Weird I'm trying to run it on a 2.0 GHz AMD processor with 384 MB of ram but it's way slower than this. I expected greater performance than Windows XP.
P-III 800? GeForce 2/400? That'd actually be a perfectly decent XP or even Vista machine if you put just £5-10 of ebay RAM into it (aka 1Gb... or 768mb if that's all it'll take). 128mb chips are just about worthless outside of a museum these days. What's the HDD?
Xubuntu will load ok on 128 but good luck running ever so many programs in that much memory :-/
Half gig or more is dirt cheap these days... we simply throw out (well ok, recycle) 256mb chips at my workplace.
I have a similar config, 700MHz, 512 RAM, geforce mx2. The problem is Firefox just dies on it. KDE dies on it. It can't even play the new hi-res movies. Now it's just an Apache and git server and an all around file server.
I have Xubuntu 11.04 runing on a Dell Latitude C610 from 11 years ago haha. The laptop has an ATI Mobility Radeon card with 16 MB of DDR RAM, a 1.2GHz processor and 512 MB of SDRAM. I can't get compiz to enable. Any ideas?
i have a P 3, 950 MHz, but i think it hasnt got video card... so... its not too good, puppy linux and xubuntu were running, sometimes lagging, but compiz would be too much for it
did you try the new ubuntu there? ubuntu 10.04 or ubuntu 10.10, or the upcoming 11.04? do you think can run as well as gutsy? you should change the title, better than vista and win 7, xD
When my microsoft software gets old and corrupt and doesn't run right and I try to fix it by copying files from another system or installing a hard disk from another system, I have to feel like a criminal pirate just to fix the system I paid for!
@arinlares Yes, but now I'm having a bigger issue, xgl is installed but it isn't recognized by Xubuntu 8.04, compiz recognized the driver for my onboard SIS graphics, but XGL isn't enabled, how do I enable it?
@arinlares New issue, I deleted the files from the /usr/bin/ that regards to compiz, I noticed that Synaptic doesn't entirely delete every scrap of compiz that's on the computer, so I figured I delete them on my own using the sudo rm -file- command. Now compiz isn't even recognized, does this mean I have to reinstall the whole OS all over again? Man, all of these driver issues and xgl are a pain but it's so worth it for compiz!
this actually makes me kind of furious at Microsoft for needlessly bloating their new operating systems just so hardware manufacturers can make a couple bucks.
I also have an older pc(2003) Specs: Amd Athlon Xp 1900+(1200Mhz Real frequency) Nvidia GeForce 440 MX, Raidmax PSU(with 2 fans) 500gb hard drive, 1 gb + 256 mb DDR1 and....Old case....Also...It's got new Thermal Compound, so it stays at room temp.

Well, when I entered "linux running on very old pc" I actually expected REALLY old pcs. I own an old Dell notebook with about 500mhz, and 128 ram, and even Xubuntu is too mch for this system. I guess I will give DSL a try, eventhough I am do not know much about installing it.
@linktwo Few minutes ago I finished installing DSL. If you follow the instructions given in DSL itself, it is not very hard. It works pretty good, and I quite suprised about the high range of functions you can use. The only thing I dislike is the point, that DSL is more than any other linux os, bound very strictly to the internet. You have to install a whole lot of apps through this mydsl browser, and that is much easier if you just have a working internet connection.
@linktwo Additionally, most included tools can only be used via internet. Nevertheless, DSL might be even used as a "normal" OS. I managed it to watch DVDs without being choppy, my next project would be to present power point documents and slide shows with my photos. If both things work, DSl will be installed on my laptop I use for my work, since I only need it for presentations.
Why does mine not run like this? I have Intel 1.7ghz, 1gig ram, 7200rpm HD and Ubuntu 9.04. Also tried about a dozen different distros. Slow flash and no effects. Youtube is bad, Hulu is a no go. Is my integrated Intel graphics making this much difference? I have even turned it up to 256mb video ram and still no difference.
Get a video card, the less pricey ones nowadays are at least 512mb and cost about US$70 or more. Before buying a video card, check if your motherboard has a newer pcie slot or an older agp slot. Intel's integrated graphics for all I know is very slow, especially on older motherboards.
Ubuntu - absolutely superb. I never use Vista on my laptop. Just XP for work. Vista and XP are ok, not bad at all but Ubuntu is really terrific, especially as it's free.
You can see how well it's written when you see it on a supposedly old and decrepit machine.
Pentium III on 800Mhz?? You're kiddin me right? Why don't you try and run youtube on PII 400Mhz with 192Mb RAM? PII800Mhz is a ultra CPU comparing to PII400...
This video has inspired me to bring my old Dell Dimension 3000 w/ 512 mb of ram back to life. Bought a 64mb graphics card for $15 to help. We shall see...
I have a new PC with XP. XP's 'Grace Period" nag about registering ran out this morning. So, I said to myself, 'Self, I paid for XP. Now Microsoft wants to tether it to this machine. If the machine goes flooey, I have to buy a new OS. I remembered that I had Xubuntu on a CD, but never tried it. I tried it.
I want the last 10 years of my computing life back, Microsoft.
Tell me about it. I felt the same way when my cousin handed me Linux after Microsoft just didn't cut it for me, anymore. I just kept beating myself up for all the time and money I wasted on Windows.
Yeah its so funny how even a shitty celeron with ubuntu can destroy a quad core computer's performance in vista and even 7. XP is the only windows thats decently fast but not even close to any linux distro. And XP is awesome at bluescreening too. If my ubuntu ever thrashes i just ctrl+alt F1 and kill the bad app with htop, and it's very rare that that EVER happens. Long live LINUX.
@thedaring1s hey dumass he said he had windows installed on his machine then discovered linux and regretted not finding it earlier he said he wanted 10 yrs back cause he paid for microsoft and it is crap
it doesn't depend entirely on amount of ram, but moreso on cpu clock and graphics card. I know that compix can work terribly on a rage 128 pro, but excellent on a radeon 7200.
I ditched Windows last year and every time I think about doing the dual boot thing again I pull up WINE App DB and decide against it. The future of computers is Linux.

I think it'd be more appropriate to donate money to the free software foundation or some other open source project...i mean they did make it after all!
you smust ee that this machine is really old... is like you try to install vista in a pii (really doesn't run on it.... with linux you have the posibility to get the really power of your machine)
nice, but to be fair, this is a VERY low resolution (800x600?) but other than that, nice... I will be getting an old P4 rig from my friend so I can get my case mod working (moded the case but am broke, so cant afford a good rig) found this video to see what people were able to get out of Xubuntu (I know what it can look like... I have Ubuntu, but I didnt know what specs I would need)
thanks for the info, but 1024x786 is only the standard for web pages... there is no actual standard for desktop resolutions... you are supposed to use your desktops native resolution (for example, my "standard" would be 1920x1200...)
by "standard" i meant the res that developers of both software and web pages design for. i wouldn't say 800x600 is VERY low - it's just one notch below "standard"
my vista machine crashed and i get a black screen on boot up. im rolling with linux. We really need to do a global boycott from microsoft until they correct the products they charge us so dearly for.
Compiz + Xfce... HOW THE FUCK IS THAT POSSIBLE?!?!?! D: Last I checked, there was no Xfce compatibility plugin for Compiz...

I think it'd be more appropriate to donate money to the free software foundation or some other open source project...i mean they did make it after all!
skullauk 2 years ago 4
@YGRoundNo2 or just spread the videoes around and youtube will give him cash when they go viral

nice, but to be fair, this is a VERY low resolution (800x600?) but other than that, nice... I will be getting an old P4 rig from my friend so I can get my case mod working (moded the case but am broke, so cant afford a good rig) found this video to see what people were able to get out of Xubuntu (I know what it can look like... I have Ubuntu, but I didnt know what specs I would need)
devo85x 2 years ago
that's 1024x786 - more like standard
ultrafishmaniac 2 years ago
thanks for the info, but 1024x786 is only the standard for web pages... there is no actual standard for desktop resolutions... you are supposed to use your desktops native resolution (for example, my "standard" would be 1920x1200...)
devo85x 2 years ago
by "standard" i meant the res that developers of both software and web pages design for. i wouldn't say 800x600 is VERY low - it's just one notch below "standard"
ultrafishmaniac 2 years ago
oh :) sry for my misunderstanding lol :)
