Excellent question! Railroads use "hump yards" to sort cars by gravity. The cars are pushed to the top of a hill (the hump) and uncoupled to roll down into a huge yard that has the switches set to direct the car into the proper track.
Some cars are kept from being humped because they are too fragile to withstand the force of coupling hard which may happen when gravity sends them down into a waiting train. Nothing dirty here!
That is an MTH #20-98205 UP Jordan Spreader. It was first offered in 1998. It's a cool unit and has wings that fold out to clear the right-of-way if you have room.
