Great duo...great song....nothing more annoying than cutting the video off halfway through the performance...why bother. Poor taste. And a dis-service to the music and the artists and the viewer/listeners. Learn how to put up a video.
@tomasvasconcelos1994 It is. I love many genres, including death metal. But 'Beyond the Missouri Sky' has been one of my all-time favorite albums since it came out. It's simply transcendental.
@themariannelm I choose to ignore soulless folks that don't get Metheny. Let's update Woody Allen's reference to Cole Porter in Hannah and Her Sisters: "[Pat Metheny] is too good for you."
Santana, King of Spanish love songs? I disagree, for there are so many, many others. For one, search YT for Joan Manuel Serrat. I suggest his La Mujer Que Yo Quiero.
Haden is a genius. He can play with anyone and find the perfect role for himself and the music. He enhances everthing he touches.I don't think there is another musician in the world who comes close to Haden's compatibility while maintaining his own individuality.
Metheny simply does not have the rh technique to make a nylon sound good.
It's so flat and without any of the subtlety.
His electric is warm and sensuous but this is just hard to listen to after hearing so many great Masters of nylon with finger picking technique with nails, varying the dynamics. There's also nothing "Spanish" about the music here.
@Rexicano ...you have no idea what the hell you are talking about, it only says Spanish in the title. Of course he is not Spanish but people have different renditions. Like you said, there are many other guitarists that can speak better on a nylon, but he is an exceptional artist and I don't think you can come close to a nylon, steel or electric like Pat could.
@Rexicano ...haha sure buddy, sounds like you're attacking this subject because Pat has his own original way of playing a nylon...even if it's w/ a pick
@Rexicano ...you know you're right I'm too young, that's why I'm arguing on youtube I didn't realize that cause I'm 23 sorry, any way Pat Metheny rules dude
@Rexicano it's tue that at the beginning his rh technique doesnt sound spectacular but when he starts to play with the pick, he is very nuanced and the touch is beatiful. also, you say that there is nothing spanish about the song, but the song is based on a phrygian scale which is the primary scale used in flamenco. you should think before writing something so narrow-minded.
A Phrygian scale does not make it Spanish...it's how you use it.
De Falla, Rodrigo, Granados...Paco & Segovia, this is Spanish music...and there's no flavor of Flamenco here. He's the Kenny G of acoustic guitar.
What you call nuance, I call dull, clunky & heavy handed. His vibrato is not well developed and his sound is one dimensional despite the most expensive equipment. He's so limited in not having any fingerpicking technique, like any good Spanish player has.
@Rexicano i am not the one that goes around trashing people like metheny. you are such an expert in tone, so the burden of proof is on you. reality is, you're just another one of those frustrated kids that vomit their hate hidden behind a keyboard.
@Rexicano everyone is ignorant of something. PM is not a "classical guitarist" and does not pretend to be. You, my friend, in your lack of appreciation for one of the greatest jazz musicians in his generation, are ignorant of the musical depth that PM brings to every performance. He, as you say, is an electric guitarist If he were giving a classical guitar concert your criticism of his tone and technique may be justified, but he's not. I think he deserves a little more respect than you give him.
You go ahead and give him all the accolades you want; but for me his playing is crap. And if Metheny can dish out the harshest critique I've ever heard to Kenny G...then I can give him hell for his third rate playing. It takes years to master Nylon playing but why bother when the masses don't care? It has nothing to do with Classical style music. There are PLENTY of great Jazz players who spent the time to get a great tone with nylon guitar. Metheny aint one.
@Rexicano I'm sorry if you like Kenny G so much. I won't waste my time trying to enlighten someone so musically closed-minded. PM doesn't need defenders. He's played with all of my musical heroes and has the respect of the most discerning musical minds on the planet: Keith Jarrett, Charley Hayden, Michael Brecker, Jim Hall, Steve Reich, Brad Mehldau, the list is endless. But you should just go comment on some classical post. You have no credibility in the jazz world.
Like you're some sort of God from the "Jazz" world handing out decrees...right;
I was playing jazz before you were born.
Maybe stick to playing with little girls because you are not going to "enlighten" anyone.
Just what is it that you think a plectrum player can do that is not possible with fingers? Flamenco players can do anything. But a pick player is so limited in comparison, Mr. Clueless.
I agree with you regarding what you wrote about PM regarding his performance in this song.
However please consider that it is not a requirement to play the spanish guitar in a way what is considered "right" by scholars (whatever that is). Probably he was looking for a nylon string sound and wanted to play a lite song and nothing more, nothing deeper. I hope we musicians don't have to be world champions at every time when we touch an instrument to catch a mood, right? :)
Pat thinks it's OK to come down so hard on someone like Kenny G, who I don't care for myself, when HE is playing this third rate Nylon... thus I feel like a little payback to Metheny. He's using machines now in in act instead of musicians. That's Jazz? He's a hypocrite and a poser. He should either work on the acoustic nylon chops or stop selling this lightweight crap and stop pretending he's any better than Kenny G.
PM usually plays jazz with much more fantasy, adds more freedom and flavor into the music than KG so PM's style has a more artistic approach. KG is a "power chord" player of the sax. But at the same time KG is also a brilliant business man! What is all right with me if I don't have to listen to his "fast food" product.
-
I was curious what PM said about KG I googled "Pat Metheny on Kenny G". I have to admit that I mostly agree with PM.
You mean you think that Kenny G is the the WORST music ever heard?
Oh please, Kenny G plays his instrument with a lot better facility than PM plays an acoustic nylon guitar.
But I don't listen to Kenny, I don't care about commercial music much; the point is that PM sets himself up as some high Lord of Jazz while he himself has serious flaws. I think he's a nut so say such nasty stuff about Kenny G like he's Hitler or something. It's uncalled for—PM needs to clean his own house.
Not the worst music but the worst jazz, unbearable for me. KG has a harmful musical carrier IMHO. The message what KG forwards to people through his popularity is that modern jazz is (though probably the last artistic genre) only some kind of shitty elevator music.
I understand if a jazz musician feels passionate as KG undermines the basic building blocks of jazz. Read the Google article (first hit, see keywords below).
PM sucks in this song but that doesn't mean that he is wrong.
What a curious comparison, KG, and PM. One guy had posted earlier, - I think Pheromone or so.. - just said that you're probably deaf. I guess; you do not have anything to do with jazz or with a little bit advanced music when you write such nonsense.
Apart from Pat's improvisational genius, his finesse, imagination and the sophisticated phrase.. but even the same sound is unique, and perfect in its class. (even on nylon)
And if you compare his play to the other instrumentalists, both classical or Flamenco - which is of course a complete misunderstanding - you have to realize that there are repetition of manners and techniques (not offensive to anyone, of course)
In that way Pat's technique is unique, not worse or better - just unique.
@Rexicano And If we are talking about your crypto Idol;
Kenny G. sucks & fucks like hearts out. His "play" is grotesque empty. He plays like an average student from primary school without any harmony tensions (mainly hackneyed prymitive pentatonic patterns), without groove/drive or "swing". He is out of tune, "time" and intonation but with idiotic pathos with huge filtered reverb. Reverb, which obscures his deficiencies and low skills.
Metheny's a great musician, but his tone here is awful. Partly it's because nylon electro-acoustic guitars don't sound that good, but he's clicking and buzzing and thin-sounding. Shame.

You're the one who has no idea;
Any guitarist with Classical training, finger picking style can play all sorts of things a plectrum can NEVER do.
And we play in a much more subtle way with all sorts of nuance that an electric player like Metheny can never get close to.
But hey, thanks for letting me know you have no clue.
If you think this is good nylon sound...you're wrong.
Now go bother someone else.
