this is fastest version i heared..this and the slowest version by lubimow i like most.. the themes in 1:35 to 2:50 working better in faster tempo..imo
@tonychet2s You would ask someone who is making love or that is in a mystical ecstasy: " why does he make that funny face expression? " There are other worlds where Beauty rules ...
does anyone know what the other version of this song is? it might be a duet, there is a whole other melodic line but its the same song. anyone know what im talking about?
@slickbtk Michael Nyman arranged this piece for the movie Gattaca, calling it "Impromptu for 12 Fingers." It's not playable (by a single pianist) even with 12 fingers though, since the extra notes are in a completely different range of the keyboard.
there is only one person who really understand schuberts works and this is Alfred Brendel. His Schubert interpretations are unique. Anyway Perahia is a great pianist and this is also a great performance.
I like it from a melodic standpoint, and especially at 2:53 where it switches from Gb maj to Eb maj, then back to Gb major at 3:20. Some commenters didn't like the faces he makes, but hey, if it moves you so what?
I also like Brendel's rendition, but what kind of amazed me was this young asian kid's whipping it out with virtually no mistakes, and with great phrasing as well. I would place it on the same level as Perahia and Brendel.
This is the furthest thing from a fashion show you could get, yet still you people choose to comment on this? He is a brilliant pianist! Not many in his class!!
But at that age he is still not so ugly. After 40 years old he becamne extremely ugly, like a pieceof "Dracula's Driver.
And so funny : His closest friend is a great pinist called Radu Lupu , who ....LOL...........is uglier than him . lol...... Radu Lupu is a real extremely good pianist.
In his CD that feature Schubert's 8 Impromptus, the tempo of this piece is much slower. I base mine on his standard. Faster isn't necessarily beautiful, is it? My hat off to Murray Perahia.
So many difficulties for a pianist to contend with in this sublime Impromptu - and Perahia has found just the right touch to deliver a sensitive, thoughtful and passionate performance - very rare for this work. I also recommend the Zimmerman, Brendel and Pires performances (currently on Youtube). The Badura-Skoda performance (also on Youtube) is, in my opinion, a complete disaster - listen to it for comparison.
Although I agree that it's a beautiful performance, I hear too much of the middle voices in the right hand in his playing - those middle voices are supposed to sound more in the background. They're a bit too prominent, too busy- sounding. In an ideal performance of this piece, the listener shouldn't be made aware of those fast moving middle voices, as we hear the lovely main melody soar above them.
Oh my God! What a treasure this is! Thank you so much Nodame 2006 for posting this! What a no frills performance! I have a chance to meet Mr.Perahia next year in San Francisco.
I didn't know Professor Snape played piano.

@tallc23 "So yesterday, that is, Tuesday evening at 7, in the
Imperial-and-Royal Opera House I made my entry into the world! . . . My
friends and colleagues spread themselves through the hall to listen to
opinions and criticisms. Tselinski can tell you how little
fault-finding there was; only Hube overheard more. Some lady said: 'Too
bad the young man is so poorly dressed.' If that is all the fault
anybody found . . . then I have no need to worry!" F. Chopin
