This is a 100% performance by Nicholson. Look at this scene. After the orderly tries to discourage him from talking to the Chief, he retorts, and when he looks back at Chief he gives an incredulous shake of the head as if to blow him off. Like one of the guys who is supposed to be in charge of the "crazies" is crazy himself because he just expects so little of them. What a performance.
