  • A person who not like this kind of music is a person without feelings and soul.

  • absolutely beautiful----I know I will listen again and again....Thank you for posting

  • this is the saddest piece of music i ever heard. it is soooo beautiful..

  • The hours upon hours of practice. You could devote your life to this work.I think it is one of the most important pieces of music of the twentieth century.when you listen you realise that there is hope for the human race. The Soviet Union was supposed to be our enemy but this music comes from the soul of one of its genius citizens.

  • it needs more power in a lot of places. Her sound is too light all the time.

  • @cellobuddy i agree with you to an extent, but judging from the rest of the orchestra, the conductor chose to play it like that.

  • @cellobuddy yea I find that's the one thing about Hahn I don't like. She doesn't put enough power into certain passages that demand it, but overall she is quite brilliant.

  • @Hamgammy i would have to disagree with you on the power comment. If you look at the sheet music, it dosent ask for too much powere, and there is a reason. Shostakovich wanted a mournfull, eerie, almost apocalyptic tune. If you actually try to play certain passages with more power, it takes away the meaning of the tune.

  • @aferrante26 I meant in general, not this performance.

  • @Hamgammy ah. that, i would agree with. however, Hahn seems to amplify all of Shostakovitch's syle, creating a sound that will send tingles down your spine if you listen to movement II, in part 3.

  • Appreciate your qualms. Yes, it was worth it. I wish YouTube were more open-minded and allowed such an opus to pass unfragmented.

  • She will go down as one of the great musicians of our time.

  • i <3333 hilary hahn!!!

  • great Mariss Jansons!!!

  • not bad...but, in my opinion, when one plays Shostakovich you should use less vibrato and at times NONE at all. It just doesn't have the same emotional effect with lots of vibrato like in this case..

  • @enma15ai You're wrong.

  • @principalbass No, I'm not. You are.

  • Thank you so much for uploading!

  • Shostakovich wrote music with such depth of feeling, it's hard to pinpoint the emotions, but they are there... yearning.

  • why don't you post your version? then let's see who's the real violinist!

  • Do not take online lessons as they will not help you whatsoever. Your best bet is to find a real teacher.

  • online lessons do help if accompanied by real ones

  • @aaron1640 Go move to Venezuela and get real music instruction. They are producing the best musicians in the world.

  • @alejoeisabel si claro y matamos la tradicion de un plumazo porque asi lo dicta huguito chavez, venga ya!

  • Can someone pelase tell me the name of this song? i just watched this on some tv channel but they didn't say the name...

  • This is the Violin Concerto of Dmitri Shostakovich.

  • Violin Concerto no1 op99 (or called 77 sometimes)

  • thanks :)

  • Absolutelly superlative music, violinist, and execution so; everythink!!

  • The best version of Schostakovich available in modern times!

You will never hear a better version as long as you live!

  • I'm afraid I can't really agree with maxhansendk. I find this interpretaition too lifeless. Shosty is quite languid in his expositions; long long melodic lines, which needs PASSION pumped into them even if controlled. Hilary's is too "clean", with Saxon-Germanic reserve. Compare this with Oistrakh's: there's "Slavic" passion there even from the first few notes.

  • Well, I don't know Hilary's achievements elsewhere. Here, we are talking about Eastern music. If you forget madness, if you forget the extremism of slavic life, if you make of it a music of salon, well, it may sounds nice, but you didn't catch it. Lidia Mordkvich with Neeme Jäärvi as conducer are the best here. Hilary is not wild enough. She doesn't have the GPU on her trail. She is not craving for survival. Shotstakovich's music here is directly on the emotional level, since the 1rst note.

  • That is just *one* way of playing this. It doesn't *have* to be played like you have the "GPU on [your] trail". Music is abstract, not representative, even if particular events may have inspired it. Jansons, who grew up in Leningrad should know and he certainly wouldn't put up with Hahn if she wasn't a consummate musician.

  • Of course, there is none compulsory interpretation. And people may appreciate Hilary's version more than Mordkvych's one if, for example, they don't like very much the excessive emotional intensity of the second interpretation. I have felt that Hilary was starting to play the concerto and this was lasting a little bit too long for me. Probably is it due to the fact that I am a supporter of Mordkvych and Jäärvi. Excuse my partialty.

  • BTW, WTF is "the extremism of slavic [sic] life supposed to be"? I'm Slavic and I don't know what that is. Did you just pull that out of your arse because you thought it would make you sound smart?

  • No, I don't try to sound smart. I listened to Hilary's interpretation coming home from a period in Kyiv where I am leading a search since several years. My formula "extremism of slavic life" is not good. It was difficult to say it in just few characters. The relationships between beings are sharper and more intense, less filtered than in the West. And, saying this, I don't think that I am exagerating.

  • I agree with the interpretation of shosty, but I find the performance to be very musical. Plus she is very young...check out her performance of the sibelius concerto

  • Yes I shall, I love Sibelius since 25 years. I think that, indeed, she is young and the years will teach her lots of things. Glenn Gould young is not glenn Gould mature. And the same for many other great interpreters.

  • Sick!! Hahn is as good as they come!!

    cyphicle is an unhappy person...

  • Insightful. Jo, det er min dansk mørk side der taler, tak Max. ;))

  • Long live our noble Queen!

  • Very good.

Obviously, Oistrakh plays this better, but he's one of a very select few. (I also like Nathan Milstein's Shostakovich.) Hahn is, in my mind, one of the top three violinists alive today, with Shaham and Perlman.

  • Not to say hahn is bad, which she isnt she is unbelievebly good, id out her in top 10 because the top tree today are perlman, vengrov, and Bell. All time in my opinion is Elman.

  • I have listened to Hilary Hahn, and instead of people just listening to her great talent, they talk about the dress not being right ,she moves to much, etc.

For cripe sake listen to her with your eyes closed if you have to but shut up about the way she dresses or moves!!

She is a very gifted young lady ,that has all the right things going for her ,and I wish her nothing but the best in this life!!!

  • cant hear it , but im sure its nice.

  • She plays so well I am crying of joy! I love your playing Hilary.

  • Hilary! If I cold get an autograph or a kiss my life would be fullfilled!

Of course I am joking! But you are the best violin player on earth coming into this world after 1950...

That I think with certainty! But the important thing is that you move people with your music! I actually think your Shostakovich is the best there is! (for me at least ;-)

  • Who is the orchestra?

  • I think that is the Berlin Philarmonic Orchestra, but I'm not sure. The conductor is Mariss Jansons.

  • Yes, is The Berliner Philarmoniker

  • Hilary Hahn is second to none!!

    Absolutely beatiful!

  • I have always loved the Viktoria Mullova recording most of all, but this is easily her match. She wonderful playing. Thanks for posting.

  • Hearing this msic makes me so glad I spent all the time I have getting my violin skills to grade 8 level.

I hope one day I may be as good as her.

  • absolutely wonderful!! beautiful sound, exquisite bow-arm and great attention to the long line. Listening to Ms. Hahn play this piece is pure pleasure....she reminds me of why I started to play music in the first place.

  • supeeeer !!!

  • sounds really good, wonder what's up with the moving. looks a little weird.

  • que belleza por dios!!!me encanto...ojala algun dia yo pueda tocar el violin asi...pero me falta tannnnnto....Felicitaciones por el video...Angie

  • Beautiful. I also like her dress. :)

  • This piece was on the second CD I ever bought(back in 1991). I once played it really loudly in my Bowdoin College dorm room. Eventually a cute music major showed up at my door, saying that he just had to see what kind of person would blast Shostakovich.

  • haha

  • that's awesome :D

  • Thanks for the video!!

that was a bad place to end. :(

  • Elle est vraiment très bien, cette petite !

  • A worthy alternative to the classic Oistrakh recording.

Plus, she's hot in that black gown.

  • You can "bed" all you want. Tell me again who is clueless.

  • Why don't you "BED" and sleep???? Please, post yourself playing! Grow, man...boy!!

  • Comment removed

  • @nibelungensohn She's hot anyway, but especially in that gown, yes I do agree.

  • I think her sound is one of the best

    that I hear!! Powerfull!Beautifull!

  • Her sound is incredible ...

  • please hilary come to chile south america!!

  • Check out Ms. Hahn playing the Sibelius. I love that concerto, and she does it justice.

  • It's a very good recording. I try not to force any of my ideas or opinions on others when commenting so, in that light, in my opinion I would always want to hear or study one of Hahn's recordings, in one case maybe just to study it because it is a really solid recording with all of the right stuff to absorb and try to incorporate into one's own playing, and another for just pure enjoyment.

  • I totally meant to click the thumbs up!!! I'm so sorry!!!!

  • But it's very cool to see how she brings something completely different to it. She's not agressive and intense like Oistrakh, she's quiet and cool-headed. Also, does anyone know the CD that Lydia Mordkovitch did with the RSNO under Neeme Jarvi? That's a good compromise between the two interpretations of this piece.

  • I agree that Oistrakh's version is just much better.

  • kogan's is great too

  • oooh, they got her name wrong. or is it spelled that way in another language?

  • Wonderful!!!---who are the conductor and orchestra?

  • Mariss Jansons is the conductor. I don't know the orchestra

  • The orchestra is the berliner philharmoniker

  • Mariss Janssons, Berlin Phil, baby

  • Outstanding quality...pure art. Bravo!

  • This piece is absolutely beautiful. It's dark, played by a wanderful violinist and orchestra. I'm a fan of this girl!

  • i love her interpretation of beethoven's violin concerto...from what i've heard of her playing, she never overdoes anything. its amazing how developed her sound was from such a young age...she definitely puts my playing to shame lol

  • you don't understand shostakovich then.

  • Although I don't play violin :( I saw a performance and this and it was WONDERFUL. This concerto is pure genious

  • this concerto is.....dark. isn't it?

  • ...wow... what else is there to say that hasnt been said? wow has been said too, i guess. still. im speechless.

  • i try to imagine what he went through when i hear this

  • A great tragic violin concerto played by a wonderful intepreter . God bless DDS & thanks for uploading oxy. :)

  • WOW! thank you for this performance! it was up on youtube a while ago, and someone took it down.

    Yay! thank you!

now for the critique: I love Hilary, but the "dark" and "sorrow pain" that is often associated with the shostakovich isn't expressed in this performance. In my opinion, Hilary plays this concerto like the Mendelssohn concerto...same expression and style. (although her album version of shosty is absolutely wonderful)

  • Absolutely agree with you!

You have to well understand the word "WAR" "dead" for play this wonderful concert!

It's better Oistrakh interpretetion specially the CADENZA in video live version on youtube, really Oistrakh trascend the violin!

  • I think it was very clean and beautiful. I like all the other videos of Hilary Hahn sooo much...I just can't stop listening to her!!! <:)

  • Thanks for your comments, they're much appreciated! It's what motivates me to upload stuff! I also think the cadenza is the highlight. It amazes me how the orchestra know exactly when to come in afterwards!

  • omg omg omg omg omg omg omg omg omg omg omg omg omg!!! tell me this is a dream!!!!!! i love this concerto!! one time, i listened to it out of order by mistake, and im like, omg..this is soo lame. now that i listened to it in order, i LOVE IT! the cadenza is my favorite! its like the climax of the whole piece.

  • thanks

  • amazing performance!touching.
