If you've seen footage from both sides (This video is taken from the Shonan Maru II), then you can see that the Shonan II did infact, turn abruptly, infront of the Ady Gil.  Although these details are pointless, as no blame was put on either side.

I'm not saying the Shonan caught them by surprise, I'm just saying that the Shonan shouldn't have been steering towards the Ady in the first place and that this is mainly the Shonan's fault. If you watched the Whale Wars videos, doubtful, then you can see that the Ady stopped long before the Shonan started moving in their direction. They were most likely just expecting to be hit by water cannons, not accidentally (or intentionally) rammed

I've replayed this video many times and noticed the Ady Gil having no wake. That is, until the Shonan Maru ll collided with it and dragged it partially under and to the side, creating a wake behind the jet boat. The least the whalers could have done is stop the engine and turn full to port, thus attempting to avoid a collision. But because they did not attempt to avoid this collision, they destroyed an expensive vessel that was not only used for pro-ecology purposes but for pleasure and speed.
