  • Compiz + Xfce... HOW THE FUCK IS THAT POSSIBLE?!?!?! D: Last I checked, there was no Xfce compatibility plugin for Compiz...

  • My MX 400 is 64 MB :/

  • Thumbs up if you have a p3 and use it sometimes.

  • @BSUMusic i had one 3 years ago :D then i got an i7

  • Weird I'm trying to run it on a 2.0 GHz AMD processor with 384 MB of ram but it's way slower than this. I expected greater performance than Windows XP.

  • 1:22 that looks like mac's spaces :P

  • @crashbandicoot4everr i believe workspaces were actually started by linux

  • an 800 megahz p3 is too fast to call slow it would run xp just fine. Impress me show this stuff on a 486

  • P-III 800? GeForce 2/400? That'd actually be a perfectly decent XP or even Vista machine if you put just £5-10 of ebay RAM into it (aka 1Gb... or 768mb if that's all it'll take). 128mb chips are just about worthless outside of a museum these days. What's the HDD?

Xubuntu will load ok on 128 but good luck running ever so many programs in that much memory :-/

Half gig or more is dirt cheap these days... we simply throw out (well ok, recycle) 256mb chips at my workplace.

  • I have a similar config, 700MHz, 512 RAM, geforce mx2. The problem is Firefox just dies on it. KDE dies on it. It can't even play the new hi-res movies. Now it's just an Apache and git server and an all around file server.

  • that looks good. i'm just downloading xubuntu for an old machine too.

  • I use Debian Squeeze with XFCE. It rules!!!

  • foo fighters suck......all of their songs sound the same...

  • I have Xubuntu 11.04 runing on a Dell Latitude C610 from 11 years ago haha. The laptop has an ATI Mobility Radeon card with 16 MB of DDR RAM, a 1.2GHz processor and 512 MB of SDRAM. I can't get compiz to enable. Any ideas?

  • @Osiriss19

Sadly enough you will have nothing but issues with anything ati and linux related.

  • thts way i use ubuntu and xubuntu unless the full with bugs windows xp

  • Awesome! Which version of Xubuntu is this?

  • @WinAndLinuxTutorials it's written in the video. and in the description.

  • windows vista was a project.windows 7 is the finished version.i personally like all the old stuff.im a network addict.

  • I will admit, as a Windows user, the only reason I use Windows is for games.

If it wasn't for that, well screw off Micro$oft.

  • @MrMakeman double booting?

  • @ksnaddyk

I tried that, I need as much space as I can for games. Also Ubuntu is using more resources than XP for some reason...

  • @MrMakeman really strange..

  • i have a P 3, 950 MHz, but i think it hasnt got video card... so... its not too good, puppy linux and xubuntu were running, sometimes lagging, but compiz would be too much for it

  • did you try the new ubuntu there? ubuntu 10.04 or ubuntu 10.10, or the upcoming 11.04? do you think can run as well as gutsy? you should change the title, better than vista and win 7, xD

  • sabeeee

  • @IntelgratedShiznit He is trying to demonstrate how fast his computer is with Pentium III vs Pentium 4 users.

  • @jjovereats eehh no, he's trying to show how awesome Linux is!

  • @chotsmagic While showing that Netburst kills people's wages by being slow.

  • Pentium III? That's so better than NetBurst Celeron!!!

  • Aunque nisiquiera sabes usar el efecto de ventanas gelatinosas, la mueves como un idiota, necesitas mober la ventana CON FUERZA!!!!

  • Lo que te permite hacer eso es la geforce 2

  • @maurojas1234 Umm, no. Try it with a 16MB video card, you'll obtain the same results.

  • When my microsoft software gets old and corrupt and doesn't run right and I try to fix it by copying files from another system or installing a hard disk from another system, I have to feel like a criminal pirate just to fix the system I paid for!

With Linux everything is legal and free.

  • donde lo descargo? si no tienes muchos programas instalados entonces yo quiero ese s.o. :D

  • Simply beautiful! Another computer's life saved by linux! :)

  • Why is it that I don't get my title bars when I'm in a high resolution with compiz running? Any fixes?

  • @ThePSIMaster Did you enable "Window Decorations" in CompizConfig Settings Manager?

  • @arinlares Yes, but now I'm having a bigger issue, xgl is installed but it isn't recognized by Xubuntu 8.04, compiz recognized the driver for my onboard SIS graphics, but XGL isn't enabled, how do I enable it?

  • @arinlares New issue, I deleted the files from the /usr/bin/ that regards to compiz, I noticed that Synaptic doesn't entirely delete every scrap of compiz that's on the computer, so I figured I delete them on my own using the sudo rm -file- command. Now compiz isn't even recognized, does this mean I have to reinstall the whole OS all over again? Man, all of these driver issues and xgl are a pain but it's so worth it for compiz!

  • Tears of joy are streaming down my face.

  • great vid dude!

I have a pc with almost the same features than yours!

    I'll give it life again!

    Bye man!

  • this actually makes me kind of furious at Microsoft for needlessly bloating their new operating systems just so hardware manufacturers can make a couple bucks.

  • a couple ???

  • dude i have a computer with a intel celeron at 333 megahertz.

  • Wow P800. Amazing. How come MS isn't able to do anything near as efficient? You need Gigs to run Wins and it still runs slow even on 3ghz machine.

  • Linux is for free, but I can imagine that the Hard Disks from linux users are full of mp3 and movies from PirateBay...

But I don't deny the quality of this OS :)

  • the database for the packages on gutsy gibbon have gone i cant get any programs for my computer please help

  • its not very old, its just old... very old is like 20 years old with 12mhz processor, 1mb ram ect...

  • @pufixas i used to have a 80's computer with a 2 megahertz processor and 252 kb ram. 32 megabyte hard drive.

  • @wheely132

    oh, yeah ;)

  • Meu PC de 4 GB e 128 MB de video não roda. É chipset da SiS.

  • Haw haw mine has 256 and my geforce mx 400 has 64 mb of ram

YA DUDE I CAN RUN CRYSIS UN FULL

    Luls

  • I also have an older pc(2003) Specs: Amd Athlon Xp 1900+(1200Mhz Real frequency) Nvidia GeForce 440 MX, Raidmax PSU(with 2 fans) 500gb hard drive, 1 gb + 256 mb DDR1 and....Old case....Also...It's got new Thermal Compound, so it stays at room temp.

  • Very good, bravo. :)

  • afcource xubuntu is better than vista! vista is the biggest fail microsoft ever made!

  • Wonderful solution for older laptops.

  • I'm using Xubuntu on a 10 year old computer = 933 MHz / 512 MB RAM and it's like I have a brand new computer. No viruses worries, stable, secure, tons and tons of programs. And best of all, it's free.

  • @JesusManson323 Yes, and of course is better than a Windows 98 / ME solution for an old notebook.

  • man linux fakes some things form microsoft windows!!!!!!!

  • Did you think is a old PC?I got a older one:Pentium 2 MMX 233Mhz,32 MB ram, S3 Trio64V2/DX/GX 775/785, Hdd 3.99 GB...

    So? What did you think?

  • Amazing...will Microsoft EVER get a clue, and have their products work well rather than with all the bells and whistles? =)

Good to see that hardware can have its' life extended with a simple change of software! (sigh...now, I only wish I could get a distro that would work on a 90Mhz Pentium I.... )

  • @pheenix42 bells and whisles...you mean windows that spin in a cube? Or wiggle?

Those sound like bells and whisles to me...>_>

  • @darkwiz666 You are, of course, correct sir...I guess what I really should have said was 'bloatware', you know? =)

  • @pheenix42

I've heard good things about DSL, "Damn small linux" - see if that works on it :)

  • Well, when I entered "linux running on very old pc" I actually expected REALLY old pcs. I own an old Dell notebook with about 500mhz, and 128 ram, and even Xubuntu is too mch for this system. I guess I will give DSL a try, eventhough I am do not know much about installing it.

  • @Olivander12

I guess I will try VectorLinux, Tell me if you like DSL, I had a hard time to set it up for my computer.

  • @linktwo Few minutes ago I finished installing DSL. If you follow the instructions given in DSL itself, it is not very hard. It works pretty good, and I quite suprised about the high range of functions you can use. The only thing I dislike is the point, that DSL is more than any other linux os, bound very strictly to the internet. You have to install a whole lot of apps through this mydsl browser, and that is much easier if you just have a working internet connection.

  • @Olivander12

    Thank you :)

  • @linktwo Additionally, most included tools can only be used via internet. Nevertheless, DSL might be even used as a "normal" OS. I managed it to watch DVDs without being choppy, my next project would be to present power point documents and slide shows with my photos. If both things work, DSl will be installed on my laptop I use for my work, since I only need it for presentations.

  • it works great

  • Good luck doing anything useful with it.

  • I lvoe xubuntu. I am running it on a mac ibook from 2001 atm :)

    PowerPC 500mhz and 128mb ram. ~6gb HDD.

Everything except sound (dunno why) works!

  • mines much older :)

  • YOU CAN STILL DO SHIT WITH AN OLD COMP

BUT YOU CAN'T RUN MOST SOFTWARE LIKE DEVELOPING, PROGRAMMING, VIDEO EDITING.

aLL THE NEW SOFTWARE REQUIRES 1 GB MIN

  • Why does mine not run like this? I have Intel 1.7ghz, 1gig ram, 7200rpm HD and Ubuntu 9.04. Also tried about a dozen different distros. Slow flash and no effects. Youtube is bad, Hulu is a no go. Is my integrated Intel graphics making this much difference? I have even turned it up to 256mb video ram and still no difference.

  • Are you using the right driver?

  • Comment removed

  • Get a video card, the less pricey ones nowadays are at least 512mb and cost about US$70 or more. Before buying a video card, check if your motherboard has a newer pcie slot or an older agp slot. Intel's integrated graphics for all I know is very slow, especially on older motherboards.

  • Ubuntu - absolutely superb. I never use Vista on my laptop. Just XP for work. Vista and XP are ok, not bad at all but Ubuntu is really terrific, especially as it's free.

You can see how well it's written when you see it on a supposedly old and decrepit machine.

  • @herbal1971 vista is not ok!! win 7 is better vista is slow!

  • Pentium III on 800Mhz?? You're kiddin me right? Why don't you try and run youtube on PII 400Mhz with 192Mb RAM? PII800Mhz is a ultra CPU comparing to PII400...

  • @AORCrazy i run youtube on my old imb laptop pII 366 mhz and 128 mb ram and it works but the screen is half broken so i only see half youtube LOL

  • Compiz Fusion geforce 2 mx 200 32mb start?

  • THAT IS NOT AN OLD COMPUTER

  • Pentium III is old

  • LRN2COMPUTER

  • ...And that's what YOU think.

  • This video has inspired me to bring my old Dell Dimension 3000 w/ 512 mb of ram back to life. Bought a 64mb graphics card for $15 to help. We shall see...

  • @hackersville New Way home by the foo fighters

  • I have a new PC with XP. XP's 'Grace Period" nag about registering ran out this morning. So, I said to myself, 'Self, I paid for XP. Now Microsoft wants to tether it to this machine. If the machine goes flooey, I have to buy a new OS. I remembered that I had Xubuntu on a CD, but never tried it. I tried it.

I want the last 10 years of my computing life back, Microsoft.

  • Tell me about it. I felt the same way when my cousin handed me Linux after Microsoft just didn't cut it for me, anymore. I just kept beating myself up for all the time and money I wasted on Windows.

  • Yeah its so funny how even a shitty celeron with ubuntu can destroy a quad core computer's performance in vista and even 7. XP is the only windows thats decently fast but not even close to any linux distro. And XP is awesome at bluescreening too. If my ubuntu ever thrashes i just ctrl+alt F1 and kill the bad app with htop, and it's very rare that that EVER happens. Long live LINUX.

  • @glasgoggomobil

"I want the last 10 years of my computing life back, Microsoft"

Your the one tht decided to use Windows...

  • @thedaring1s When a computer is shipped with Windows, the decision is made already, asshat.

  • @glasgoggomobil

soo what stops u from downloading a linux distro and wipeing windows??

  • @thedaring1s Oy gevalt. Seriously? I did install Ubuntu. That's why I said "I tried it". Please stop replying.

  • @glasgoggomobil

then whyd u say I want the last 10 years of my computing life back, Microsoft.when you jus culda done tht

  • @thedaring1s hey dumass he said he had windows installed on his machine then discovered linux and regretted not finding it earlier he said he wanted 10 yrs back cause he paid for microsoft and it is crap

  • @2n107

u managed to pull all tht crap outta one post, im impressed O.O

  • ive got xubuntu 9.10 on my ps3

  • I got Linux on my SonyEricsson!

  • exactly that's it! This is what I keep saying to people - this stuff runs on ANYTHING and it's suspiciously amazing :)

  • incredible....look so funny

    emilio

  • yeah, xubuntu is really fast. i have a computer that looks like this one, and it's fast as hell here.

  • Actually, that's what OpenOffice is for.

  • why?

  • whatever.

  • actually, unlike windows, linux is complete without being bloated.

  • OpenOffice reads Microsoft Office files fine, and can make the exact same files at a smaller size.

Also, I have to wonder how long you allowed yourself to use Linux before you decided that it's a "bone with no meat on it."

Either it couldn't have been very long, or you just don't care enough to get under the hood.

  • well you cant use gimp photo editor

  • openoffice does everything that Microsoft Office does for free. Enjoy your $100+ office suite.

  • agree OOo can do everything! especially officecalc

  • HOly Crrap Roffl 32 MB

  • WTF -4 ? If you do not believe it's you test by yourself! !

  • it doesn't depend entirely on amount of ram, but moreso on cpu clock and graphics card. I know that compix can work terribly on a rage 128 pro, but excellent on a radeon 7200.

  • I ditched Windows last year and every time I think about doing the dual boot thing again I pull up WINE App DB and decide against it. The future of computers is Linux.

  • lol memories ~ back in the days this would be "the shit"

  • open source for the win ;)

  • @jaypee112233 You know it, jaypee!! =)

  • Thankyou very much for your video. You may have just saved me a costly and pointless upgrade of laptop.

  • It might be a good idea to send the poster some of the money you saved. Not a lot of money, just small money. If all the people who were helped sent him some money, it would make it worth his while to keep making such videos.

  • I think it'd be more appropriate to donate money to the free software foundation or some other open source project...i mean they did make it after all!

  • @YGRoundNo2 or just spread the videoes around and youtube will give him cash when they go viral

  • That is Awesome! Thank you for making a great vid. We need to Spread the knowledge of FREE software.

  • This is just too cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Love it.

  • superb! just poor resolution rofl

  • Xubuntu is an operating system, not a program.

  • Well, not quite EVERYTHING windows could do. Crisis would rape that computer lol

  • Hey, did you use ALTERNATIVE or The normal installation?

  • I just got a new laptop with 2 years old technology!

    Intel Atom N270 @ 1.60GHz

    Intel GMA 950 w/ 298MB memory

    0,99GB SDRAM

    10,1" WXVGA screen

    160GB HDD

  • xubuntu 8.04 runs fairly slowly on my old laptop, 256 megs of ram, p3 1.1 ghz cpu, geforce 2...

  • well try Xubuntu 9.10 and that will fix it

  • I used to have a very similar setup years ago XD

  • nice(y)

  • And on my Athlon XP 2200+, 1GB of RAM and Radeon 9200 64MB is still lagging.

Because of the damn Flash player in Firefox!

  • It just goes to show how Microsoft is a bunch of pricks who wants us buy more shit.

  • Oh now i noticed... i read it wrong :p

  • PIII-800 with 32mb ram? thats odd... doesnt xubuntu requires 192mb(128minimun) ?

  • The memory card has 32. The system RAM is 128.

  • its an old distro 7.10 xubuntu !

and still can but with the lag !

he has a old Ge force so thats help too !

    Dude its linux !

    Hell ya its awesome !

P.S : Sorry for my bad english !

  • 32MB video Nvidia Geforce2, 128MB RAM, read again....

  • that looks really nice. I've intalled ubuntu and later I have done the same thing with a similar old compmuter I have At home. it works.

  • Yes, Xubuntu is one of the best distributions of linux. Go to my channel, I have made the Xubuntu Logo on Blender, in Linux Xubuntu 9.04.

  • Yes , again windows it is a big big big fuking joke from our money !!! Ave Linus Torvalds ... fuck Bill Gates and all MS Mafia!!

  • does anybody know how to get a flash player for xubuntu i cant watch youtube videos yet?

  • Yeah, go to Synaptic and search for flashplugin-nonfree. Install it and restart your web browser. For more help message me.

  • thanks it works

  • just go on adobe website and you should find instructions on how to procede ;)

  • yeah the easier solution would be like "ubuntututorials" explained

  • Vista Sucks my ASS i love Linux and Mac

  • Can't complain about Windows' price when comparing the price to Apple software. lol

  • that is so cool it actually works on that old of a computer

  • is this better than xp

  • Yes... considering Ubuntu is from '09 and XP from '01.

  • you smust ee that this machine is really old... is like you try to install vista in a pii (really doesn't run on it.... with linux you have the posibility to get the really power of your machine)

that is the point!!!! try something good

  • LINUX OWNS MICROSUCK WINDOWS..... and mac

  • in visuals definitely, but not compatibility

  • in compatibility too !! i own microsucks vista , and i have ubuntu on it, wubi installer is better with it.

  • WINE

  • nice, but to be fair, this is a VERY low resolution (800x600?) but other than that, nice... I will be getting an old P4 rig from my friend so I can get my case mod working (moded the case but am broke, so cant afford a good rig) found this video to see what people were able to get out of Xubuntu (I know what it can look like... I have Ubuntu, but I didnt know what specs I would need)

  • that's 1024x786 - more like standard

  • thanks for the info, but 1024x786 is only the standard for web pages... there is no actual standard for desktop resolutions... you are supposed to use your desktops native resolution (for example, my "standard" would be 1920x1200...)

  • by "standard" i meant the res that developers of both software and web pages design for. i wouldn't say 800x600 is VERY low - it's just one notch below "standard"

  • oh :) sry for my misunderstanding lol :)

  • use old pcs save the world your money and be proud 2

your difernt from the people(i know many) who say i dunno wats windows

on facebook i just switch it on and then after a while off ...

  • Vista sucks

  • my vista machine crashed and i get a black screen on boot up. im rolling with linux. We really need to do a global boycott from microsoft until they correct the products they charge us so dearly for.
