  • This is from 1987? wow, the graphics makes it like from a SNES game

  • I mean it's pretty impressive that you didn't get hit and all that, but it doesn't really seem like a "speed run." :)

  • The fastest way to beat the waterfall level is actually probably to grab the invincibility item at the beginning and then ascend the stage completely ignoring all enemies and kill the boss while still invulnerable. IMO.

  • Contra reminds me even MORE of Alien now. They even ripped the Pulse Rifle.

  • @3:59 "Hey Commander, we've reached the hostile human, should we run him over with our spiked grill?" "Hmmm, no. Hit the brakes, sit still and keep shooting over his head. That ought to work." "But sir, he keeps shooting at us.." "Don't worry, we have our orders and I'm sure Red Falcon knows what.." *KABOOM*

  • The only thing the Arcade version has on the NES one is the graphics. The NES game has tighter controls and better level design.

  • People that say the NES version is superior wouldn't be saying this if they weren't brought up on the NES version. The arcade version shits on the NES version, despite it not being nearly as popular.

  • Has anyone noticed that in the arcade version you shoot in 16 directions?

  • Just goes to show you kids, Fancy Graphics don't make a game any better.

  • That's now I say: 8Bit music is the shit !

  • I remember back in the NES heyday when Contra was all the rage on that console. What I always found interesting is just how few people knew that there even WAS a Contra arcade machine (or rather, that the NES game was a port of an arcade title)...most people thought it was a stand-alone game, made for the NES.

Both have their merits but the arcade version is just too bloody short. But then, it only costs 25 cents to play and NES games were...50 bucks? So I would expect longer levels. =)

  • @Skyrift Agreed. I remember playing Contra at a Pizza Hut in my younger days. I always thought arcade games look and sounded better than consoles, but there's something about the NES Contra experience that cannot be replicated: the Contra code, the hours of sitting in front of the TV with friends and cursing every cheap kill (scrolling deaths). Graphics didn't make the game, the experience did. I'm a proud gamer of the console generation. :)

  • anyone else go "Oh shit, spread gun" at 3:29

  • wow who would've known in the arcade, the laser is the best weapon where in the other port, its the most hated weapon

  • @destructorv2 the laser "most hated" says who?

  • arcade version is much better... It's NOT EVEN CLOSE... Lol Nes version? Smh I remember when this first dropped in the arcades... Just like Street fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat.. Awesome

  • contra arcade is better than contra nes

  • Hey I'm looking for someone to help me pass Contra in co-op. If you are interested send me a message on xbox live. Gt: SvG Prodigy

  • damn shame when an 8bit Nintendo version looks and sounds better than an arcade version!

  • he jumps like he's stuck in a washing machine :D

  • man the NES version was WAY better!!

  • @PuertoreekinPapi

    No, it wasn't.

  • @PuertoreekinPapi

No, it's not. The arcade version is WAY better!!

  • @PuertoreekinPapi you sir, are blind!

  • Interesting arcade version

  • He looks like a Snes basketball player XD

  • such a diverse staff

  • The arcade version looks like it sucks compared to the NES version. When the player flips it looks like he's falling out of a chair.

  • I thought that Arcade Contra is hard... until I played the 10th loop of the NES port.

  • the sound is similar to mega drive

  • @ERIMATAIMY As well as the Sega Mark III and Sega Master System with the Custom 'FM Sound' expansion pack added to them.

  • very nice ported to nes

  • look like hes got a bad pair of moldy dirty old socks on

  • This may look like crap for some people but still I loved to hear the the original music in this arcade mode as it meant to be. Still the nes one is more challenging.

  • only real players use laser!

  • Not only is the NES version just a better game, it's also a hell of a lot more difficult...

  • @wootlanter the arcade Contra *is* difficult as hell, if you play on the Hardest mode.

  • this seems more like easy mode. the enemies are all kill'd in no time.

  • @tatsujincorp you are killed in no time too

  • isnt this weird how the NES version is more popular than the arcade game XD

  • @smbmadman1 NES kinda made the game better

  • uuuughhhhhh this looks like shit compared to the nes version !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @single4themoment i know right

  • @Gum2Gum ikr

  • 4:16 Oh, great. Bill VS Football player. Now Idk if they put that enemy for serious or for lawl.

  • 0:03 should've saved the giant fart for the aliens

  • I happy to someone play this without useing the spread gun

  • Wow, I thought I was old school playing the NES version, I was wrong! xD. Wish I could've played this when I was a kid, we didn't have it at our arcade =(..

  • i thought at the end the earth gets blown up?

  • Fuck the NES version, I wanna play THIS. And the music here sounds pretty sweet using the FM Synth, especially the "The End" jingle that plays after the credits.

  • @JavonteTreble You can play it using MAME, or else you can get it on XBLA.

  • did anyone ever finally figure out who the charecters are based off of? it doesnt take much to figure lance is based off sylvester stalone in rambo and bill is based off dutch from predator. just look at the nes game box, bill is acctually a direct port directly ripped off the predator vhs cover. they did the same thing with metal gear solid, the cover for that was actually michael beine from terminater 1. go look for yourself if you dont believe me.

  • @johnmkrs83 not to mention look at the charecters main weapon, it looks like a pulse rife of colonial marines in ALIENS, even some of the creatures in the game and the creature on the cover resembles a alien. this game is nothing more than a cross between rambo, predator, and ALIENS, that was there intentions. almost all of those movies are in the same time period as the game.

  • This was in 1987? I had no idea that computer technology was so amazingly advanced at the time to produce such a game.

It wasn't for another 4 or 5 years later that the United States was able to produce something on this level for the home PC market.

  • @Galaxieretter You should see "I, Robot" made in 1983.

  • @Galaxieretter Yeah this game was made back in a time where only arcade proprieters could really afford to buy a machine that could pump out 16 bit graphics. We didn't see this stuff at home until the Genesis came out (followed shortly by the SNES) and even then the smoothness of the processing wasn't nearly there.

  • This version of Contra was pretty cool because of it's graphics, but the nes version seems harder than this version of Contra. Also, what's up with four stages of the nes version being combined with one stage of the arcade version. Why just four stages in an arcade game. The only thing that I know is that the TMNT arcade made by the same company has more than four stages. Also I know that the nes version came after the arcade.

  • @Superbattle54 Contra, like most other video games, was originally an arcade game.

The reason why the stages were made that way was part of their development. You can put a middle finger up against someone's WIP project until it is finished to it's "awesomeness" or whatever many call it.

Another reason why the stages were like that is so players can have enough time to finish it before someone they are with comes up and forces them to leave home with them (e.g. parents, girlfriend, etc.).

  • oh god the way they jump ad fliped in midair was so fucking funny, i sent more time laughign at that then shooting the other guys.... then agian it would explain how i finally beat the level $1.50 short

  • Looks fun, but I'll take the NES version over this any day.

  • @glitchedgamer BOOO!!!! SPAAAAM!!!

  • i completed the game just TODAY for the FIRST time EVER with !)$!!)) POINTS REMEMBER 1041110 POINTS MAN REMEMBER 1,041,100 points YAY

  • Each one had their ups and downs Arcade -slicker graphics -Bill and Lance actually resemble Arnie and Sly -better powerups -more simultaneous onscreen objects -higher difficulty NES -More responsive aiming control -longer levels -an actual ending -faster gameplay -catchier, faster music They're both practically completely different games based on the same thing, though. Super C is even more different from it's arcade counterpart than this one.
  • Holy crap, the laser's actually decent. Is this a paradox?

  • @ImpaledWolf Hey, in the NES version, the laser was still actually pretty powerful (more so than the spread gun, in fact) but it was hard to hit moving targets with it. The laser's best for bosses, the spread gun for the levels.

  • ive beaten the nes one, but this is amazing.

  • No Contra arcade, no NES Contra nor even the rest of the Contra series. This is the very first version.

  • NES is about 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 better and harder......

But good speed run anyways! :D

  • Holy shit!I can't beat it even with savestates!!!

  • One Of The Easiest Games Ever

  • Jeez, you make this game seem easy.

  • this looks easier

  • i grew up on the nes version... so wen i played this about a month ago for the first time lol... it didnt feel good but im gettin use to it... have yet to beat the game tho keep losing my last credit on the last level

  • SURPRISE

That's the speedest run as I see. I have tried this game but I have taken for 2 continues.

I know as you play super fast.

  • I think I played the arcade version 1nce as a kid. My best memories are from the NES.

The laser seems a LOT more useful in this game. How are the controls?

  • This actually doesn't look that good, and the levels seem to be about all of 15 seconds long.

Graphics seem really blah for 16-bit too.

  • @BalooRJ

This is the earliest version of the earliest Contra game. Without it, there would be no NES Contra nor its successors. Most games started in the arcades.

The arcade version is short, because what if you just wanted to beat it, while your parents came up to you and said it's time to leave? The arcade version's music sounds like Konami's real voice (which also can be heard in their other arcades), while its NES version's sounds like the voice of Konami and Nintendo's child.

  • Ah, that I didn't know. I thought it was a NES to arcade port.

  • looks cool and the musical score is pretty nice as well, the levels of the nes contra were a bit longer though

  • anyone noticed that the arcade version is a lot shorter than msx2 version? nice vid btw 5*

  • The arcade version used 16 bit graphics with over 200 colors and two different CPU's. So yeah, it would look a lot better than the NES version that only had 16 colors and used one 8-bit processor.

  • seem like the arcade version is better than the NES version...

  • the arcade version will always be better the console one...the nes did have its limitations...but you must admit Konami did a really good job porting this to the nes

  • mmmm Its much hard and funny the nes version :P

  • Awesome kid

    Im subbing! :P

    plz sub :D

  • ear rape

  • I remember the arcade version, and it was hard. The NES version is 100 times better than the arcade. I will stick with "Contra" for the NES, one of the best games ever with a 30-live Konami code.

  • OMG...this brings back memories...

  • the ration is very awful!!

  • Wow. The arcade version actually sucks compared to its ports.

  • I can't get this game to work on my MAME =(

It says I am missing one or more required ROM or CHD files. Could someone help me out?

  • Means you downloaded a bad dump of the rom. Try looking for a torrent with a bunch-o-mame games.

  • ok thanks i'll try that right now

  • I've just got the game running but I lost the game at the 2nd base level

  • kozak :)

  • wow NES version beets this 1 by a bunch

  • great game nicee play!nes version rocks but this is original ARCADE....

  • you said you've found the difficulty setting. where? i've been looking for a more challenging game myself.

  • On MAME you press the tab button and then go into te dip switches option to adjust the difficulty. Works on most MAME games

  • The NES version is FAR superior to the arcade, but the arcade excels in the graphics dept and some sound effects. The arcade had multi-layered backgrounds (I especially LOVED the mountains in stage 1 that pulsated with light!). I also loved the Fireball sound of the arcade more.

Overall, the NES had more playability. 8 individual long stages instead of the last 4 stages compressed into 1 of the arcade.

  • @Joelomite you are right I remember playing the nes version and thinking

this not like the arcade I knew somebody that could beat contra with one

quarter his name was fred johnson I did not know that nes had more levels though, but because I was wanted to always have the real thing at home I would consider the arcade always best and never gave the nes respect, because really a having a little peace of the arcade back then is a thing of dreams

and I guess that part is still with me. arcade

  • so much shorter than the NES version.

  • @the1andonlybigh

Because what if you were playing this at a department store or a restaurant, while your parents tell you it's time to leave while you are half way through the game?

  • @the1andonlybigh If it was as long as or longer than the FC/NES version, most players wouldn't have enough time to beat it before their parents pull them away from it or before they miss out on their concerns outside of gaming.

Another reason why this has some differences other than being an arcade is that it was released a year before the FC/NES version.

  • @the1andonlybigh arcades were meant to be shorter in the event that u managed to beat the game but harder if u didn't but didn't realize how had it was until u sunk 10 bucks work of quarters into it.

  • @the1andonlybigh arcade games were designed to be shorter so if u were that kid who could beat um all, u would either run thru it a couple of times and be done with it (with another quarter of course) or be done with it after the first go. they were also harder for that same reason. it was more profitable that way.

  • I like the way that after you kill the final boss you get another 14 bonus lives.................yeah like that's useful

  • hahaha

  • the NES version is much better. This graphics are alright and the sound its acceptable. But imma stick to gritty, hardcore playing, AWESOME BGM original.

  • I'd like to see a version of the Stage 1 theme that has the Speed it has in the NES version with the heavier percussion of the Arcade version.

  • i can't even imagine how many money i spent on this arcade and never got post third level :-)

  • the only thing about the arcade is the way he jumps it looked weird.

  • he jumps very funny lol

  • like a rotating stick, lulz

  • Audio Is Better On NES. Everytime There Is a Game For Both A Console And An Arcade The Console Version Has Better Audio Like For Example Search Street Fighter 2 Dhalsim SNES Theme And Then Search Street Fighter 2 Dhalsim Arcade Theme The Console Version Sounds Better But Arcade Graphics Are Better Like This Right Here And It Is Funner On Arcade For Some Reason Because You Don't Have To Pay 50$ To Play SF4 Just 50 Cents XD

  • NES actually looks better and sounds better for some reason to me

  • Because you are more familiar with it than the arcade version. Most people prefer the NES versions of nearly every arcade game.

  • i know why the lazer cant shoot rapid fire cuy ita like a need to regenerate but if you press trigger it like makes the fired lazer disapear and colect the fired lazer energy in order to fire if the lazer didnt have that option it would just blow up in youre hands which means instant death

  • Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, Shoot, Jump This code does work in the Arcade Version I own it on my PC.

  • Wasn't the screen supposed to be vertical ?

  • lance and fuckin' bill

  • great video...

  • @djuro20 The NES version was considered an improvement, even with the weaker graphics.

  • @djuro20 BOOO!!!! SPAAAAM!!!

  • @ 1:36 you don't need to bother with the turrent and surprisingly enough you can just jump past the mortor explosion. Do you think its possible to beat the whole game with the lazer on the hardest mode? I've tried it many times unsuccessfully :(. I can get to the end really fast with it, but I die eventually in the alien lair. I've almost given up on the idea because it takes too much time to practice.

  • too bad its a speed run. i was hoping to catch the whole duration of the 1st stage music.

  • wow, now that was an exciting ending

  • Eu não sabia da existência dessa versão arcade, ou seja, não sabia que era a original. Mas isso era de se esperar, afinal, várias versões de jogos arcade foram feitas para NES. Muito boa!

  • Game's a lot shorter than I thought when I was a kid..

  • I can't really tell because of the video quality, but the gun looks very familiar. Looks like an M-41A Pulse Rifle to me, but I can't be sure because of the quality. Nice little detail if it is. :)

  • much diffrent nes vers looks not so good..

  • awsome play dude! you know some1 should rm this game in 5th gen graphics, would be so kickass

  • they sorta did with contra 4 for the DS. not the top of the line graphics but... still

  • wasn't the laser the Worst weapon of all on the Nes version?

  • I had no idea Contra could look so good.

  • lol the levels are so short........ what emulator can this be played on where can I find the rom?

  • arrrrrrrrrrrrr just reloaded the page to see if my comment appeared and again....that soundtrack is horrible.....who is with me to say theat the baddest sound tracks were the original like double dragon...contra...any of em...mega man...commando.....someone blind me now....

  • You don't like the sound so you want us to blind you?

    brilliant

  • remake of the original contra?....lol......actualy this is the ORIGINAL contra, the nes version was just a port of this version

  • lol this was the arcade game it was ported to NES this is the real version but I do agree the NES was wayyyyyyyyyyyy better

  • So.....much....fail....ugh.

You call yourself a retro gamer and don't even recognize the original arcade version of Contra?

Turn in your gamer badge, sir.

  • you idiot. this WAS the original contra for the arcade. the nes one came out later.

  • i hate how little 14 year olds talk like they even know what game this is.

  • I'm 16 and I've known Contra all my life. I know I wan't around in the 80's but I've been playing Contra sinc I was 4 or 5. That and Sonic the Hedgehog.

  • The NES version is much better.

And what the hell with an animation in arcade contra? Especially the jumps....so lame.

  • ur wrong.......the nes version is MUCH,MUCH,MUCH,MUCH better than this horrible piece of shit, i bough this for 360 arcane and sucks monkey tits

  • Yeah, the first contra game. ^^

  • this came from someone with anime names on his account name................lol

  • How is it a piece of shit game? Oh, wait, I know, you're a graphics whore Halo fag, right?

  • it looks so much better than on nes :(

  • Great run.

  • wow, didnt even kno theres an arcade version. interesting how they would just combine the last 4 stages of the original into one mega-stage

  • The NES did a great job porting the arcade.

  • Haha, what is with the credits?

  • is it just me or was the nes version better....the colors are ulgy and the music made me wanna beat somebody up

  • The NES version is definitely better. The character models here move really awkwardly, the levels are shorter, and whatever system they used for the music sounds terrible.

It was definitely cool to see a different version of my favorite game though. :)

  • Don't be a fanboy. Both are good.

  • Great game, one of my fav. contra games. Just wish it had a proper ending like the nes game.

  • he uses the laser weapon...it's the strongest in the game BUT the spread is the most fun!

  • Man do I ever HATE the jumping animation for the arcade version!

  • ok dude the 3d and nextgen games are still very fun to play

  • Oh to let you guys in on 1987 Contra (Arcade). The guys at Konami wanted a short and sweet game with firearms and enough to beat SNK's Ikari Warriors and Capcom's Commando games. So they made this to top expert level designs and use a engine that would work for only 4 stages. Fuck Double Dragon 1 and 2 on the arcade were short, something to think about.

  • xxpandamidknightxx,

'Ikari Warriors' and 'Commando' are Vertical Side-Scroll Shooter like that of 'Front Line'. They have no relation to 'Contra' at all!

'Contra' comes from a long line of lineage or family of Horizontal Side-Scroll Platformer such as 'The Legend of Kage', 'Rush'n Attack', and 'Kung-Fu Master'!!

    Go play your GAY 'LittleBigPlanet'!!

  • Just out of curiosity, what does "pwn" mean?

  • Meaning I could easily beat him or rape him in a Street Fighter 4 match. Oh, pwn is also meaning that the person owns your life. Like right now, I own your soul.

  • Nah, you don't own anything. Sorry kid, but I don't play those juvenile games. I just asked a simple question. I wouldn't brag to much about being good at a video game at 28 years old. Don't you have more important things to do than to talk shit on youtube about being better than someone at a silly video game?

  • Apparently not. ^_^

  • Obviously, the nes version had less than a megabyte of memory to be played in a 8 bit system, the arcade game was much stronger for being a big machine, that should not be disrespectful, all arcade games where much stronger than their home versions, I dont know why someone gave you a bad mark for that, what you said is true. Thats the same fact for Super C, Pit Fighters or any Double Dragon, just to name a few... Have a nice day!

  • The Arcade version is better in every way: Sound, graphic, and detail. The Nes version is very diluted.

  • True but the nes was longer which I liked. If they could of comboed the two in a way then it would of been complete bad ass. But each contra Be it arcade or Console all are great games.
