Without the chains they would have been just spinning the tires and going nowhere. I don't care how good their 4wd is, if the tires aren't getting traction then they aren't going anywhere. Hence the tire chains, for traction.

You can get at any place you want,

The chains are for extra grip for climbing up a hill.
