As for the increasing taxes, I am against any system that punishes people simply for making more money than someone else. We should have a flat tax that EVERYONE pays, with no exemptions or exclusions.

Many Walmart employees qualify for food stamp benefits. Do you think WALMART could remain a viable corporate entity if they increased their wages? And wage suppression has the effect of hurting the economy at large as for obvious reasons these people can only afford the essentials.

While they may not make a great deal in hourly wages, they do get some share of the profits. BTW, keep in mind that you must look at profits relative to the size of the company. Capitalism works when allowed to work by the government. Of course, we need laws to make sure that a contract is binding on both parties. @CommonSenseJoe As far as the public unions are concerned, I find it amusing, but not surprising that those who rail against them because the average wage is a little over 40K [ while private sector wages average a little over 30K, which is in itself shameful] nontheless howl against the prospect of taxing those who make a quarter of a million of more and additional 3.5 percent to help balance the budget. @molloyxx1 The problem with public sector unions is that THEY are enjoying a level of benefits that rarely exists in the private sector. Few, in any companies, offer a guarantee pension anymore. Most people have to pay a fair share of the health insurance costs.
As for the increasing taxes, I am against any system that punishes people simply for making more money than someone else. We should have a flat tax that EVERYONE pays, with no exemptions or exclusions.

The productivity of the American worker has steadily increased throughout this period yet income disparity is at its highest point in the modern era. These stark realities suggest to me there is something fundamentally wrong with capaitalism.

@CommonSenseJoe WALMART employees 1.2 million Ameircans. Most of those workers are 'sales associates' or cashiers, whose average wage is appx 8.81 an hour. That is less than 18K per year. Many Walmart employees qualify for food stamp benefits. Do you think WALMART could remain a viable corporate entity if they increased their wages? And wage suppression has the effect of hurting the economy at large as for obvious reasons these people can only afford the essentials.

Do you know how many retail stores and chains have closed or are struggle to stay open today? Again, probably not! Here's an easy question for you. What are the educational qualifications needed to work at a Walmart? NONE! This is why their wages are as low as they are. However, they qualify for food stamps because we have raised the maximum income.

@molloyxx1 Great for Walmart! Do you know how much of that will be shared with the employees in terms of stock and such? While they may not make a great deal in hourly wages, they do get some share of the profits. BTW, keep in mind that you must look at profits relative to the size of the company. Walmart does employ lots of people and provides low cost products to consumers.

@molloyxx1 The economy was collapsing because the government has screwed around in the market for decades and forced banks to make loans they never should have made. FREDDY and FANNY were screwing with the market as well. The stock market will always have it's ups and downs, as will 401Ks. The President cannot take any credit for them going up. It is the Republicans and their efforts to reign in the President that has brought them up. (Also the fed messing in the market as well.)

@molloyxx1 What killed the savings and loan business was government involvement. When interest rates dramatically changed, it caught them holding lots of low interest mortgages. California caused their own problem by not having the capacity to generate enough electricity for their own state. They had price controls that drove out suppliers. Those who participating in the credit default swaps should have been allowed to go bankrupt. You should gamble if you cannot afford to lose.

Absolutely....they saw it as an opportunity. However, the government created the opportunity by their own regulation of the market place. If the government had let those investment banks go bankrupt, then the market would have punished them. Instead, the government rewarded them.

@molloyxx1 I disagree. I think they should have been placed in receivership and their assets sold off to other banks and such. If you reward them for failure, you will have more of it. You must recognize however that they were forced by the government to make riskier loans or face government retribution. The lesson to be learned is that the government should stay out of the market place. Even companies like FREDDY and FANNY MAC were involved in the problem. It was not "naked greed".

I find some cognitive dissonance when it comes to Dems and Keynesianism. If you accept the Keynesian paradigm, then you're right: cutting spending during recession would in fact damage employment - but guess what, so would cutting "bad" spending such as military. Also, during a recession you can't really raise taxes either. Either fix the economy or the deficit, but don't bounce between them like an indecisive fool.
(To be fair, Republicans are way bigger morons when it comes to the economy.)
