Seriously, this was my favourite track from the game. Has a certain swagger to it, but also an in-your-face intensity. You can tell the horns are synth though, since real F-horns don't go quite that high. Still good on the composers. They really went nuts with this one, and I mean that in a good way. :-)
@Karmoon7 If you can find a trumpet that would hit the same range as a piccolo while having the same timbre and volume of a brass instrument (or have the player of a regular trumpet so good that he can make those notes on a regular trumpet), you'd have to go with that. Otherwise, you'd have to take the lead part from 0:37-1:02 down an octave. Highest notes I've heard on an F-horn are still seven semitones too low to hit that high C at 0:54.
@AgentDC76 acctually i think there some other instrument that make the very highest notes. If you listen really carefully you can hear that the trumpet plays a lower note and some other instrument ( probably a flute or a piccolo) plays the higher notes.
@Tobbe999999999999999 I'd disagree, simply because of how MIDI and computer music works. It just wouldn't be prudent to have the instrument of a MIDI sequence changing depending on the pitch range, because all that extra information makes the file larger. Now I know the super-high notes in the background (like right at the beginning) are played by other instruments (likely synth strings) but the actual lead is pure synth brass. It probably sounds like a flute because it is so high in pitch.
It helps if you actually regard it as a film score done by Horner or Williams or something.
The more i listen to and analyse the music in this game now that i'm not a kid anymore, the more that I find. The way the music calms down just as you're trying to negotiate that huge crawler on the wall, then it heats up as you start fighting it...it's just perfect.
@Karmoon7 I'm going to spam one of my comments here, from another vid with this music:
"I can still hear the sound of that flying mid-boss crashing onto the walls. In my mind, too
That's how epic this music is. It was pure coincidence that when the music hit that point, the ardous climb truly began in earnest. That was truly an "Oh, sh..." moment."
"That point" was 01:40 in this vid. Now you know how much this music affected me.
i love when it kicks in at :37 when typically you're trying to press forward being swarmed by endless amounts of flying bugs that try to carry you off screen, that was really frantic, and i first played this game when i was 5, absolutely shitting my pants every step of the way.
That's what I thought as well. Neo City is where Bill and Lance (or if you're going by the retarded American canon, "Jimbo" and "Sully") first dropped in at ground zero.
love this level although im from australia so ive got the alien rebels version with the main 2 characters as cyborgs instead of people but the rest is the same as contra so just as cool!!! ^_^
I loved making it to this stage on 2 players.

@AgentDC76
Hi.
From your writing experience, if this WAS played with real instruments, what would you recommend for the horns if real ones don't go that high?
I've been mulling it over, but I think it kinda has to be brass to get the same impact and military feel.
Cheers.

I like the bell-like dingling effect early on. I love hearing stuff like that in dark games like this. Interesting contrast.

Neo Kobe? Is it a reference to SNATCHER? if it is that's pretty cool, cause SNATCHER did a reference to contra as well XD

@shanethefox It definitely could be, mate; the bosses of the stage are clearly all heavily based on the design of the Snatchers.

Contra was one of the best things about the 'commando' trend from the 1980s. Excellent level design for the cyber steel factory.
femstarlight 2 years ago
Indeed it was. It, despite its egregious campy presentation, took the whole machismo motif and made something wickedly cool out of it.
Gotta hand it to the Japanese; they had, and probably always will have us beat in creativity and originality.
