hi everyone... the oiler on my chainsaw is not working, i have cleaned out the hole with no luck, is there anyway to use the saw with some kind of external oiler.. all advice is welcome.. many thanks.
I own a sawmill so I do quite a bit of log sawing and tree felling. I don't own a chain file. I do all my sharpening on the bench with a nice chain grinder. Just carry extra chains with you. If your chain is cutting crooked then it may be that one side has less tooth left than the other. You can eyeball them or put a caliper on them. You gotta keep the teeth the same size. That's another good reason to use the bench grinder -- consistency. Nice vid.
If your saw is cutting crooked, it is usually due to having run the chain too loose and the chain has caused the bar to no longer be flat along the chain channel It can be resolved by taking a flat file and leveling the rails on the chain channel until they are perfectly flat and perpendicular to the bar (90 degrees).
@Wildmanhunter1 That is usually a result of having the teeth on one side of the chain being ground differently than the other. Get behind the saw, sharpen tooth by tooth, alternating hands on the file. If you see a tooth that looks longer than the average, file it down. You want all your teeth the same length.
I like these little file guides. They are cheap, don't slow you down while sharpening, and most importantly control the depth of your file while sharpening the tooth. This is a point not touched on by most of the sharpening videos. Depth is almost as important as angle. If you're not a pro cutter this is a handy tool to have. Good video.
Someone always has some kind of shit to talk.I would let this guy sharpin my saw anyday.Does he have alot of tools.Yes but when your unkept crap is broke and your driven back to town this guy will still be putin wood on the ground.
Not a bad video, health and safety is always a must when using these. Most people should be treated as if they have no common sense to be on the safe side and make sure the rules are drummed into them. The chainsaw in this video looks old but well maintained, just what a good tool should look like! I find it very amusing when the people who knock it, can't spell correctly. That scares me, because if they didn't learn basic english, they sure as hell are not going to remember all the health and safety
Respond to this video... knocking this video would be a waste of time BUT this guy would be mocked relentlessly if he were to show up on the hill with all this crap he's got.. all you need is a bar wrench, a round file, a flat file. and if you're a girly man.. a handle on the file..
@missnishnash .. I started running saws at 16 back in 1979.. bucked cedar blocks for a couple of years, then got into falling.. I fell timber on the coast of BC until 2003.. I've done clear cut falling, selective falling, right of way falling, and corridor falling.. the last few years of my career I was bullbucker for a crew of 8..
how many trees have I fallen in 22 years? not sure but it's in the tens of thousands..
i know guy very well and what he doesnt know about arb isnt worth knowing! i went to plumpton unfortunatly!! (didnt stay long) the saws are pink because they belive it will put the students off steeling them!! these saws are abused by the students mustly by digging!! i would recomend if you are wanting to learn how to sharpen a chain ask a woodsman or arborist much better than trying to learn of the web!
The little tooth in front of the cutting teeth Oceansdoor
Do not exceed 1mm of depth on saws up to 50cc, 1.5 on larger saws otherwise they'll accelerate wear and in extreme cases become unmanageable and LETHAL!!!
you were kind of vague about the depth chain sharpening portion of the video. I'm confused....are you filing off the top of each tooth with a flat file or that little tooth in front of each cutting tooth?
shouldnt you be grinding towards the cutting edge to avoid burring?

Sound like a typical UK instructor. Lots of irrelevant padding out.

Never been a fan of all this over the top safety bollocks. I chainsaw in dark with my cock and biceps out. Never had any trouble.

Not very detailed or precise.
Also, that chain looks far too tight on the bar.
