  • uhm... WHAT?

  • just one question, at my school we have like a proxy server thing not allowing us to get on youtube... if i was to do this and put it on a memory stick would i be able to get on youtube without the proxy thing coming up or go on a website with flash games on! I wanna know first because i don't wanna get banned from the school computers! Someone might wanna try it first. :D

  • It won't work, at all. Prism is just a browser without frames.

  • just 2 words for you: WEB APPS.

Really; can't you see the usage with Google Apps, Flicker, Facebook, Zoho, Mindmeister, Corporate web applications, etc etc etc??? Not even close to Active Desktop, please...

This is a great achievement, pretty much copied by Google Chrome. I hope they get success with this; I already use it and it's fantastic.

  • checkout the Wiki for "what's the point" questions... roadmap/wishlist include extensions

  • Let's say I'd want POW to be started when the webapp is called, and POW to be stopped when the webapp is closed, would that be possible with Prism?

Is it possible to configure this kind of stuff?

Or should one stay with the underlying xulrunner for this level of tweaking?

  • Something different...

  • Mozilla Prism > October 2007

    Google chrome > September 2008

  • Mozilla Prism > October 2007

    Fluidapp Fluid > December 2007

    Google chrome > September 2008

The Fluid Dev says he's been inspired by Prism and Adobe Air.

  • This way you can have things open, movies/music ect, and still keep them open even if your browser crashes or you have to restart it.

  • Greasemonkey styles and scripts need to continue working with Prism.. but they don't. :(

  • Its an interesting idea, but honestly, what's the point? You might as well just bookmark a page and go to it within your browser.

  • I agree, there is no point to this whatsoever. Why not just go to the website?

  • The idea is that you can open a web page you want without really having to open up the whole browser, which can sometimes be time consuming. For instance, as you can see in the video, you can quickly check what's new in YouTube when your browser is not currently running.

  • It's pretty much like Windows Active Desktop, which allowed you to have a website open all the time as part of your desktop background. Pretty much useless for most people.

  • Looks like somebody is STILL "web surfing" like its 1999...

    Ever heard of Web2.0 apps?

  • Yes I have. Just because they "rebranded" an idea doesn't mean it's any better. For the most part "Web 2.0" is a joke.

  • It may not be new technology(as they 'sell it'; i agree with you on that), but the new way of using that old js tricks has been quite groundbreaking. I feel it is like when people started to use plain-old ice blocks, to make popsicles(which IS plain-old ice after all).

I believe that web2.0, Prism, etc. are great ideas; and it's even cooler that those great ideas can be created with 'old' technology.

PS: Hey, that was a good analogy.

  • It's not for you. It's not for me. But if you don't understand the point of this then you are daft.

  • @EBKemanon I don't get the point. Strip the toolbars from firefox, put a url shortcut on the desktop=prism. Revolutionary!

  • @EBKemanon Actually, this could be for me. I have huge browser sessions so a simple shortcut doesn't do it when i quickly want to check my webmail. I guess making a new browser profile wouldn't make it app-y enough.

  • lets say you just wanna go check something at a website you go in most often.. just one click gets you there rather than opening a browser and clicking to find your bookmark, Its great with cloud computing

  • I'm just not getting it. Why can't this be accomplished with gadgets (vista/7), or for the YouTube example, just dragging the shortcut to the desktop?

  • @mlbslugger62 Prism doesn't share cookies with your day2day-browser. So you can bee logged in into YouTube but not into Google on your normal browser, or Facebook so it doesn't see which websites you surf on (via their "Like" button) and so on. And if you close Firefox you don't close your Facebook/Google+ session accidentally.
