The 2 lead SD40's sound amazing as USUAL! I think the 3rd unit is under power as well but the rest are off line. Nothing beats the sound of 2nd generation E645 prime movers... The new stuff I don't even listen too, because I can't hear them anyway
@TheRobCicero youre right all i can hear from my house are the GE AC4400s the CP has and the SD40's of the CP and the Reading and northern and also sd50's 60's and rarely 70's
And even MORE importantly, don't forget that they're still there. Too many people are forgetting that CR is still "here", just not in the world's most desirable form thats all.
On another note, these are ALL Conrail trains running this hill today. Sure, they've got NS power on em are run by that same railroad, but they're still Big Blue trains in spirit. NS has most certainly NOT transformed this into a conservative line like all of their "true" pre-merger routes that they operate.
@AliceInChains243 That is utter BS, you retard. NS's pre-merger lines are not "conservative". You've obviously never spent much time on the ex N&W mainline west of Roanoke. The action is a lot like the ex PRR shown here....and will only get even busier thanks to the Heartland Corridor project. Clearly, nitwits like you speak passionately about the RR's you like, but don't know jack about actual operations.
@meccaturbo chill man, both lines are equally as enjoyable, it depends on your PREFRENCE, ARE YOU PRR OR N&W, I personally am an N&W fan but enjoyed my time up on this line, now back off
@NS9710 Like I said, NS's pre-merger lines are not "conservative" - that is the dumbest statement I've ever heard. Go down on the N&W and watch, and you'll see.
@meccaturbo Don't need to tell me about the N&W, I lived on ex N&W between Crewe and Norfolk, occassionally went to Roanoke and loved going out on the mountian, preferably to Montgomery Tunnel or Christiansburg, I did go to Walton once, chased a train back, then went out on the Pocahontas too, but come on man, no need to fight and be an ass about things, everybody is entitled to their opinion. If he wants to say that is his right, let the kid have his say.
@NS9710 Not trying to be an ass, but when you say untrue things, they need to be pointed out. The rest of NS (other than the ex PRR) is not "conservative". That was not an accurate statement, so I pointed it out to you.
@meccaturbo you have to remember, this kid lives in CT, its another 6-8 hrs probably for him to go to the N&W which him working @ McDonald's probably won't allow him, and he's influenced and partial to the Conrail way of doing things, this is personal prefrence, leave the kid be, come on man.
@NS9710 Not true. You said the other NS lines besides the ex PRR were "conservative", and this is not true. I responded to your comment. So no, I did not start it.
Hahaha yea man well, guess two RR legends got...BLACKENED in this day in age. At least NS is putting on a great show out here, despite the economic slowdown, there's STILL a shitload of trains out there on that mountain.
hahaha not sure what issue you read, but if its a recent one then Tom Nemeth and his Railpace is WRONG!!! The 10N is BACK IN BUSINESS!!! I've seen it myself, twice when I was out there last, and once going over Rockvllle Bridge when I was in the Harrisburg area railfanning with friends 2 weeks ago. The 16E USED to be the 10N, its the train that replaced it periodically, but now that job moved back to where it originally was, Elkhart to Conway I believe, and the 10N is back and good as ever.
Yea, it sucks sometimes that NS only lets the first 3 headend units online. But then again, if all of 10N's 6 units were running, there wouldn't have been any need for helpers.
Sah-weeet! SD40-2 heaven, I hope I can get back there soon. Personally, I like Sand Patch better than the slopes, but I like NS better than CSX, so I always have to visit both when I go out, LOL!
haha, how come everybody that I know who loves the PITL hate CSX?!! Maybe its just cuz thats I was "born and raised" on the CSX Boston Line in NY/MASS, but I've always had a soft spot for the yellow nose, haha I'm ADDICTED to the River Line at the moment! Just out of curiosity, what is it about Sand Patch that you like better than the West Slope? haha, its gotta be something good, cuz those SD40-2's are REAL hard to beat.
I find the scenery to be better, not to mention multiple oppurtunities for all-day light because the line has multiple curves. The power CSX uses is normally Spartan GE's and EMD's... opposed to the constant Catfish raid on NS. The grades are pretty darn steep, I think steeper than NS. CSX's helpers are nice, SD40-2's and SD50-2's. There is also a train from CN which uses the line, with CN power. Foreign power can lead because cab signals are not required. Plus the color beats black, lol.
Sounded like the last two of the front engines weren't running.

NS, truly the best run railroad of the big class 1's...at least that;'s what almost all industry observers say. They do a great job.

The SD-40's are helpers...more than likely the 10N crew outlawed (ran out of time) and they tacked the helpers to the head end, to get it to Altoona.

Totally awesome work on your video!
I feel I am actually there watching it.
Love when the engines drown out any sounds, my favorite part of watching trains!
Excellent video!
