you all is retarded, the rally car weighs a little under (little under the stock weight), the rally car has had the entire shell seam welded and then a full cage is added front to rear, that car has no carbon fiber body panels on it, it is a group 4 car, minimal modifications except for safety and suspension. Try that in you normal hatchback and airbag or not you will most likely be a fatality, which you may already be because you would have to be brain dead to think a stock car is safer.

This rallycars weight should not be that far away as the standard car. so there you are wrong. And a rallycar is controled before every rally. so a rally car is safer. Do race cars have airbags??....no. a rally car is lighter then the stock counterparts. YEa they have saftey regulations but its not nearly as rigorous as the ones street cars have.... Normals cars do not have roll cages but they are designed so that the car will not crumple there anyways (achieving the same thing a roll cage does). anyways like i said earlier real cars have airbags and that crash looked brutal but it would have been much worse if he hit a tree and stopped immediatly.

Air bags would be completely useless in any car where the passengers are securely harnessed with 6 point belts to a high sided seat. The roll cage gives far more strength than a standard production car, it is important to get them as stiff as possible for performance reasons anyway. In a crash like this a road car would not protect its passengers, the roof would fold in and modern curtain airbags could only offer protection for the first roll (if at all).

Dude a honda has a chance at this crash. If you know physics you know that all the force of this crash was divided of the long set of flips. Its not a sudden crash. Rally cars are light weight. Yea they have saftey features but are not built under as many regulations as a street car.

Well, according to physics force=mass*acceleration. You're basing your argument in part that because a rally car is lighter, the average crash would be worse.

I see what you're saying-that an accident involving extreme deceleration would effect a rally car differently because of the lack of a crumple zone that absorbs the energy, but you guys aren't arguing over all crashes...as far as I can tell, it's this crash that matters here. If a street car is Xlbs heavier, relook at the equation.

In a crash you do not use the equation f=ma....its actually in impulse equation derived from f=ma.

Through this formula you can see that the longer the car has to stop the less impulse (change in momentum) there is on the person inside... This is where the damage is done. A car with more wieght is harder to stop so there will be less impulse on the driver.

Bottom line f=ma is not used here.

Thanks for the input. I really don't think what is being discussed can be cleanly expressed by either equation, unless you're considering the difference of forces between a standard seatbelt with airbags and the six-point (or whatever number it is) seatbelt/harness system.

I would really consider this to be a good physics problem, but requiring lots of data from previous crashes.

The harness prevents you from remaining in motion. You stop at the speed of the car.

In the case of a seatbelt and airbag yes you fly forward but you decelerate over a longer distance so the force exerted on you is divided by the time it takes to stop. This is safer because you are not hit with all of the force at once.

Bwahahaha, airbags in a rally car, have you ever seen the belt of a rally car? .... with such belts airbags are useless. And lighter doesn't always meen more fragile. for example carbonfiber (also used in sportscars)

wen did i ever say their were airbags in rally cars? Carbon fiber is weaker then metal. Carbon fiber although very ridgid for what it is, is not capable of withstanding the forces that metal is. Carbon fiber and fiber glass are more fragile and yes they are used in sports cars which dont have great crash ratings when compared to other street cars.

carbon fibre is stronger than metal.. it absorbs a lot more energy in an impact than steel u fool.. cf is probably the ultimate material make vehicles from.. light weight.. stong.. and very efficient at absorbing energy
