Jah Rastafari did bless Michael, but I & I know seh de wicked Babylon did come to destabilize Jam down, just like how dem kill of Gaddafi, Bob Marley and the list goes on and on.
"Message" was also known unofficially as "Spangler's Rock" Neville Martin had a similar followup single called "The Cliques", warning about those who were fighting against Manley - and those who had similarly opposed great Jamaicans of the past (Sam Sharpe, Nanny, Marcus Garvey, Paul Bogle).
aside from the somewhat dubious comparisons linking Manley to the JA national heros, it was a good tune.
Martin received death threats and left JA until after the '76 elections were over.
Wow this bring back memories, Michael Manley had the vision, but as usual, the majority of the people could not see it. Most of them were and still is, concern with the one day bellyful. I miss u Prime Minister Manley. There will be no more like you - ever.
Degoeccles, my husband and I knew your father and wrote about him in our Reggae Quarterly magazine in 1985 or 86, and we sold a few records for him in Canada.
Clancy was a giant of reggae and produced some of the most memorable (but unfortunately overlooked) music. Thank you for keeping his music alive by posting important songs like this one. (although my husband has a soft spot for Kingston Town)
the song lyrics are confusing for those that don't know anything about Jamaica at that time (the 1976 elections) - it is a PNP partisan record, a middle finger to "dem who no love progress"... "my leader born yah" is a dig at U.S. born JLP candidate Edward Seaga, and then the record goes on to talk about all the Manley programs that were started at the time (Land Lease, JAMAL, Pioneer Force, etc.)... and "heavy manners" refers to the govt. martial law clampdown in place at the time.
Thanks to every one who keeps my father Clancy Eccles alive by listening to his music. He Wrote and produce this one for Michael Manley and the 1976 election.
I remember this record in 1976 it was a big hit, it was used as an election record in Jamaica, i got it in my collection. Give thanks for the post, One Love Jah Rastafari , Ras Order
