got to hang out backstage with them whenever my dad took me to a show wish i appreciated it more back then. (not around the time of this vid around 2000 or so)
All citizens should be required by law to listen to Lowell George and Little Feat 'Waiting for Columbus' album once before proceeding on with their lives.
Lowell George and Ritchie Hayward-- RIP You both brought me so much joy over the years, and the music you played in the 1970s --it's all firmly secured in my teenage psyche. You know? When you hear a tune and it carries you back to the place and time you were in when you first began to devour such tasty tunes!
I became a bass player in 1979 for two reasons - to play "Something" and to play "Spanish Moon". This is pretty much identical to the Waiting for Columbus version (not a bad thing at all). I remember the general consensus for that album when it came out - that it represented a band in decline, that LF had lost its edge. Bahahaha!
That Tower of Power horn section is laying it down! Outstanding version. Hoping to possibly finally see LF live for the first time here in Maryland on New Year's Eve!
Still gives me chills listening to these guys. All great musicians sometimes it is easy to overlook just how great a bassplayer Kenny Gradney is. . . There is a way that he just sticks the notes, leans over them and delivers the whole phrase that is just unbelievable. . Really get a sense of it at the end when it is just the three of them playing. . . . Not an ounce of fat on what he plays every note every phrase just right in the pocket.
@bonzaitribe My dad told me about how before John Belushi passed he was trying to get Lowell George's life made into a movie and him play Lowell. That would have been truly epic.
@smokytehbear Yeah, there's an interview on here with Bill Payne where he brings that up and remarks how Belushi chose to "play Lowell", but off screen, and went out the same way. Just as well, 'cause John Belushi just wasn't pretty enough to play Lowell. Jack Black's yer man, even Bill Payne says it. There's a facebook page "Make a Lowell George movie and cast Jack Black!" Check it out...
As I recall that night at the Rainbow, Lowell was off stage for most of the night. Quarrelling with Barrere I believe. IF I hadn't been so ripped I might have picked up more of the vibe. Whatever. It was one of my most memorable gigs ever...
@Jackalope40 ...and yet, still the best thing since sliced bread...one of the greatest and most overlooked albums ever made. I wore the record out back in the day, and now I'm working on wearing the CDs out....
Little Feat was a great live band back in the day. And dealerswild is right. The reefer was unfreakingbelievable. Red bud, Acapulco gold, Jamaican, you name it. So easy to get in the groove with the Feat and a big doobie.
Little Feat shows are fun these days .... in those days, they kicked major ass. One of the baddest ass tunes they ever did. Long Live the Feat, RIP Richie.
Just awesome... and they still Rock... check out their new live cd... We heard a track yesterday... Killer, with Ron Holloway on sax.... Time for Ron To be an "Official" member... Come on Feat Fans.... tell em ...
Geez! These guys were so fabulous! Too bad nobody thought to catch the "Waiting for Columbus" concert on film. Billy Payne playing two keyboard parts simultaneously at about 2.5 minutes. Tower of Power horns the Feat doing an old fashioned New Orleans Dixieland "walk by" at 5 minutes.
JUST BRILLIANT. God I wish I could have an experience like this concert during the 2010 summer. Only the Radiators can come a little close when they are having a supreme night. But Lowell George took us very close to the WOMAN we all love. We now need a super computer to clean up the sound on this incredible set of music from the Rainbow. And that slide down is deadly.

Some say this wasn't Richie on the studio version. It may have been the drummer White from Earth ,Wind and Fire.

Waiting for Columbus was their masterpiece far as I'm concerned.
Just a collection of the best performances.
An aside, one wonders the amount of blow they did that night.
