Egypt did hold a small strip of land on the eastern bank of the Suez, at the price of having the IDF on the western bank holding a huge bulge of land advancing to 100 km from Cairo and with the Egyptian Third Army besieged. The oil embargo was a powerful weapon for the Arabs but in the long run it backfired. It encouraged the West to seek other sources of oil as well as alternatives to oil.
According to Edgar Oballance, Kissinger visited Moscow to beg a cease-fire for the Israelis, then the soviet PM visited Sadat to press for a cease-fire.

Henry Kissinger in his own words said that a day after the Israelis crossed the canal he was contacted by Brezhnev and invited to go to Moscow. Even though the 1967 war was more clearly an Israeli victory, it was the 1973 war that lead to peace between Egypt and Israel. I think it was a mutual victory for both Israel and Egypt, Israel won military by any rational measure, but Egypt succeeded in reclaiming nearly all of the territory it lost during the 6 day war through diplomacy after the war. The only country that lost was Syria, which gained nothing for all of it's dead. The major outcome was that it brought Egypt (or at least Sadat) to the understanding that Israel could not be defeated militarily. Leading to the Camp David and the relative peace since then

Not exactly. Egypt did hold a small strip of land on the eastern bank of the Suez, at the price of having the IDF on the western bank holding a huge bulge of land advancing to 100 km from Cairo and with the Egyptian Third Army besieged. On the Syrian front Israel completely pushed the Syrian army out of the G.H and advance deep into Syria itself (untill it was 40km from Damascus). On the battlefield IDF won fair and square. Politically Egypt won. Syria lost all around.

The invasion attempt ended with a military defeat by any half rational measure.What differentiated it from earlier lost wars was that Sadat after did the unthinkable to the rest of the Islamic world; he talked directly to and made peace with the Jews; Victorious armies usually don't negotiate with a 'defeated' enemy. Unfortunately his reapportionment with Israel lead to a his death and status as a traitor in much of the Arab world.

Egypt had moderate objectives in the 1973 war:
Capture the entire east bank of the Suez Canal, hold it under SAM cover, open it for sailing and gain economic profits from it as a first step.
But at the end of combat, Israel had a small portion on the east bank and a large portion on the west.
The canal was still closed.
If the war was to continue, Egypt would lose more land,
since their 3rd army was trapped and they had no more long range SAM in the canal area.
Egypt's plan has failed.

The objectives wre simple:
1 destroy the barlev line.
2 advance on the eastern side of the canal to about 12 km and remain under the SAM umbrella.
3 have a military pause (whatever it means??) till they get better anti aircraft missile systems (probably) or superior air forces (unlikely)
in few words, from a crushing egyptian victory during the early days( 200 israeli tanks lost) to a tactical israeli victory and a geostrategical blow to the USSR from the USA

When the 1973 war ended on 26/10, Israel had more land west of Suez Canal than the Egyptians had on the east.
So between 06/10 and 26/10 Israel gained land and Egypt lost land.
The status on 26/10/1973 was:
Egyptians forces in the canal area were exposed to Israeli air strikes unlike the air superior Israelis.
30,000 Egyptian troops were encircled with no access to drinking water.
Egypt begged desperately for a cease fire while Israel wanted to continue the fight.

The Soviets then contacted Kissinger and invited him to Moscow. The ceasefire agreement was agreed to in Moscow by Breznev and Kissinger. The oil embargo was a powerful weapon for the Arabs but in the long run it backfired. It encouraged the West to seek other sources of oil as well as alternatives to oil.

According to the PBS documentary 50Years War:Israel and the Arabs. Henry Kissinger in his own words said that a day after the Israelis crossed the canal he was contacted by Brezhnev and invited to go to Moscow. Also the Documentary says that "Sadat begged the Soviets to arrange a ceasefire". If you don't believe me then you can probably see it for yourself on YouTube.

marvey58: That is a total lie immediately after the war ended Israel held more Egyptian territory on the West Bank of the Suez Canal than Egypt held on the East Bank. Egypt only got the Sinai back years later as a result of the Israeli-Egyptian Peace Treaty of 1979.

And what's wrong with that, Egypt did get Sinai back, he's not lying. War isn't all military. Politics and diplomacy play a large part. Besides, it was the military part war that led to events that forced the zionists to accept the treaty and pull back. Before the war such an offer was refused by the zionists. So technically Egypt got back Sinai only because it went onto war, if it hadn't, the Peace Treaty would have also been refused like all the ones that preceeded it before the war.

I agree with that samrekmir. Since the 1973 war had a more even ending instead of an overwhelming victory for one side both sides were able to make peace as equals. In the end I think both sides won by achieving peace.

The massing of troops was a result of possibly wrong russian intelligence report that claimed that the zionists were themselves massing troops on the syrian borders. It was simply an act of defence not a preperation for an attack but speaking from a military point of view if the zionists considered this a casus belli then this would justify only their attack on the massing troops in Egypt and Syria but it doesn't justify the march on and sieze of Egyptian and Syrian lands(i.e. occupation).

Israel didn't ask a cease fire at the end, and even broke the one that was forced on it by America.
Egypt was the one who asked the first cease fire of the 22/10, when Saadat knew his desperate situation.
The Americans wanted a cease fire as well in order to stop the Arab oil embargo on the U.S.
Not for the saving Israel.
In fact, the soviets were those who threatened to fight on Egypt side,
if the Israelis would have continuing the siege on 3rd army.

Israel's losses on both fronts between 6/10/1973 and 31/5/1974 (disengagement with Syria) are:
2,656 dead, 7,251 wounded, 25 guns lost, 109 aircraft, and 294 POW exactly
and about 800 tanks damaged (half of them were repaired).
Egypt lost:
no less than 54 anti air missile batteries, 279 aircraft 8,273 POW
and about 1000 tanks, 11,300 killed and 25,000 wounded.
POW numbers were given by the Red Cross.

The CIA report of high Israeli casualties between 6/10 and 9/10,
was published only on 10/10/1973.
Therefore it is only an initial inaccurate estimation,
and it is not represent the current U.S estimations of the 1973 war casualties.
Accurate details can only be found after a much more serious research.

Egypt liberated more lands in the east bank of Suez than the israeli occupied lands in the western bank.
Egypt had the ability to destroy the IDF troops in west bank, only the US threat of direct military intervention against Egypt, prevented it from doing so.

Your statement about losses in the war are not true salmizzo. According to Western estimates Israel's losses for the war amount to about 2,800 killed in total and about 233 captured by Egyptian forces. If you subtract Israel's casualties on the Syrain front from the total then it comes out that Israel lost about 2,000 dead against Egypt. In contrast Western estimates for Egyptian losses are from 5,000-12,000 dead and about 8,300 captured.

According to the israeli book "Madness with no atonement" by two mossad officers, David Erbil and Uri Niman, they mentioned that Moshe Dayan planned to commit a new aggression against Egypt in October 8, Dayan said "I expect to reach the nile during the war".
This means that our assault in October 6, was a PREEMPTIVE attack.

Because I think you would have been right if the war would have lasted from October 6 to 13. Then it would have undoubtedly been an Egyptian victory. But if you look at October 14-26, the war ended to Israel's advantage. The way you speak is the same as if I as an American say that just because of Japanese success at Pearl Harbor in the beginning the USA lost the whole war.

You are quite stubborn egyptianfalcon. I would say that from what I have studied about the 1973 war the main thing that Israel ultimately won was peace with Egypt. Even though the 1967 war was more clearly an Israeli victory, it was the 1973 war that lead to peace between Egypt and Israel. And that was Israel's greatest prize to make peace and receive recognition from an Arab country.

The strongest part of the Ayyubid Egyptian Army were the Mamluks who later ruled Egypt. It was they who truly defeated the Crusaders. The were mostly Turkish and some were Circassians. Their great leaders like Baibars and Qutuz were Turks. The Mamluks spoke mostly Turkish and not Arabic and they mostly married Turkish women and not Arab women. The Arabs of Egypt cannot claim the glory of the mostly Turkish Mamluks.
