I wonder what it's like from a terrorists perspective to hear a low flying helicopter come in, hearing a loud clunk above the rafters, followed by several more smaller clunks, and then suddenly be confronted by shattering doors/windows, loud bangs, and flickers of light
It takes BALLS to ride on the LB , I'm no Pussy & I Didn't mind the CH-46 or 53(except the leaking hydraulic fluid finding you on every time you got on it) Even spy rigging I was cool. But riding outside the fucking bird from takeoff to landing is not for me. Luckily I didn't Rate that shit =) Be safe Guys.
As far as I know, a pilot could go crazy in the cockpit until their the final approach onto a target, by then soldiers on board unclip prior to landing.
The pilots will fly the L-Bird as close to the groud as the can. There have been times when the bird is only ten feet off the ground. We try to be fast getting off the L-Bird because the thing isn't armored. I personally unclip from the safety rope just before the thing lands. some guys wait some dont.
AH-6 is an attack helicopter, typically armed with 2 miniguns and 2 rocket pods. The MH-6 is a troop transport, it has benches ("pods") instead of armament.
actually, it's safer to fly in a heli like the little bird than a huge one like let's say the blackhawk. little birds are extremely fast and manouvrable, and thus really hard to hit.
High speed, low drag!

Quick little helo

i assume the little bird is used for "tricky" areas?

Yes, it's small and nimble and can go where others can't. It's used a lot for special operations.
It also can pack a mean punch when needed! Great helo.

How fast you unclip depends on how much ground fire you are taking . You want to get away from the flying fuel tank as fast as possible ..

You don't unclip until you land. You prepare to unclip, but don't actually do it..

just a safety clip attached to our rigger belts. its got a quick release used right before getting off.

How much maneuvering can the helo do with the guys on, do they have quick release harness?

I think they're only available to the military, but you can buy a MD500 which is very similar
