I'm splitting hairs here, but NSNA wasn't an authentic canon Bond film but rather a rogue remake of Thunderball.

It was and wasn't a remake. Ian Flemming wrote Thunderball without giving credit to Kevin McClory who helped him write the original story which was supposed to be a film. McClory sued Flemming for essentially stealing the story and giving no one else credit for it. McClory was given rights to the story and was able to remake it except he did it his way. Bond was older and inactive, there was a new M who disliked and discontinued the double O's, and Bond talked about retiring at the end.
