I agree. I saw Seal play at the Orange County Fair last year, and Macy Gray was supposed to open for him, but she pulled out because she was double-booked. So Nikka Costa was chosen to open, and I was happy for the change. I had heard of her when her first CD came out, but never bought it. She rocked the place, a great opener, probably the best opener I've ever heard. I immediately went out and got her albums.

Winehouse and Stone are big mostly because they're white. If they were black, they'd be on small labels with small fan bases. Winehouse just has a good producer creating that style for her. Stone's an oversinger. But Nikka Costa is truly talented, her race not an issue. When I saw her live, she got the people out their seats, and this was in stuffy Orange County. I wish she was bigger, but at the same time, it's good she can do her own thing without the pressure of mainstream labels.

I saw her live this summer, playing before Seal, and she puts on a very fun, get-you-on-your-feet and you can tell she has talent, unlike Joss Stone, who's just a "pretty" white girl from Europe. It's easy to tell Costa has music chops, not just a white girl with black singers and musicians behind her. I'm a longtime fan of music in general, and you can tell she has the music in her in comparison to Stone. I try to tell people that if Stone were black she'd be an unknown. Costa is underrated.

I saw lil' Nikka live about 11 years ago when she was living in Oz (she recorded her 5th album "Butterfly Rocket" here).She was tiny,but did she have a voice!
