALLY against Costello...
@AntonioSantiago LaPorte was absolutely ROBBED against Pedroza. I remember watching that fight--it was a ludicrous decision and an awful performance by the ref. His wins over Miranda and Castillo and violent knockout of Lockridge were his biggest. But maybe his best performance was against prime-Chavez. That's one of my favorite fights. Lots of great moves, subtle positioning, and terrific combination punching. I had Chavez winning it fairly but it was a close fight. LaPorte was a great fighter.
@Kedbuka I think I had Chavez by one or two...that day b4 the fight I had a poll among my friends, schoolmates, teachers, etc and I told my dad that people seemed to be blind because they favored Laporte, and dad told me: you have to remember, we ARE in Puerto Rico...LOL
Excellent upload. This is when Chavez was still annonmyous in the US. Chavez showed everything in this fight...gr8 defense, head movement, relentless pressure, accurate and power punching. He had it all and was simply a freak of nature...a prodigy. I'm convinced that there is nobody in the history of the 130 LB division who could've beaten Chavez on this night.
@ard56191 I loved Arguello and I do think he would've given Chavez a decent fight at 130, but I would have to make Chavez a pretty heavy favorite. Arguello was very technical, but didn't throw alot of punches and that tremendous KO power in his rt hand would've benefitted him very little against JC who had one of the greatest chins of all time. I would be more intrigued to see Chavez vs Duran at 135 (my ultimate dream fight) or Chavez vs Pryor at 140.

La verdad Chavez era un artista del boxeo, como Oscar de La Renta en el mundo de la moda o Monet en la pintura.

I am Puerto Rican and I will say Chavez was just one of the greatest by far.
Castillo was also great, he just ran into three hall of famers and Juan Laporte who was at his best night.

@joneslt Agreed, JC was the best 130 pound fighter I've ever seen.
ajspacegodzilla 1 year ago
@joneslt I think a fight between this Chavez and a prime Alexis Arguello at 130 would have been a hell of a fight.
