flea is initially very impressive, and he has undeniably mastered a style that he developed. however there are two kinds of slapping. flea alternates slap and pop quickly to get a syncopated percussive sound like larry graham. thats about all he does though, with slapping. other bassists have refined the technique to play melodies on top and lines on the bottom, marcus miller and victor wooten for example. that style is arguably higher, but these are all bassists of the higher caliber

Flea has been rated in the top 5 bassists in the history of rock. Personally I agree with that ranking. His talent cannot be dismissed as average by a long shot. The best bassists in rock that I've heard are Geddy Lee, Jack Bruce, John Paul Jones, Sting, and Flea.
