i feel so honored to be taking class from julane stites...the one in the middle. she is such an amazing individual. still the same person from the video, even in her 60s! my senior class this year learned this dance and performed it for her for a christmas gift. she laughed so hard and jumped up and did it with us! it was perfect!
@animeslave20 I don't think she kicked her...we can't see, but it looks staged. Notice on the woman and the man who was holding her react. Everyone else acts like it doesn't happen. They are all supposed to be drunk anyway.
awesome!!!!! anyone see the movie camp? they do a great tribute to this with their own little mix and it's really good. love the live band here, awesome
@bertiejr I have and I like that one so much better she and the other 2 girls brought some more energy to it that has disappeared. I thought maybe Fosse had choreographed this but it wasn't seems very Fosse like. i love how dumb the song is though :)
I don't it reminiscent of 'Chicago' at all. I do find it more like 'Sweet Charity' than anything else. Great number, it is. If I only knew who was in original cast..so will go look. Indeed, it is nice to see something just silly, as one says, pre AIDS, 9/11. etc..but every generation has their silly and their serious. When this was playing, so was 'Hair', hardly silly. Post 9/11 we had 'Wicked'....good fun! AIDS is so integrated in theatre as theatre has lost so many people, actors-stage hands.
OMG. Flipping fantastic. Ten times more entertaining than any theatrical drek that emerges today. Burt Bacharach is a genius. Those girls be gittin' DAY-OWN, no?
It's actually very true to the original choreography, but however it isn't move for move exactly the same... I don't think they can completely jack someone's choreography like that.
@mikeymob1 - just saw the revival last night... it's fabulous - sean and kristen have great chemistry and the audience was rapturous... a really fun evening - hope it runs a long time... I want to see it again!!!
Is the woman in the middle, the star of this scene, the same actress who danced in the movie version of "Sweet Charity" who did the lead in the nightclub dance scene which included "The Frug"?
Fantastic routine not helped by the camera work and intrusive editing. How about showing the dancers' feet? And when they go into the figure eight a stationary wide shot showing the tight pattern they create would be nicer to see than a series of medium close-ups that make it look like a free-for-all.
That's Paul Reed as the executive standing on the platform at the beginning...a Broadway veteran. he was best known for plyaing "Captain Block" on "CAR 54, WHERE ARE YOU?".
This is the Turkey Lurkey Time number from Promises, Promises. A Broadway musical from 1968. This particular performance is one that the cast did on the Ed Sullivan Show ( a popular musical variety TV show.)
Thanks, But I totally should of asked ***When*** is this from? Because I recognize Baayork Lee, but its not Donna McKechnie beside her (BTW, today is Donna's Birthday...HB!)
@646guy Yes, it looks like the woman behind's fault. If you watch, she seems to be constantly trying to stay in the shot, where the dancers on the other side are well back, where they should be.
Julane Stites rocks! I can remember how she got that funky groove on like it was yesterday. Interesting how the same choreography works with different people. McKechnie had that great, graceful extension, and Stites has an awesome rocking feel, especially at the end. Wow!
I have this clip but it's bad quality and has the time running underneath. How I wish they would release all the Sullivan stuff, there is so much great material! Where ever did you get this clean version?
Donna McKechnie originated the role in the original Broadway cast. This clip from 1970 features her replacement, a brunette Lada Edmund. A few years earlier, Donna, (a blonde) Lada and Michael Bennett were all dancers on the NBC TV dance/variety show HULLABALOO.
And the black woman in the purple dress playing Miss Polansky (now that's some colorblind casting for you) is Barbara Alston, another Hullabaloo alum. Since Michael Bennett was the choreographer for Promises, Promises, I guess it made sense that he would hire his friends from his Hullabaloo days to perform in this show.
This was the Ed Sullivan show in 70 when "Promises Promises" wasn't doing very well. Ed was very supportive of Bway and would try to put the shows on that were either popular or who needed the help. In this case, it was an attempt to drum up interest in the show and up their ticket sales.
Oh wow, the middle dancer is a dance teacher at my school. She was 16 at the time this show was going on and she's 58 now.

if they just up the tempo a little bit more, this would've been perfect. Still, great choreography. :]
